Introduction: Verdant Allure
“What’s another forest in the world?” “Maybe you aren’t impressed but when you look at it, you may think otherwise. Go and report back.” With his immaculate suit and blades ready for action he was on his way. It was a simple mission in principle but there was an obvious implication that things would require some extra attention; he was ready, of course, he always was. He checked three times his equipment before leaving and once more on the transport. Once the engine started, it was all set; ready or not. His face would’ve revealed some doubts had it not been covered by his eternal mask.
The empty aridity of the devastated land around the lush leaves and verdant vegetation gave the view a mirage quality. The contrast of desolation against such opulence of life was difficult to accept. It made the illusion of a lie all the more powerful to remember the many forests he had already visited: burnt, dry accumulations of grey lumber and ash. He looked back at the driver: “No, I haven’t seen anything like this either. Guess you got lucky this time.” “Yes, maybe. We’ll see what dark secrets lay behind this luxurious life.”
He checked his equipment before venturing forward. Only a few steps into the forest, he felt a strange change in the air. As if the forest was holding his breath. He instinctively moved his hand to ready his blades, confident in the fact that they would be ready for him. In the distance, he noticed a green blur move from one side of his view to the other. He extended his arms and found them, unrecognisably light. Taking cover behind a tree he found out that he had only his suit left: blades, shurikens and armour, anything metallic actually, had rusted to dust.
“So much for extra precautions.” he couldn’t resist some sarcasm. Fine, he wasn’t defenceless, his training still gave him some modicum of security, but things have taken a rather abrupt turn. He looked around with wide open eyes: no sign of the green blur. With body as low as he could manage while maintaining a steady walking pace he moved through delightfully fresh plants to a thin stream that crossed his path. He hadn’t noticed any water source coming in or out of the forest so a self-contained river was another strange feature to consider.
After looking around carefully he finally submitted to the temptation: he lowered his mask and drank from the crystalline water. “It’s sweet!” Almost, the delicate flavour of the water overshadowed the bitter taste of the purified mud available elsewhere. “Incredible.” escaped his lips after another long sip. He remained sitting in front of the stream, hypnotised by its sinuous dance. He didn’t notice the blur behind him or the blade close to his neck. He didn’t realize anything until a breeze broke the spell and he looked around. He was just alone. That was good enough, he thought, he liked the place well enough. He drank some more and, without even considering about covering his face, walked into the emerald depths of the forest with no weight hanging on his mind.
