Introduction: Fate in the Cards
“Go ahead, gentlemen. I already have a place reserved for both of you.” The demon whispered in the ears of the mad aristocrat and he slashed at the undertaker. He stumbled backwards and fell. He raised his spade to shield himself from the attack and at the first opportunity slapped the head of the aristocrat in full. He staggered a few steps then fell sitting on the ground. His mind was clear for a moment: “What I am doing? Why I am dressed like this? I don’t need these weapons…” But the demon wasn’t sleeping and he joined him by his side. Kneeling, he reminded: “Remember the deck. You haven’t drawn the right card yet.”
In a blur, the memories of his murderous rampages flooded his mind and loosened again his grip on reality. The demon offered the deck and the aristocrat drew a card: “The Fool, you are excused. Let’s go.” The man sprung from the ground and fled in long, uneven, diagonal leaps with the calm eyes of the undertaker following him. He got back on his feet and gave the alarm. Then, patiently, started the preparations for two fresh bodies to arrive. The cavalry was on the streets. The bear looked at his mount, practically rising an eyebrow and she sighed: “another lunatic, boy, what can we do? Let’s go.”
The bear smelled the streets and followed the trail from the graveyard toward the centre of the city. The undertaker hadn’t exactly been unhelpful but seemed rather cryptic in his final statement: “They came to me too soon. It wasn’t their time but it’ll soon be.” The report explicitly spoke about one aristocrat with a screw loose but it wouldn’t be any stretch if he had found an associate as mad or drunk as he probably was. As the rider pondered all this the bear followed the repellent perfume with unease. Had he been asked, he would’ve expressed his strong reservations about this endeavour.
In a dank, dark street they came before the aristocrat laughing loudly as he carved the bricks on a wall with fervent passion. “Stop right there, you are detained for assault. Lay down your weapons and prepare for arrest.” The madman grinned towards the duo with his pale teeth glinting under a few moonbeams that escaped between clouds. He threw a dagger and then another but the bear was used to such attacks. It simply charged and let the armour take care of the blades; it satisfactorily did. The aristocrat was trampled and the rider dismounted, only to find that the man had stabbed himself in the body when falling with a third dagger.
She sighed but her disappointment was interrupted by the bear’s blowing and display of teeth. “What’s the matter boy? Don’t be afraid, he’s dead. He won’t try to hurt us anymore.” The bear wanted none of it and run through the street until he arrived at a well lit avenue with a few people still about at this long hour of the night; there he waited. The rider was puzzled but she thought that one can’t really know how an animal is going to behave. When she turned from the bear to pick the body of the man she noticed the carving on the brick-wall. It was that of a notoriously spiked demon holding a card in his hand: Death.
