Introduction: An Uneven Trip
Sand blew with such strength that each grain was like a projectile crashing on the caravan, tearing cloth and leaving marks on the wood. Whatever was made free of the precarious hold that the old ropes provided was carried away by the wind. There were already mentions of divine retribution for deeds done and left undone but the most practical knew that words hardly helped; if they were right, they were doomed.
After a few hours the wind ceased and sand became lethargic. A few mounds moved and gave way to human figures that emerged from the sea of sand, only a few. Their possessions were buried so aside from what they were carrying and what they could pull out everything was lost. They walked, forward, they knew their destination but they didn’t know if they’ll make it there. They had a slim chance before, now they didn’t know.
It was soon when thirst started to sting their throats. They swallowed in reflex as if imaginary water could alleviate their plight. Then they saw the city, but it couldn’t be. They were leagues away so it was not possible. A mirage? That was the logical conclusion and yet it looked so real, how not to believe. They arrived and met friendly faces. They received fresh water, ate, rested and told their story. They had arrived but, how? The party in charge of retrieving what was left of the caravan would find out. Maybe, they wouldn’t like what they would find.
