Introduction: Within the Crypt
The smell is musty and incisive. The stone slab is moved a bit more with effort. Exhausted workers take an unsolicited moment to breathe the dry, hot air that stings their lungs. The entrance is wide enough for a person to enter so they can fall to the ground and actually rest. The explorers enter with torches and other paraphernalia only they comprehend. They activate devices in several places, take measurements at every step and analyse everything they see. The ceremony is repeated in every room until they reach the antechamber. Through the sea of gloom their timid lights turn pale before the intense sunlight: they’ve reached the main crypt.
It’s an unusual one, open to the exterior yet unreachable except from the main entrance; unless one has wings. Their methodical approach is put to the test before the elegance of the architecture. A sort of spiral staircase runs round the walls to the top with shadows falling like tears on the stone. “Why would they have a means to reach the roof if there’s nothing to reach the ground on the outside?” “Perhaps there used to be something and time erased it.” They approach the main sarcophagus with irresistible excitement. It looks untouched since it was closed eons ago. They’ll be the first to see its inhabitant since the world sealed him away. They’d finally know how much of the legend is true and what really happened to the one who once was called the Plague of the Desert.
This time is the explorer’s physical strength that is put to the test. In spite of the slab being much smaller than the one in the main entrance it takes them longer to move it. They dare not risk the entrancing carvings on its top so with great care they manage to set it to a side. Inside, lays the mummified remains of one whose mere presence caused terror. According to the hieroglyphics carved in the tomb he commanded over life and death and his eternal reign knows no end. The explorers take account of everything they see and, with their prize before them, manage to return to their analytical frame of mind. They are completely submerged into the world of myth told by the engravings with a delight that is almost childlike.
Perhaps that’s why they don’t hear the rustle inside the tomb. The sound of the linen cloths rubbing against each other, the tinkling of the amulets as the body straightens or the looming figure that emerges from a sleep of centuries. The entity, supernatural and majestic, gets out of the sarcophagus and waits for his subjects to acknowledge him. No such thing occurs, their minds can’t conceive of anything more impressive than the story they find in the surfaces around. The Pharaoh doesn’t forgive such impertinence. “To our end.” The golden insects tear flesh away and glowing sands absorb life into the decrepit body of the monarch. Hollowed in and out, the remains of the explorers fold onto the ground gently. The Pharaoh looks a bit healthier but he requires more life to be alive. He senses more subjects around. They will serve him well one way or the other. They are the start of his new reign.
