League of Legends: Blitzcrank Skins’ Review – StrategyZero
Mar 062013

Blitzcrank, the Great Steam Golem
Blitzcrank, the Great Steam Golem

Blitzcrank, the Great Steam Golem is rather versatile for being an artificial life form. In fact, many of his skins show him exploring different disciplines and activities with different degrees of success. Therefore, you could say that Blitzcrank can get dressed to the situation and if you are thinking of pulling and knocking someone up then this skins’ review will recommend how to look your best while doing it.

Rusty Blitzcrank
Rusty Blitzcrank Splash Art Rusty Blitzcrank Model
Category: Limited
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Blitzcrank with a rusted surface.
Model: New textures for Blitzcrank.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: The background suggests the bleak landscape of the polluted, industrial streets of Zaun. Unfortunately, there’s little that can be clearly identified. Blitzcrank appears rampaging through the pavement, maybe escaping or just in a bad mood. His depiction is the opposite of the setting: clear, detailed and well shaded; though there are some diffuse parts. His heterochromatic eyes are a good yet misleading touch and the rusty appearance is ultimately not very faithful to the in-game look. Regardless, it’s a splash art that, despite its flaws, manages to give a good impression of Blitzcrank.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Rusty Blitzcrank is indeed just a re-colour that covers the golem’s body with a layer of oxide. The darker metal gives a classic or antique look that doesn’t look bad at all. Besides, the textures show a rough surface that has resisted corrosion but that was still evidently scarred by it. The light colour of the head is a strange choice and the skin sure looks similar to Classic Blitzcrank but has its own identity. Overall, it’s not a bad purchase for Blitzcrank fanatics because while it doesn’t offer anything striking it’s not as bad as its reputation states.

Goalkeeper Blitzcrank
Goalkeeper Blitzcrank Splash Art Goalkeeper Blitzcrank Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Blitzcrank dressed as an association football goalkeeper.
Model: Moderate model changes for Blitzcrank.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: The setting seems to be a football pitch but with a clear steampunk makeover. That has to be deduced from the parts of diffuse elements that one can barely distinguish on the background. Blitzcrank appears catching a Riot-endorsed football as he jumps from the waxy grass. His portrayal is simple but effective. Still, his hands seem too small and unrecognizable, his coloured eyes misleading plus the lightning strikes as somewhat unnecessary. This results in a piece that does its job but that doesn’t really convince.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Goalkeeper Blitzcrank is a great skin that manages to place him as a rather believable football player. The goalkeeper position is a clever choice for this champion so focused on using his large arms. Moreover, the shirt and snickers are not only fitting but they also make Blitzcrank adorable; despite the heavy logo use. The gloves are just a re-texture over simplified hands but they get the job done. All in all, Goalkeeper Blitzcrank is a very good product that fans of football or funny but well thought out looks will appreciate.

Boom Boom Blitzcrank
Boom Boom Blitzcrank Splash Art Boom Boom Blitzcrank Model
Category: Regular
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Blitzcrank styled as a boxer.
Model: Moderate model changes for Blitzcrank.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: The intensely diffuse look of the background gives the idea of a dusty desert or wasteland. Wreckage disturbs its monotony. A single, visible propeller hints at a possible plane crash but the ruins over it look like a collapsed building. In the foreground we find a heap of mechanical parts that reveal robotic characteristics. The scene of devastation from an apocalyptic event is clear but the elements that compose it are a bit too eclectic.
The depiction of Blitzcrank contrasts the background with sharp lines and colours. His metallic surface is detailed and exposes complex shading making the most of his design. The boxing gloves appear photorealistic which doesn’t suit the pencilled feel of his body. Sadly, Blitzy’s back, shorts and legs are blurred and appear sketchy. His left leg and foot escape a bit from the fog but don’t reach the pleasing depiction of his body. The fact that a boxing robot makes little sense in the setting he is placed doesn’t diminish the impact of the portrayal. However, it does deprive him of a proper context to give relevance to his existence.
The result is an attractive but uneven portrayal with a diffuse background that doesn’t make sense. The aim of the splash art is accomplished but in a convoluted way.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Boom Boom Blitzcrank tries to adapt the boxer role to a large automaton and the effect isn’t actually very funny or refined. Blitzcrank’s physique definitely suits the sport but the implementation seems forced. The model gets a new shape for the body and textures, besides the shorts and gloves, which deliver the concept but don’t make it shine. In fact, without the huge boxing gloves Blitzcrank just looks weird. The bruised eye could be considered an extra though it hardly makes him look any better. In the end, the skin’s concept has potential but the execution doesn’t exploit it. A more aggressive modification could make Blitzcrank a better pugilist but like this it’s barely OK.

Piltover Customs Blitzcrank
Piltover Customs Blitzcrank Splash Art Piltover Customs Blitzcrank Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Blitzcrank adapted into a motorized robot.
Model: Major model changes for Blitzcrank plus fire and smoke for his exhaust pipes.
Particles: New particles for Overdrive.
Animations: New animations for standing idle, run, taunt and dance.
Sounds: New engine sounds and occasional horn for Overdrive.
Splash Art: The whole of the piece is evidently blurry and while the effect is meant to suggest speed it simply makes the colours muddy. Furthermore, there isn’t much of a setting as the background can be summarized in three words: street and sky. Blitzcrank’s depiction is good but the mute colours don’t help. The multiple dents and few reflections add some flare but it doesn’t rise above correct. On the whole, it’s a useful and adequate splash art but a former legendary skin deserved much better.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Piltover Customs Blitzcrank is a skin that shows its age but that still offers some attractive features. The model is unique and fascinating with its pronounced but appealing modifications. Besides, the smoke and flames constantly escaping the exhaust pipes are a nice complement to the theme. The new animations are minimal; much like how Rocket Grab is affected by his tuned figure. However, Overdrive receives nice particles and sounds that effectively develop the motorization. To sum up, it’s evident that Piltover Customs Blitzcrank doesn’t offer the same level of quality as current legendary skins; which explains the demotion. However, it offers a fantastic concept and a satisfying execution so, despite its age, it still is a good choice.

Definitely Not Blitzcrank

Category: Legacy
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Blitzcrank undercover as an ordinary fleshling.
Model: Moderate model changes for Blitzcrank.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: The first thing that is noticeable about the background is how monochromatic it appears. Still, it allows a setting to emerge but the murky colour palette doesn’t let it come to life. In spite of this, the city and surprised citizens anchor the piece as a funny scene. Fortunately, Blitzcrank’s portrayal doesn’t disappoint: he proudly walks in his excellent costume; completely disguised as a common human. The stance is certainly appealing and also allows a good view of his fine clothes. Moreover, while the lines tend to exaggerate and be a bit sketchy, his right leg for instance, the shading does a great job at adding folds and patterns. All things considered, it’s a piece that can be improved upon but that works as an attractive portrayal of Blitzcrank’s habit of blending in the crowds.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Definitely Not Blitzcrank is an ingenious skin with a satisfying but simple execution: take Blitzcrank, give him a jacket, shirt and tie, a couple of big gloves, a wig and Groucho glasses. On the one hand, it’s certainly unimpressive but on the other hand it’s a rather clever concept. The interest of artificial life-forms in understanding humans is a classic and suitable idea that works well with Blitzcrank. In the end, Definitely Not Blitzcrank is a simple but appealing skin and, considering the reasonable price, no steam golem fan would be disappointed.

iBlitzcrank
iBlitzcrank Splash Art iBlitzcrank Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Blitzcrank as an advanced android.
Model: New model for Blitzcrank and new glowing lines for his body.
Particles: New particles for his abilities and death.
Animations: New animations for Overdrive, Power fist, walking, death and critical hits.
Sounds: New sounds for Rocket Grab, Overdrive and death.
Splash Art: At first glance, the piece shows a distinct but restricted colour palette. On the one hand, it sets a distinct identity but on the other it looks a bit monotonous. The setting is conveyed to an extent as the background favours large empty spaces filled with just one colour; an advanced laboratory can be deduced but nothing more. Blitzcrank’s depiction is actually quite impressive thanks to the fine lines and polished surface that allow multiple reflections to shine. Unfortunately, these reflections aren’t very revealing about the surroundings; as one could expect. Regardless, there’s an ample amount of lighting effects on his depiction that put the background to shame; making for a stark contrast in quality. All in all, it’s definitely a great portrayal of Blitzcrank but the background isn’t able to match it.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: iBlitzcrank is without doubt a skin with a well defined and unique character. The hi-tech android feel is perfectly conveyed through the new model, particles, animations and sounds. Not everything is changed but what is looks great. The model is polished and streamlined making Blitzcrank look not only futuristic but also effective. The additional changes reinforce this, especially how he powers down when dying. Unfortunately, Rocket Grab seems a little too flashy and the Overdrive hover doesn’t really suit him; even in his new persona he doesn’t have the means to fly. Nonetheless, they are minor issues as the skin delivers a good theme with attractive visuals. In the end, iBlitzcrank is an excellent skin that retains the core of Blitzcrank but gives him an appealing layer of advanced technology. The asking price surely is high but the skin delivers enough to make it a worthwhile purchase.

Riot Blitzcrank
Riot Blitzcrank Splash Art Riot Blitzcrank Model
Category: Promotional (available during events)
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Blitzcrank as a riot control automata.
Model: New model for Blitzcrank and blinking emergency light during Overdrive.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: New recall animation and closing visor for Overdrive.
Sounds: New sounds for Rocket Grab, Overdrive, Power Fist and recall.
Splash Art: A desolate battlefield displays its festering wounds while Graves proudly stands with his smoking firearm. Before him, Blitzcrank provides cover, one that his scarred armour shows to come at a cost. As a setup for Blitzcrank’s new look this piece makes a great job. The background is reasonably clear and significant while Blitzcrank simply looks fantastic. His armour is highly detailed and finely shaded with ample use of light effects. The only issue seems to be an unnecessarily pronounced blur on the right of the piece that more than convey distance it simply muddies the depiction. All in all, this is a wonderful splash art that makes a very good job at showing Blitzcrank’s new endeavour.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Riot Blitzcrank turns him into a police-robot that despite his broad design manages to appear effective. The appearance is hardly innovative but remains attractive with the expected additions like a shoulder siren and an emergency light over his head. Besides, the armour combines metal and padding to approximate contemporary looks. The addition of new animations and sounds is welcome as they nicely further the theme. Thus, on the whole, Riot Blitzcrank is hardly a striking skin but it does have appeal. The result is feasible enough, thanks to a touch of humour, which makes Blitzcrank attractive beyond the modest changes. In conclusion, a good option for Blitzcrank’s fans and those with a liking for the forces of order.

Battle Boss Blitzcrank
Battle Boss Blitzcrank Splash Art Battle Boss Blitzcrank Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Blitzcrank as an 8-bit battle-robot.
Model: New model for Blitzcrank.
Particles: New particles for his abilities, auto-attack and death.
Animations: New walking, pincer and recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for his abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Splash Art: The setting is a digital dome surrounded by emptiness. The plates reflect light in different hues of blue but that’s all there is. It’s a serviceable background but also weak as a setting. The context is provided by the selection grid at the bottom which reveals the piece as a pre-battle screen. That gives relevance to the composition but is too little to offset the problems present. In the foreground, Riven and Blitzcrank stand between fighting and posing as they don’t really face or even look at each other. It makes sense given the context but they do feel disconnected instead of integrated into one single scene.
Riven’s portrayal is, in general terms, rather good. It’s moderately easy to get a good idea of her look; even if her left arm doesn’t help and her right one is hidden behind her. The rest is well depicted: colourful and with nice lighting yet the saturated colours give the depiction a solid, heavy feel that doesn’t match the digital angle. Regardless, it’s possible to appreciate many details of her new look and the stance is eye-catching.
Conversely, Blitzcrank isn’t very clearly portrayed. Perhaps due to his bulky frame and the close perspective it’s difficult to appreciate the differences with his classic style besides the new face, pincer and pixellated chest screen. The colours are also quite muddy and only the electricity adds some life to the portrayal. His lower body is also missing which, in this particular case, is rather relevant. There are details to notice, marks, dents and such, the design of the pincer is finely shown yet detail appears only in specific areas.
All in all, this is a piece where there isn’t enough room for both champions. Skins at this high price imply that the champion’s depiction has to be the centre of attention as well as being representative of their personality. In this case, it seems like both champions are posing one in front of the other yet each on their own; completely disconnected to the rest. The problem may be in the organization and distribution of the piece as not only there’s practically no interaction between them but their portrayals are too straightforward. The selection screen composition is good but not brought to life effectively which makes the concessions and flaws all the more significant. This results in a splash art that works at showing Riven and Blitzcrank’s new looks but that, overall, isn’t as evocative as it deserves.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Halfway between a toy and a game character Battle Boss Blitzcrank is a skin that does evident alterations to the Steam Golem’s design but that never emphasises them. In a sense, it changes the surface but the core remains. The most significant modification is probably the new model which omits legs in favour of a continuous track and a pincer for a right hand. The back with a jet and a cartridge port as well as the colourful paintjob allow the Golem to avoid comparisons to Godzilla’s Colossus of Atlantis. The appearance is certainly distinct and catches the eye but it doesn’t look like a dangerous enemy. Instead, it seems to be a robot toy coloured to catch the eye.
The particles also feel weak. They have some distinct and interesting pixellated designs but the ones that stand out are the ones applied directly on Blitzcrank; like the fire-thruster, shield or glowing fists. The particles that appear when he attacks don’t feel impactful. Rocket Grab has a rather nice design, though, and contributes to defining the skin’s unique personality.
The sounds fare similar to the particles: they also feel weak and even in attacks the absence of impact is noticeable. The chiptunes are appropriate but, again, it’s Mana Barrier, Overdrive and Power Fist that grab attention better than the attacks.
All things considered, Battle Boss Blitzcrank is a good skin that doesn’t push the concept enough to make an implementation that embraces the few radical changes. There are parts of the skin that feel worthwile but most of it is just more 8-bit style without any features that make them special. For its price, Battle Boss Blitzcrank should do more. Had the price been lower it could be worth recommending but, as it stands, it’s better left for fans of Steam Golems and 8-bit nostalgia.

Lancer Rogue Blitzcrank
Lancer Rogue Blitzcrank Splash Art Lancer Rogue Blitzcrank Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Blitzcrank as a fantasy, dark golem.
Model: New model for Blitzcrank and new fire for his jet turbines.
Particles: New particles for his abilities, auto-attack, death and recall.
Animations: New animations for Overdrive, Static Field and recall.
Sounds: New sounds for his abilities, auto-attack, death and recall plus processed voice-over.
Splash Art: Soldiers fleeing, unable to match the power of the machine in front of them. Straightforward, sure, but effective. The blur to emphasise movement prevents a clear view of the surroundings but there isn’t that much to see. In fact, we have generic soldiers, some trees and a thunderstorm; it seems. While the background works to provide context it’s also more serviceable than meaningful.
Blitzcrank’s depiction stands between the blur and the clearer, well lit, area that is the centre of the piece. Lightning is quite good but the metal plates tend to look a bit sketchy under close examination. The same happens with the fire from the turbines while the arms are buried in a fog. The perspective does prefer show over function but, thanks to the Lancer’s specific design, it’s enough to get an idea of the small body. Regardless, it doesn’t provide a good view of the look as a quick comparison with the in-game model verifies. Besides, for a skin based on providing a new hook for Blitzcrank is perplexingly curious that the splash art largely omits it. There’s a lot of suggestion but the actual star of the skin is barely visible.
Overall, this is a splash art made simple. It’s an effective yet too direct presentation card that does what it needs to and tries to add some extra impact at the expense of clarity. The flaws are clear but the basic function of the splash art manages to be covered; for the most part.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Advanced and efficient the design of Lancer Rogue Blitzcrank is as much fantasy as it is sci-fi. Between these two worlds the dark knight robot is centred on function but doesn’t ignore having a good style. The dark plates with golden highlights make for a grim yet regal style while the elongated spaulders seem like wings to aid in flight. The sharp lines of his claws match the hook’s. This is an advanced warrior for a new kind of battlefield.
Particles follow the dim yellow feel of his turbine’s fire. The dark tone means that they don’t contrast the dark plates much. Conversely, it gives a more consistent grim style to the whole design. Unfortunately, that also means that some abilities end up rather visually quiet. In particular, Power Fist can be rather subtle about the particles and Overdrive too straightforward and simple. That doesn’t happen with the others. However, it’s a bit surprising to see so much blue in Static field’s detonation. It does match the dark plates but makes the discharge seem weak and lacklustre. This is particularly startling in comparison with the passive’s distinct lightning arcs; which has a nice fire blast design. One aspect that is a great touch is the golden lines that light up on Blitzcrank’s body while Static Field’s passive is on. Being a hook-based skin Rocket Grab requires a special note. The hook has a lethal design, similar in both Lancer skins, but the fire particles are unfittingly frugal. It seems like a powerful move but with its aggressive force deemphasised.
Sounds are actually similar to the classic version but with a different feel. The classic template is respected but with a rough, unstable electric feel to it all. It’s quite a fitting and aggressive aural landscape but one that seems a bit dull in comparison with the powerful electric streaks visible. The voice-over also receives a lower, darker tone that is fitting yet also familiar and derivative.
Animations are few but welcome; those unchanged don’t always work well, the walk-float is rather funny. Overdrive’s new flight keeps things consistent but also reinforces the new design’s personality with its rotating hook. Static Field’s detonation may not have an impressive animation yet the action supports that fact that all of Blitzcrank’s power is discharged in one single burst. The recall is mostly show and seems to reuse part of the death animation. It’s mostly show even if it tries to give some extra use to the hook as a drill; which actually dilutes the hook’s function as such.
All added together, Lancer Rogue Blitzcrank is a skin whose main feature is the new design which permeates many other aspects of the skin. The particles can feel dull, lacking in power and intensity and the sounds derivative. Fortunately, the animations add to the identity of the skin; mostly. This results in a skin with many nice features yet not all of them stand out as much as they could’ve. It’s undoubtedly a dark variation of the Lancer Blitzcrank line which means that most aspects are shared. While each has their own style, it’s superficial so there isn’t much reason to get both skins unless you are a great fan of the Lancers.

Lancer Paragon Blitzcrank
Lancer Paragon Blitzcrank Splash Art Lancer Paragon Blitzcrank Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Blitzcrank as a fantasy, paladin golem.
Splash Art: As the splash art for a complementary skin it’s no surprise to see so many similarities. The background is almost the same but without a thunderstorm and with smoke instead of fire for the turbines. Functionally, the same is depicted but with a lighter, less grim style. The blur is also less intense but, as in the other splash art, there’s little to see so much space is filled by empty sky. The rightmost solider looks noticeably less diffuse than those nearby.
Blitzcrank also appears more sharply depicted thanks to the reduced blur. This means that diffuse parts are minimised, even though they still exist like the right turbine or the arms. The plates do look sketchy and while they can pass for a gritty depiction that’s not really the style of the piece. Lighting is good and there’s a nice contrast between the golden decorations and the plates. The perspective is as focused on style as in the complementary splash art but, given that it’s enough to give a general idea of Blitzcrank’s look and that the blur is diminished the result is a more complete view of his design. Nevertheless, his hook, star of the skin’s design, is also largely omitted; which certainly remains a puzzling choice.
As a variation on an existing splash art the differences clearly lay in the surface. It could be said, though, that as one skin is a variation on the other the splash arts are only true to their source. That also means that ups and downs are shared and, even though this piece has a more judicious use of blur, the main issues remain. The result is as serviceable as in the complementary splash art. It’s effective but form trumps function once again.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: The shard-like design of Lancer Paragon Blitzcrank intends to display the Golem as a paladin robot. The rounded and pointy monocular head is echoed by the shoulders for a three spike effect that gives the design a clear identity. The light colour of the plates is the most salient characteristic which the decorative bronze doesn’t manage to contrast effectively. The design has a practical feel but with a clear, light styling that sets it apart.
Particles are mainly based on white fire as seen coming out of the turbines. On the one hand the light particle colour allows them to easily stand out against darker surroundings. On the other hand, there isn’t much contrast against the light plates and the design can feel too homogeneous. In spite of this, they tend to be eye-catching. Overdrive has added rings to the turbine’s fire which adds a nice touch of personality to the ability. Static Field’s passive lightning arcs are too simplistic but the streaks of electricity seen in the detonation are striking. A nice touch that too easily can pass unnoticed is the bright lines across Blitzcrank’s body when Static Field’s passive is on. Being the plates and glow so light in colour they easily mesh together so that a great asset of the skin can be ignored. It’s a good touch but perhaps if darker or bronze lines were added around the glows they could’ve accomplished a nicer contrast. Special mention is owed to Rocket Grab as this is a hook-based skin. The aforementioned hook has a deadly design, similar between both Lancer skins, with clear, almost ethereal electricty as support. While this doesn’t reinforce the power and lethality of the skill it does give it a magical feel that works well with the paladin identity.
Sounds respect the classic template with a brighter electric feel. The electricity feels lighter and with reliance on bursts. It suits well the paladin identity as it adds a magical touch to the electricity and leaves behind the raw, mechanical power. The voice-over is also changed to be clearer as if the voice is simply modified by the armour and not produced artificially. It’s a subtle effect, though, and the result is still similar to classic.
Animations are quite nice; new ones because unchanged ones don’t always work well, like the walk-float shows. Overdrive’s new flight not only keeps things consistent but also reinforces the skin’s identity thanks to the rotating hook. Static Field’s new animation is nothing revolutionary but supports the idea that all of Blitzcrank’s power is discharged in one single burst. The new recall is mostly show on Blitzcrank’s part. The final part where the hook is used as a rocket to propel the Golem up and away gives a mixed message. While the hook is ejected there’s no actual turbine or any other method in the arm which would explain the effect. This action also dilutes the main function of the hook. Grabbing on to something would’ve made more sense.
There’s no shadow of a doubt that Lancer Paragon Blitzcrank is a variation on Lancer Rogue. While the identity is different it all remains in the surface: the core is identical. The changes manage to fix some problems with Rogue yet the Paragon also adds a few of its own; not the least the less than impressive Static Field glow. As a complementary skin it’s quite good but with so much shared it’s a matter of choosing the preferred style because there isn’t enough to justify both skin unless you are a Lancer fan.

Witch’s Brew Blitzcrank
Witch's Brew Blitzcrank Splash Art Witch's Brew Blitzcrank Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Blitzcrank as an automaton-cauldron
Model: New model for Blitzcrank. New glow for his head-eye and new bubbling for the body-cauldron’s contents. New trail of blots when walking.
Particles: New particles for his abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for his abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Splash Art: Aside from showing Blitzcrank’s new look this splash art’s only value is in the background cameos. Said background isn’t even defined: we see rocks, a night sky but only the characters give context to the piece. All characters are rather diffuse, which is too much for those in the background and simply disappointing for Blitzcrank. As the star of the piece a general idea of his look is allowed but many highlights fail to shine as they could. At best, his head as a magical eye is interesting.
The result is a splash art that is straightforward and unnecessarily unfocused on its real purpose: to show a champion in their best light in an interesting context.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Witch’s Brew Blitzcrank is a charming skin with a faint creepiness spiced by a touch of humour. The model already gives an idea of what to expect with a design for the automaton-cauldron that is cartoony yet appealing.
Particle effects are added on top of the model yet they feel subtle. That’s no exception as abilities’ particles also share this trait. With soft glows and mists only the few electric streaks add some power. The liquid spills are a good touch for Static Field’s active but the passive, with its lightning is a highlight.
Sounds follow the comedic creepiness style of the visuals. They often feel lacking in personality, as if they merely fit in the theme. Static Field’s lightning is, again, a highlight.
The recall is a good enough reference, albeit simple, to a witch’s cauldron.
All in all, Witch’s Brew Blitzcrank is nice. It does enough to offer a cartoony take on a walking cauldron with the help of machinery to power the being. There’re some areas that stand out but the skin seems content with its shallow approach so that the identity ends up lacking depth.

Conclusion

There’s little doubt that most of Blitzcrank’s skins are past their due in terms of quality. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that iBlitzcrank is the recommended skin. It may have its issues, price included, but the well developed advanced android feel manages to make up for them. It’s certainly an imperfect skin but worth recommending anyway.

One of the most expensive options is Battle Boss Blitzcrank which competes at a high price with the other skins. The idea is good and there are areas where the skin pushes the envelope. However, mostly, it just relies on the 8-bit factor to stand out without contributing much of its own. For its price, much more is necessary to make it a great choice so only fanatics may apply.

Both Lancer Paragon and Rogue Blitzcrank are variations on the same core. The surface is different but there’s a lot that is different. Each skin has their strengths and weaknesses so that neither stands above the other. Both owe most of their appeal to the new model’s design. Rogue has a great use of contrast to highlight several abilities but is uneven across them all. Paragon has more eye-catching particles yet also is more homogeneous in general. In the end it’s a matter of whether a paladin or a dark knight robot is more to your liking. You could very well like both but they share so much that the differences end up too superficial. Still, neither skin is a bad choice. It’s just that there’s a lot of familiarity between the two.

Witch’s Brew Blitzcrank is a charming skin with a cartoony take on a walking, automated cauldron. There’s an appealing identity left shallow by changes without personality. There are some highlights but too few to make the skin stand out. The result manages to be nice but it’s impossible to miss the lack of depth in the skin.

The few remaining options show their age but still have some attractive features to offer. Boom Boom Blitzcrank may be the best boxer the League has and Piltover Customs Blitzcrank the best motorized automata. Nevertheless, while the changes aren’t deep they manage to set the idea in motion; even if in the end they fail to impress.

  1. Thx for da review 😀 really appreciate it

  2. I’m not so sure but I think there is a slight sound effect added to Riot Blitzcrank’s Rocket Grab. It is like an electrical taser sound. I might be mistaken though.

  3. Hey Zero

    Great reviews, thanks.
Do you know if Riot Blitzcrank will be available again this year? and if so when would it most likely be available again?

    • No problem, glad that you like them.

Riot Blitzcrank is supposed to be made available during events like PAX so at that time it should return to the store. There may be other events that would make the skin available but we don’t really know which ones Riot would attend.

What we are sure is that if they are present at an event then Riot Blitzcrank should be made available again. It will also be made available before it retires to the Legacy Vault to make way for another Riot skin. So, at the very least, it should return to the store once more.

  4. Which one is better to buy? Piltover Customs or iBlitzcrank?

    • We would recommend iBlitzcrank. The difference in technical terms is noticeable and the modifications to Blitzcrank are significant and attractive. Piltover Customs is a different take that shows its age but has some nice extras. Still iBlitzcrank is the one to get; especially if you catch it on sale.

  5. Will you be reviewing Chroma Packs?

  6. Hey Zero, i recently opened the goalkeeper blitzcrank skin in a mystery skin and when checking out the emotes in game I noticed that he actually has a special joke. He says, “I put the gol in golem,” then explains that he is making a joke and that other golems find that funny. I suppose it being a legacy skin makes correcting that of low concern, but i thought I’d share it with you either way.

    • That’s one of Blitzy’s classic jokes which is used across all of his skins. Therefore, it’s not unique to Goalkeeper though we agree that it’s the most suitable in that case.

  7. Any info. about Battle Boss Blitzcrank?

    • It’s a rather nice skin but it should do a bit more to embrace its 8-bit style. The main problem is the price with regards to what it offers. Battle Boss could very well be a 975 RP skin so the extra price should mean some extra features.

  8. Is Piltover Customs Blitzcrank still a good choice? I personally like that skin out of all of them and I read over your reviews, with all these blitzcrank skins is that one still a good choice? also when you use his (W) Overdrive how often does the horn honk

    • It’s an outdated skin that has its charm but shows its age. At 1350 RP there are better options but it has it’s unique identity. The horn isn’t used much, it may be a random occurrence, but from time to time it can be heard.

If you like the skin then you can perfectly get it on sale at a much more reasonable price. If Piltover Customs is the style you like then the other skins, regardless of additions and how modern they are, won’t be able to offer the same that Piltover Customs can.

  9. Off hand, how many stars would you say BB blitz or arcade riven would be if they were 975 rp. The skins since they are currently on sale for that price, seem solid. I think I could like them, and I really don’t like any of riven’s other skins. The blitz one has to compete with iblitz which is my favorite skin for him. But I feel at 975 both are pretty solid skins. Since they go off sale soon, your thoughts would be appreciated sooner than later, but I understand you’re a busy man. God speed to you.

    • At a lower price you can perfectly add at least a star to each skin; we’ll have to see if they would deserve more. For what they offer they don’t really seem impressive enough for 1350 RP; especially when other skins at 975 RP offer so much and so well done. The main piont is that if a skin asks for an extra expense then it has to offer something beyond the usual. In the cases of both Battle Boss Blitzcrank and Arcade Riven they could perfectly be 975 RP skins; that’s a problem.

The sale finishes today, hopefully the answer reaches you in time. Sorry for the delay.

  10. Hello Zero, its me again
Time to do another question, haha

I have some skins that i got at discounted prices (at sales) i wanted to now what would you think of them with a lower price, if they would won another star or something..

    Piltover customs Blitzcrank:687RP (50% off)
    Hazmat Heimerdinger: 487RP(50% off)
Earnest elf tristana: 490RP (Mystery gift)
    Celestine Soraka: 490RP (Mystery gift)
    Woad King Darius:292RP (Snowdown shop)

    thanks, as always.

PD: Piltover custom blitz is my favorite one, even if he is 3star here 🙂

    • Usually a skin at a lower price can get an extra star as it lowers the barrier of entry. Also take into account that we do consider sales when reviewing a skin. Some skins are recommended to be bought only during a sale, for example. It’s one of the reasons why we ask more from a legacy skin from an event. They also commemorate a special ocassion so they should be something that pushes the envelope.

From the skins you list, all of them are good. Some are more than good but none are bad. The lower prices certainly make them more appealing. Regardless, neither the price nor the amount of features is what ultimately makes a skin attractive. That’s one’s own personal preference and, as you indicate, is why you like Piltover Customs Blitz over the others despite being the most expensive of the bunch.

The price of a skin determines the value with regards to what it offers. That is relevant as a guide which is what the rating is. The review goes into the specifics but only to inform about what is offered and how well the message is transmitted. Don’t worry about prices, centre on what you really like. The sales will help with the expenses but there’s little point in getting a cheap skin you don’t like. Get skins you like and try to save RP to get what you enjoy.

      • Thanks for the answer :), I always try to get skins that i really like in sales, and piltover custom blitz really won my attention. I saw it in a sale and it was insta-buy .

I like every skin i have, im not gonna buy skins that i dont really like even if they can get cheap or something.

PS: The only problem i see in piltover custom blitz is the splash, it just doesn´t fit with the cool skin it is. I prefer the chinese splash of it, it looks cool like it is in-game :3

PS (2): I love this website, i use it everytime, keep up the work 😀

PS (3):Maybe a little out of place, but what is your opinion on champs with few skins/ What champion would need a skin?

        • We are glad you find the site useful. We’ll keep working hard.

We don’t give that much importance to splash arts as they are irrelevant when in-game. They do serve as a skin’s presentation card and set the expectations of what the skin delivers. In that regard, they have relevance but when all is said and done what really matters is what you get in flat three-dimensions.

In the name of popularity there are champions with an endless list of skins. It’s understandable but a good skin can also make a champion more interesting to play. That’s why we think that resources should be spread more equally among champions. If it’s a rather recent champion then it’s understandable that there would be few skins. However, there are some old champions that aren’t really unpopular yet have very few skins. In those cases, they should be given priority.

Riot knows the numbers and that’s all well and good. Yet they shouldn’t forget that in life statistics are only a generalization. When one sets to choose a champion and a skin it doesn’t matter which is played the most. The preferences of the few are as valid as that of the many.

  11. Blitzcrank’s rusty appearance from the splash art is not very faithful to his in-game look because it’s an old chinese splash of his basic skin, not the rusty one, as far as I know. I look forward to his VU when they (hopefully) make the skin a bit more rusty and (hopefully) give us the option of buying it again (limited skins became available before).

Can I point out a typo? Goalkeeper Blitzcrank splash art: “That’s has to be deduced from the parts of…”

Also, in Piltover Customs splash art and skin descriptions, it implies that it is a legendary skin, although it’s priced at 1350, which would put it either below the regular tag or, if you want to use the Riot term, Imperial.

In Battle Boss Blitzcrank’s splash, the reason why it seems like both champions are posing one in front of the other and there’s practically no interaction between them is because the piece is trying to replicate old arcade games’ selection menu/loading screen where two characters are preparing for battle in much the same poses, thus the x Vs y at the bottom.

Is there any progress reviewing the Croma Packs?

Keep up the awesome work! Looking forward to Boom Boom Blitzcrank’s new chinese splash review! I love you guys!

    • That would explain why Rusty’s splash art is anything but that. It’s a nice skin but probably not repurposed with the best accuracy. Hopefully, a visual upgrade will make it much more interesting and also available again.

We’ll fix the typo and inexact allusions; thanks for the correction. The clearer the reviews are the better a they should be as useful as possible as a guide.

We understand what you mention about the idea behind Battle Boss Blitzcrank’s splash art. We still don’t see it clearly conveyed though we like it. The portrayal’s seems forced to fit in little space and don’t really allow a good representation for the champions. The little selection grid underneath seems like too little consolation for the problems of each champion’s portrayal. We’ll make it clearer in the review that battle screen reference but we still think the piece could’ve better presented the champions.

The chroma packs reviews are in out to-do list. We inted to review them though we have to work out a few details with regards to chromas for paid skins. When we have some time we’ll try to review them but we prioritise new content so it’ll get delayed.

We’ll surely keep working hard to make the reviews as useful as they can be. We’ll try to update the reviews with the new splash arts as soon as we can. Thanks for all the love and help.

  12. Question, do u buy all these skins or something. How can u review all of them. Does riot give u an account with all skins to test on or something. Rusty blitzcrank is really really rare and only a few thousand ppl have that skin

    • We try to buy as many skins as possible to make the reviews. Skins are reviewed with a common live account. We analyse what everybody else sees when playing and try to have the exact same expierence that any player would have. We have no connection with Riot and have received nothing from them. We don’t own every single skin but we try to give a good analysis by checking as much information as possible. That includes from playing the classic skin as a base for comparison to checking videos in slow motion or seeing looping animations on a model viewer.

  13. what would be better? battle boss or iblitzcrank

    • iBlitzcrank is the overall superior skin. The concept is appealing and also suits Blitzy quite well. The implementation is attractive and manages to realise the refined, modern aesthetic.

Battle Boss is more distinct with quite an interesting model and Rocket Grab. However, the execution is also more uneven and there are many additions that disappoint. The 8-bit feel of the skin isn’t always well communicated.

We recommend iBlitzcrank is you want the skin that can be more satisfying. However, Battle Boss is more ambitious. It doesn’t make the best job with the potential it has but stands apart from the usual.

  14. Hey, i was wondering which one i should get. Definitely not blitzcrank or Battle Boss Blitzcrank

    • They are radically different skins in most aspects. Definitely Not Blitzcrank is a partial re-model with a funny, perhaps even clever, take on a robot’s personality. Battle Boss Blitzcrank is an elaborate but in many aspects underwhelming transformation with some nice features. The price reflects the extent and ambition of each skin but is also a reflection of how difficult it is to accomplish what they aim for.

Neither skin should disappoint as long as you take them for what they can offer. We like the modest yet effective Definitely Not Blitzcrank. Battle Boss offers more but doesn’t round its theme as well as it should.

  15. So, iblitz is going on sale next month and I was just wondering if you knew if riot blitz will go on sale any time soon?
I personally think riot blitz is a much better skin. I would originally say this about piltover customs but it went on sale like 2 months ago 😛
I don’t think I’ve ever noticed riot blitzcrank on sale and I feel like I want a blitzcrank skin.
Also, does iblitzcrank have any particle changed on its ultimate? I only play blitz on rotation and stuff but I’ve got him to mastery 3 without owning him xD so I don’t really notice every detail like I would with a champion I play a lot like kennen or something.

    • If we recall correctly, Riot Blitzcrank is available during events like PAX. It was available but we don’t think it was discounted; much like a legacy skin tied to a specific event. We agree that it’s a nice skin that accomplishes an appealing identity with few changes.

Piltover Customs has a distinct model but the skin is certainly outdated. For what it offers it’s only worthwhile getting on sale. If you like it we would advise to wait for a discount. It does have its charm but the rough spots are noticeable.

iBlitzcrank is a much more elaborate skin in comparison. With a comprehensive adaptation it distils the golem into a large, advanced android. Also, it includes new particles, animations and sounds; though only all the particles are new. The abilities employ a style similar to electricity inside a plasma globe which is attractive even if a little brittle. Static Field is a clear example of the new style of the particles which you can appreciate in the screenshot at the top right. Overall, it’s a refined take on Blitzy that any fan of the Steam Golem would appreciate.

In the foreseeable future, we don’t know of any events that could prompt Riot Blitzcrank to return to the store. Regardless, if that’s the skin you prefer then iBlitzcrank won’t be able to stand in as a substitute. It offers a different concept with little in common between the skins. If you like iBlitzcrank for what it is, a modern take on the golem, then it can be a nice skin. However, you’ll end up disappointed if you want it to be something it isn’t.

If you don’t really play Blitzcrank that much then either skin could end up being rather pricey. There are more modest options though they all come with their own set of issues. In the end, consider whether you’ll play Blitzcrank enough to warrant spending on a skin. Then, choose the one you really like.

  16. What do you think of Sewn Chaos Amumu and Blitzcrank? I know they never released them but I think the Amumu one was not that bad. Also the art was pretty good in my opinion ( https://www.artstation.com/artwork/GJl31 ). Do you agree with them not releasing the skins?

    • Oh, sorry, you already gave your opinion in the Amumu page. Maybe you can tell me a little bit about the quality of the splashart?

    • The skins had potential and were fixable. In fact, worse skins have been released, since then, which could’ve perfectly have been removed by the same criterium used to remove Sewn Chaos Amumu and Blitzcrank.

The splash displays an uneven quality in the depiction, as is the norm nowadays. It did, however, had a good setup with both champions as Annie’s toys. It’s a pity that splash arts keep on repeating the same problems; many which aren’t a matter of taste.

In any case, we don’t really see why these Sewn Chaos skins were so bad that needed to be retired. Especially, seeing how things have progressed in terms of skins. Still, it’s Riot’s call so there’s nothing to be said or done about it.

  17. Hey Zero! Nice reviews! Also, do you know if Goalkeeper Blitz is going to be available again someday? I didn´t play back in 2014 so I don´t know if it is possible to buy it while the World Cup is happening.

    • Glad that you like the reviews. The football skins are supposedly reserved for World Cups but there have been times when a skin from a specific event has made its ways to a bundle. That said, football skins have been very elusive. They don’t often are made available and Riot hasn’t stated any concrete plan about them that we know of. The general idea is that skins return when the associated event is in course. Sorry we can’t be more specific.

  18. Lelouch of the Rebelion anyone? Knightmare anyone? no? ok

    • You’re right, the style is similar. This fantasy armour aesthetic has been used in other places. The Vision of Escaflowne has some similarities though it’s a bit grittier, surprisingly, than Code Geass in mecha design.

      • I find that Lancer Paragon aesthetic is the same as Suzakus Knightmare “Lancelot” whereas Lancer rogue is very very close to the Knightmares of the Japanese fraction (I mean Todoh’s and those other 4 guys” of Zero’s accomplices. It has been a while since i watched the anime so I might have something mixed up but I am like 99% sure they got some inspiration from there at least for Paragon. Ofcourse adapted to blitzcranks chubbier style.

        • There are some similarities. We find the style used in the Lancer skins a bit more fantastic, as if in mechas with medieval fantasy armour. That’s why we recalled Escaflowne. It’s not exactly the same aesthetic and we are sure we’ve seen it before. It’s far from something new but it’s quite nice anyway.

  19. Another interesting feature of Bitz’s skin “Riot” is very clear reference, if not complete moder ripoff from “Real steel” movie. At some point, there was robot fight with vandals, and this sort of appearance was taken entirely from that robot. Look it up, I think it is very nice reference)

  20. Lancer Blitzcrank’s walking animation heavily brings down the skin for me, woulda been a 4.5 star skin if he didnt walk like a penguin despite hovering, still don’t get riots excuse of clarity though cause you can clearly see its blitzcrank from the loading screen and leaderboard. But they can give a motorcycle to vayne and caitlyn and no “clarity” issues will come up.

    • Sometimes justification is just that; not a sensible explanation. We don’t see a problem with giving a new walking animation to Lancer Blitzcrank; with that argument no legendaries or ultimates would have new animations. We agree: reusing the classic animation makes Blitzcrank look weird and isn’t very clear, actually.

At the very least the animation should’ve been adapted. Given that he hovers it probably would’ve been a new animation. Overdrive does use a new animation to better suit his hover so in only makes sense to change the walking animation.

  21. Still can’t decide … I need help iBlitzcrank or Lancer Paragon Blitzcrank. I love them both but iBlitz looks a bit better but Lancer Paragon has better effects

    • Both are great skins. We find iBlitzcrank as a rather consistent skin even if it doesn’t have definite highlights. With Lancer Paragon Blitzcrank the particles are clearly eye-catching but there are few issues here and there. iBlitzcrank is also starting to show its age a bit but manages to avoid any questionable aspects in the adaptation like the weird walk-float of the Lancer skins.

They are good options both of them so regardless of which one you pick you probably won’t be disappointed. It also depends on which concept you like the most and whether you are alright with a skin that may be uneven but have bigger moments than a more balanced one. Given the high price of the skins we recommend to catch them on sale.

  22. Why Lancer Rogue Blitzcrank and Lancer Paragon Blitzcrank are 4 stars, they don’t change the walk animation, while skins like battle boss do it and have the same price

    • In terms of new animations the Lancers change two abilities while Battle Boss Blitzcrank changes the walk and the pincer; recall aside. Thus, there is work on the animation side. It can be arguable which approach is better but that’s not what really sets the Lancers apart. The particles and added glows to the model make them stand out. A problem with pixellated particles is that often they look weak and in the case of Battle Boss abilities don’t have the impact they do with the Lancers.

Considering all aspects of the skins, we found that the Lancers where more effective at realising their fantasy. Battle Boss is good but we don’t find it as memorable and interesting. Granted it can be subjective and it’s just our opinion. We simply think the Lancers are better realised. However, we do think that one Lancer is enough.
