The echoes of drumming, growled lyrics and screamed choruses resounded in the distance. The waters remanined undisturbed while the Captain stared at the glowing city ahead. “Port in four minutes, Captain.” “Aye.” She hadn’t gotten used to the new look of the streets. If before she felt a stranger in town now she felt an alien. The forests have almost disappeared, only a few remained as parks for entertainment. Most of nature had become obsolete at the unrelenting advance of technology and the mass production of indistinguishable replicas. It wouldn’t take long before a robot took her place but she wasn’t going to make it easy for them.
Actually, there was already one on-board but the terror of water meant that it was usually below deck in, let’s say, administrative activities. The ship docked and she disembarked. The crew knew the motions well so she went into the city without looking back. She did keep her ears open for any trouble but by now it was all routine work for them and her, too. Part of that included going into the neon-lit streets and getting depressed at being a visitor from a century ago.
She walked between shops with bright screens offering all kinds of products. The ‘PROJECT Inc.” shop caught her eye: it seemed to beckon her with images of all the things that she’d always wondered about cybernetics. It seemed to be reading her mind and showing her inner dreams. She didn’t go in. Something told her that it would be wise to give it a wide berth. “When in unknown waters, trust your guts.”
She looked for a pub or bar but couldn’t find one. At least she didn’t recognise any of the many shops as one she could enter and have a pint. She did saw a place with booming electro-music but the fluorescent drinks people had in their hands didn’t look appetising. The metallic appendages with which their held them didn’t seem appealing either. The world had moved on and she was still sailing waters instead of surfing bits. “Come on, I’m all for making life easier with new trinkets but people these days know no limits.” She snorted and looked around at metal and neon.
She traced back her steps, the one’s she remembered at least, to port. “If I had one of those improved brains I wouldn’t be guessing streets, I guess.” Still, a sailor always knows the direction of the sea and she had no problem in returning to her beloved ship. Its wood hull complained at the sea’s rocking. It was an old, cranky one but she wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. It had been in her family, more or less, for quite some time and she wasn’t going to break tradition just to get into these days’ fancy fashion. Her love was the sea and they wouldn’t be apart for long. The First Mate signalled her that all was in order to leave. Again, without looking back she went onboard and sighed at the warm feel of home. “Raise anchor, let’s return to our world.”
