Introduction: A Black Heart
“What’s that?” “This? Don’t know. Looks like a rock of some type.” “Yeah, but look. It glows, it’s strange, it seems to…” The glow intensified and the kids covered they eyes. It wasn’t enough, the glow, dark yet bright, continued to extend and it seemed to flare. They stood up and ran, the glow wasn’t as fast as they were and it didn’t want to be. It slowly diminished and the crystal, with its peculiar reflections on its shiny surface, remained on the grass. They weren’t whom it was waiting for.
A few days later it was the turn of a petty criminal. Down on his luck he couldn’t believe it when he saw the crystal. He picked it up with a toothy smile and snivelled: “What a wonder! This is what I needed. I’ll buy great, big weapons and they will fear me.” The crystal wasn’t impressed by what it saw in his heart. It repeated the process but he didn’t let go. “No, you are going nowhere. I need you for my revenge.” When his palms heated up and hurt that’s when he finally let go and ran away. He wasn’t the one either.
The crystal had seen many sorts of people and animals pass by. It preferred the latter, they didn’t bother. It had never seen an artificial human however. The automaton looked at the crystal and stared at it, evaluating its use. After a while it picked it up and looked at it from every angle. The crystal had never experienced the emptiness it had when it tried to look into the automaton’s heart. It hesitated, could this one be a good choice? Just as it was debating its merits the automaton let the crystal fall on the grass and walked away. It wasn’t what it was looking for.
