Introduction: The Confidence of Ignorance
“Another day on the beat, another drag. Why doesn’t something exciting ever happen?” Given some strange occurrences and worrying reports members of the Special Forces were asked to patrol this forgotten town. With their training these units had no problem doing so on their own. Being used to extreme situations and missions where putting life at risk was the least valuable of things at stake it meant that the streets of this quiet interior town were of little interest. Of course, they have all heard the legends, which haven’t been part of the mission briefing, so to call it, but they didn’t give much weight to them.
Perhaps that wasn’t the wisest of decisions. Legends may have seemed for sophisticated capital people but for those that breathed the eerie night air of this countryside they were warnings. After all, when a legend starts with “Fool the one that doesn’t heed my call for care…” then one could very well consider exercising some caution. The man calmly walked the streets as if it were a garden of delights though his mind had the faint perception of hostile territory. “What could this country people really fear? A big bad wolf? That’s what bullets are for and I have plenty. All curled up inside their barred huts. The new century hasn’t caught up with them yet…”
For being a cool summer night the air progressively got particularly chilly as he approached the lake a few paces outside town. “Funny thing, the surface seems frozen.” The chill turned to raw cold to the point he could see his own breath before himself. The Moon, hanging from the sky casually turned crimson and the ice shattered to reveal a lunging creature with more teeth than good intentions. His pistol emptied on the creature it fled to the grove nearby. He looked at the waters rippled with falling ice shards: it looked like blood and a chain seemed to be floating in the middle. His own blood was on the grass as well and his hand instinctively reached for the deep cut on his arm.
“This isn’t what I’m trained for.” he muttered while walking back to town. Then he realised that the grass was frosted and the roofs covered in a thin layer of ice. Chimney’s coughed smoke in a town that seemed to have adapted pretty well to this incipient winter. He made his way to the base tent in the main square with an eye on the trees; all of the trees. There was something out there and his pistol was reloaded and ready to empty more lead into whatever came out from behind them. Nothing came, except lower temperatures that asked for a recall of all units to fit them with appropriate gear. The next day, the Sun shone like any other summer day. His arm didn’t look as fresh, though. Festering with a foul infection it called for aggressive medicine and an immediate return to the capital for further treatment. He surely felt lucky as the truck left the town behind and heard the rattle of chains as it passed the lake.
