Introduction: Runes and Masks
All participants must have an Ionian-styled mask, no exceptions. Even a Spider Queen couldn’t simply get in without one so in search of an Ionian mask she went. The forest was rumoured to harbour ruins of temples and other ancient places of worship so it seemed a good place to start her search. She walked a good while before encountering some rocks that could’ve belonged to a structure of yore but there was too little left to amount to more than a few rustic seats. As such she used one of those and pondered about which direction she should choose. Any seemed as good as the rest so she simply walked forward. Luck seemed to be on her side, or the forest simply stood up to its reputation, because in a clear she found a gate.
There wasn’t much in the way of walls, let alone a roof, but a floor was barely surviving the vegetation. Her steps sounded hard against the stone. As quietly as she could she searched for a place that could contain relics or ceremonial artefacts. Towards the opposite side of the former room a plant grew between some rocks. It drew her attention because of some gems with a soft blue hue engraved in it. She tiptoed towards it and inspected the rocks, the gems surely were pretty and there was a really big one behind the plant. Perhaps if she could pick them out she could buy herself a mask; it wasn’t ideal but it should work. She tried using a twig and something felt wrong. She had only scratched the rock and it started to shake. With a leap a scorpion made out of tendrils and rocks came to life.
She jumped backwards and tripped on the stone tiles. Falling on the ground she saw the creature approach as her eyes widened. The pincers were larger than her arms and they were ready to start with her legs. Then, it suddenly stopped and returned to its place. She stood up and saw the creature to make sure it had retired then turned to leave. That’s when she faced an Ursine Shaman frowning at her. In spite of being ruins, it was a current place of worship and it wasn’t wise to bother its guardian. She excused herself and explained her situation. The Shaman let her go with just a reprimand and a piece of advice: they have very good prices at the shamanic shop in town. She should check it out, he’s there every day.
