Introduction: Motorized Help
“Do you require assistance, fleshling?” The man frowned and, striking a rather animalistic pose, ran in a particularly unusual but effective way. The motorized golem switched his gears and caught up to him. “I can take your fleshy structure to where you desire or offer protective measures to keep the structural integrity of your delicate flesh frame.” The man redoubled efforts and sped up ahead. He wasn’t in a panic but his manner made it obvious that he didn’t appreciate the artificial presence by his side. The golem stopped and saw him dip into the horizon. It was just another person that didn’t want his help.
He had tried hard to return to active service after the incident. His new motorized body was rather loud and a bit cranky but he could still provide help. He simply didn’t understand, he still worked so, why didn’t they want him to? Nowadays it seemed like people only cared about electronics and genetics. Good, old, dependable steam or, in his current state, combustion power just wasn’t appreciated. Had he any feelings, that’s what he would’ve though and that would’ve gotten him depressed but his system analysed the situation in a much simpler way: try again. He would try again until he succeeded or stopped working, what else was there to do?
The day hadn’t changed despite how many people he asked. By night he realised it was time to return to base and replenish his fuel; there was still enough but the schedule was clear. He took the main road as always and saw that the museum had spotlights outside and around a yellowish statue. It seemed like some sort of insect and the inscription below indicated a desert. There was a block of ice with some sort of prehistoric creature in a refrigerated container next to it. A huge poster announced the museum’s latest acquisitions as treasures from times gone by.
The lights moved from side to side and the golem noticed that they were warming each item in turn. He found it strange but it must’ve been part of the show. Something would eventually happen and so he decided to stay to watch. After an hour the insect creature started to rustle. Half an hour later it slowly moved. After two full hours it had broken free from the dried up sand covering it and had lashed at the lights and block of ice. The weakened ice had freed the dinosaur which had found the light both invigorating and scary and so was attacking as well. Human didn’t seem entertained by the spectacle the golem noticed. Then he saw the blood and as his eyes focused on the crowd he saw younglings screaming in panic. “Humans in danger. Overdrive: on.”
His engine roared and propelled him forward with screeching wheels. His arm extended and blocked the insect claws from reaching a mother whose body shielded her children. The hand also grabbed the creature and brought it to him. An uppercut sent it into the air and when it landed he crushed the exoskeleton with both open hands against the pavement. The flying dinosaur noticed the attack and descended on him. Unable to dodge he covered his head with his arms. The prehistoric animal lashed and cut out the exhaust pipes from his left side. He waited for the return. The creature attacked again and the rest of his pipes flew away but it was now giving his back to him. He shot his arm and grabbed a wing. He pulled and grabbed the other. He released his store of static energy and the arcs of electricity fried the dinosaur. The crowd cheered and surrounded their saviour. “Do you require further assistance, fleshlings?”
