League of Legends: Vayne Skins’ Review – StrategyZero
Apr 052012

Vayne, the Night Hunter
Vayne, the Night Hunter

Vayne, the Night Hunter has an interesting and eclectic choice of clothes available. Steampunk aristocrats, contemporary vampire hunters and some other unusual and supernatural options are all possibilities. To hunt monsters you have to find them where they lurk. So, if you need some guidance to cover Vayne’s particular outfits’ selection, read further on this skins’ review.

Vindicator Vayne
Vindicator Vayne Splash Art Vindicator Vayne Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Vayne dressed as a contemporary vampire hunter.
Model: New model for Vayne and her crossbows.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: This piece is quite pedestrian: it simply shows Vayne aiming her arm crossbow. The background is practically absent; except for some light effects that seem to be coming from nowhere. Vayne herself is not particularly well drawn and the use of colours is bland: even the light reflections on her are subdued and uninspiring. Considering the quality of the Chinese splash art, this piece has no place in League of Legends.

Conclusion: Vindicator Vayne provides a modern look for Vayne which doesn’t appear as out of place as one could initially think. Technically, it does change all aspects of Vayne’s look. Even her arm crossbow has a different animation due to its particular design. However, while the concept does suit Vayne it isn’t exactly attractive; the execution could even be considered dull. The overall look of the skin doesn’t effectively deliver the point of a modern vampire hunter. If you do like Vayne’s look you should definitely get it as the price isn’t much of an obstacle. However, some people may not find the look exciting at all.

Aristocrat Vayne
Aristocrat Vayne Splash Art Aristocrat Vayne Model
Category: Regular
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Vayne dressed as a steampunk inspired aristocrat.
Model: New model for Vayne and her back crossbow, new texture for her arm crossbow.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: In this piece Vayne apparently stands on an alley or street. The background is unclear as if a sandstorm is covering it; though it isn’t affecting Vayne. At any rate, the look of the street doesn’t match Vayne’s aristocratic look. It might have been applicable had she been depicted hunting, but she is just posing. Vayne is well drawn with adequate use of colours and subtle but well placed reflections. Overall, not a bad piece that has some obvious inconsistencies.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Aristocrat Vayne has a very distinct look with heavy steampunk inspiration. Vayne’s design is quite exotic, even extravagant, and that may not appeal to everyone. Moreover, her arm crossbow is only re-textured; the model is the same as Classic Vayne. In spite of all of this, the skin provides an interesting look for a very attractive price. It may not be for everyone, but those that do like it shouldn’t miss on Aristocrat Vayne.

Dragonslayer Vayne
Dragonslayer Vayne Splash Art Dragonslayer Vayne Model
Category: Regular
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Vayne dressed in blue armour shaped in the form of a dragon.
Model: New model for Vayne and her crossbows.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: In this piece Vayne dramatically aims her arm crossbow while the head of a dragon comes from behind her back. The rest of the background is minimal: just a stone floor. However, this helps focus attention on the dragon and the fire burning in its mouth. The light emitted by the flames shines all over Vayne and the reflections on her armour are well placed to highlight its design. Vayne herself is quite well drawn; with intricate and detailed clothing. While the focus on the dragon may steal some attention from Vayne, all in all, it’s a pretty good splash art.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Dragonslayer Vayne is a skin with a conventional concept and an atypical execution: instead of opting for heavy dragon-shaped armour Vayne wears light dragon-inspired armour; maybe too light. The appeal of this unusual execution is what will actually decide if the skin is worthy of a purchase. The actual execution is quite good: not only does her helmet and back crossbow match as dragon heads but her boots and plates also evoke a dragon look.
Regardless, the colour scheme seems a bit off as it’s easy to imagine red, black or brown dragons but blue dragons are rather rare. Therefore, if you, on the one hand, think that Vayne is showing too much skin for a blue dragon warrior you’ll probably have some justified qualms about getting Dragonslayer Vayne. On the other hand, if you think that light armour is better suited for a crossbow wielder and have no issues with her lack of frontal protection you should consider getting Dragonslayer Vayne.

Heartseeker Vayne
Heartseeker Vayne Splash Art Heartseeker Vayne Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Vayne dressed in Cupid-styled clothes for Valentine’s Day.
Model: New model for Vayne and her crossbows.
Particles: New small bolts from her arm crossbow for her auto-attack. New big bolts from her back crossbow for Condemn and auto-attack during Final Hour. New hearts effect when using Tumble.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: This splash art shows that a complex and rich background doesn’t necessarily detract from the champion depicted. The different focus applied to the background flowers clearly marks them as the frame of the action. While Vayne does share the picture with Dr. Mundo, he is inactive and laying on the floor with one of Vayne bolts. This bolt marks Vayne’s presence on him and moves the attention back to her. Vayne enjoys a high quality portrayal with great use of lighting and colours to enhance the appearance of the different materials that make her clothes. Moreover, the piece also tells a little and fun story while providing a good display of Vayne’s look. In summary, an excellent splash art and one of the best in League of Legends.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Some skins throw realism out of the window and concentrate on delivering a funny concept; Heartseeker Vayne is one such skin. The execution is quite good, with lots of details and high quantity of hearts in display. Moreover, her new bolts and Tumble hearts push even further the heart theme. It’s a real pity then that Vayne’s appearance doesn’t resemble the style depicted in the splash art that well; especially considering the wonderful and superior look portrayed in the splash art.
In the end, the decision of whether Heartseeker Vayne is worth purchasing lays only in how much you like the actual execution of her Valentine style. If you like her real, in-game Valentine Day look then you’ll be getting a skin that is a step above others in quality. If you think that the concept is too much of a stretch or that the execution falters in comparison to the promise made by the splash art, then no amount of new particles will make Heartseeker Vayne any more acceptable and you may want to pass on it.

SKT T1 Vayne
SKT T1 Vayne Splash Art SKT T1 Vayne Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Vayne as a stylish, modern arbalester.
Model: New model for Vayne and her crossbows.
Particles: New small bolts from her arm crossbow for her auto-attack. New big bolts from her back crossbow for Condemn and auto-attack during Final Hour.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: Following on the footsteps laid before, the splash art is content with depicting the team of champions at an arena among bright lights and confetti. As dynamic as the portrayal is it also feels like it’s treading the same ground. It also doesn’t help matters that the background is so diffuse and that the setting seems empty.
That considered the champions do look good. Each depiction speaks about them though not always in the right way. Specifically, Jax appears agile and ready for a fight, Lee Sin concentrated and physically apt while Zed seems sneaky and lethal. The ladies though don’t shine as much: Zyra simply lashes forward with her classic tendrils and Vayne looks unexpectedly light-hearted and enticing.
In a way, it seems that the splash art followed the traditional path: powerful guys flanked by sexy girls. To be fair, the portrayals are nice with vibrant shading and great variety of colour. Besides, for better or for worse, all the champions look attractive in some way. Therefore, we can say that it’s a piece with a disappointing background and a good portrayal that doesn’t always display the best that each champion can offer.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: The first thing that stands out when looking at SKT T1 Vayne is her new yellow crossbows with a distinct arrow design. They add a lot of personality to the skin and make a good match for her sunglasses; though the bright yellow stands out too much. The clothing though is a bit of a mixed bag as it’s both casual and personalized with multiple pads. It seems to be in the middle between a professional hunter and a normal pedestrian. Additionally, while it’s not a big issue, the sweater around her waist feels like unnecessary baggage. All in all, it’s a modern styling for Vayne that has good looks and has no problems in sacrificing some functionality in that pursuit.

Arclight Vayne
 Splash Art Arclight Vayne Model
Category: Regular
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Vayne as a hunter of light.
Model: New model for Vayne and her crossbows.
Particles: New particles for her abilities, auto-attack and critical hits.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for Final Hour and recall.
Splash Art: Blasting horrors to oblivion Vayne’s Arclight power is no match for the surrounding darkness. As a setup it’s a good start but the execution doesn’t always make the most of it. Firstly, the background is extremely diffuse and, besides some buildings, nothing is visible; except from monstrous limbs grasping at Vayne. A more developed context would’ve enhanced the portrayal; she could’ve been protecting innocents, for instance.
Vayne’s portrayal is quite good with great use of colour and contrast. The cloth and metal appear a tad sketchy but they are also detailed with multiple fold and dents; respectively. The use of light and shadow on her hair and skin adds to her supernatural depiction so that she appears distant, maybe aloof, powerful but also human.
Strangely, her big crossbow, on her back, is quite blurry despite being quite near her. This use depth of field doesn’t make much sense; like her coattails being almost an outline.
In the whole, this splash art offers an attractive portrayal with a fitting but underdeveloped setting.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: While straightforward and, perhaps, even too direct in its implementation Arclight Vayne is an attractive skin with a fine concept behind it. The model is good but nothing remarkable: essentially, it’s Vayne wearing light, golden armour. The clothes merely cover her and the armour’s design, most noticeable in her boots, is simplistic and childish. It lacks elaboration for a skin that is supposed to be supernatural and angelic. The designs and decoration appear plain and only the crossbows resemblance to wings reveals something akin to the theme.
Her face with empty eyes and golden markings adds a touch of inhuman divinity to Vayne. Her simple but practical hair and hairpins as well but that’s all in the skin that really seems magical. Additionally, she could’ve worn a golden visor attached to the hairpins on the side of her face while her armour looked more advanced with a clearly magical core. Truth be told, her outfit is a disappointment of plain tones and crude lines. Sadly, her model looks like a prototype that is unable to reach the objective set by the splash art.
Fortunately, the particles add some necessary elaboration to the theme; though, their clearly monochrome aspect can feel monotonous. They manage to add a different feel to her actions but they aren’t elaborate enough to seem more than re-colours and, after a while, they can feel dull. Her new recall manages to convey the theme a bit but the wings from the crossbow feel like a way to re-use assets. Bright, shining angelic wings coming from her actual back is what she should’ve displayed.
In the end, Arclight Vayne is an acceptable skin with an execution that lets down. The concept is interesting but most of its potential is left unexploited. For fans of Vayne it’s a different skin that is interesting but also lacking.

Soulstealer Vayne
 Splash Art Model
Category: Promotional (forge 10 gemstones or reroll skin shards and permanents in Hextech Crafting)
Price: Not Applicable
Concept: Vayne as a huntress of spirits.
Model: New model for Vayne and her crossbows.
Particles: New particles for her abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for her abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Splash Art: A crypt opened at night, stone engravings decorate the resting piece but time has left its footprint: even a big mushroom is growing. The skulls carved on the rock are the sole witnesses to the glowing energy brought upon the grave by the spirit thief. The context is rather good but the setting tends to suggest more than show. The background consists of a series of sparsely visible elements that added together manage to produce an environment but are often difficult to notice and seem relegated despite their relevance.
Vayne does receive centre stage as she should. The first thing that strikes from her portrayal is the craftsmanship of the lighting. Not only do colours reveal different hues depending on whether the moonlight or the supernatural energy shines on them but the elaborate shading and precise outline allows for a meticulous depiction. The pose is also quite good as it allows a good view of Vayne while being dynamic and also referencing how she tumbles. The swirls of magical energy coming from her fascinating ethereal hands and hand crossbow are a good touch when used with moderation. However, as the swirls and energy extend, somehow, to each side it actually occludes the background more than add to the eerie feel of the proceedings.
The result is a rather spectacular portrayal that is a bit too voracious in its display of magic which ends up hiding the setting more than it should. That’s particularly notable as the background adds a lot of context to Vayne’s soul stealing. There’s also the fact that the background struggles to be relevant and always stays behind Vayne’s imposing depiction. In spite of these problems this is a commendable splash art that has enough ambition to go beyond usual to make the champion relevant and special. It needs some polish in a few areas to truly be one of League of Legends’ best splash arts but the portrayal of Vayne is certainly one of the best there is.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Rather than innovating on what already works Soulstealer Vayne gives the Night Hunter a supernatural layer of style on top of her core identity. The new model harkens back to Arclight with its golden decorations and crossbows; almost feeling like a fixed version. The appearance is different yet unable to find harmony between the darker, leather clothing and the bright golden weapons. They seem like disparate areas of the skin with each going its own way without care or any integration with the rest.
The particles stand somewhat in the middle but closer to the golden crossbows. At their best, the eerie, transparent, glowing bolts are a good fit. The mystic, smoke-like trail of Tumble and Final Hour make for the best spectacle. The hit effect on auto-attacks and Condemn as well as the detonation of Silver Botls is a strange effect that displays dark petals but the distinct swirls that accompany the explosions are interesting. The different aspect of Night Hunter’s passive bonus and stacks of Silver Bolts are quiet but attractive changes that cement the skin’s identity. The fact that the hand crossbow and both hands don’t look ethereal and supernatural as in the splash art, or at least made to glow with the abilities, is a missed opportunity.
The new sounds, relying on soft, haunting laments are a good match for the slightly modified classic sounds. These sound more ethereal with softer effects but still familiar. The recall is the clearest display of supernatural power with three bolts that are absorbed while Vayne floats to propel her beyond the veil of this reality. The problem is that the transition isn’t smooth enough and she seems stuck on the ground at the end.
All things considered, Soulstealer Vayne isn’t really a skin that delivers what her name suggests. It does have a proper supernatural feel that is appealing and is well communicated. There’s much that is familiar though and the modifications go only as far as the surface. Nevertheless, the result is attractive so it’s a skin worth recommending for fans of Vayne and hextech crafting. For what it offers, it’s an option on par with the most interesting 975 RP skins.

PROJECT: Vayne
PROJECT: Vayne Splash Art PROJECT: Vayne Model
Category: Legendary
Price: 1820 RP
Concept: Vayne as a cyborg huntress.
Model: New model for Vayne and her crossbows plus new glow for her crossbows and transparent cape. New animated visor when enemies are nearby.
Particles: New particles for her abilities, auto-attack, high-speed run, death, joke, dance and recall; including a HUD mask overlay for Final Hour.
Animations: New animations for her abilities, auto-attack, standing idle, walk, high-speed run, death, recall and emotes.
Sounds: New sounds for her abilities, auto-attack, high-speed run and recall plus new voice-over; which becomes more robotic by levelling up. New quotes when taunting certain champions, idle, death, recall, respawn, buying certain items and killing champions.
Splash Art: Tumbling on the wet streets bathed in blue neon Vayne is ready to retaliate. The buildings seem metallic and lights are everywhere to attract pedestrians but everything is diffuse. Some places could be shops but there’s nothing clear about the setting. The suggestions given by what little can be gathered from the background give an apt cyberpunk feel. However, that’s as far as the context goes as it’s not even clear who or what Vayne is up against; not even as a reflection on her visor.
Vayne slides on the floor with subtle sparks where her fingertips touch the pavement and a spray of water all around. The water looks fantastic. Even though it isn’t actually photorealistic the highlighted borders against transparent bodies give the splashes an artificial, hi-tech feel that suits the piece; as if they were part of Vayne’s camouflage. In that regard her leg seems to be materializing with a fine electric feel that is quite attractive and misleading: in-game there’s only a simple blue transparency added. While the stance is quite dashing it also prevents a good view at Vayne’s body. Additionally, the torso is mostly occluded so it’s the limbs and head that manage to communicate the futuristic style. The arms do look a bit sketchy as well as the hair but the visor looks fantastic with attractive reflections and a subtle, realistic light added to Vayne’s face that accentuates how believable her features are. The semi-transparent glow of the crossbows is quite nice to but in-game they are quite solid.
All added together, the background provides the right cyberpunk feel for the piece. Vayne’s portrayal is also quite interesting and pleasing albeit not perfect. Regardless, the issues never take away the appeal of the depiction. The portrayal should be less uneven and the context more developed. Still, it has to be admitted that it’s a good presentation card for a legendary skin.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: The template from which PROJECT: Vayne is made of isn’t really revolutionary. In fact, it follows the familiar design of a cybernetically enhanced body and a pale human face closely. Add some light-coloured hair to further the air of artifice and there’s really nothing surprising about it. Metal plates all over the body can be armour or other augmentations, prosthetic arms are the clear synthetic touch and the cyborg eye only furthers the theme. For a markswoman the improvements do seem sensible. The appearance is rather unassuming with a quiet colour palette that makes use of dark blues and greys for a look that can even look dull. The ponytail adds some style but the base of the model doesn’t do much to stand out.
It has to be admitted, though, that the skin makes an effort in differentiating Vayne from other cyborgs. The translucent cape is a good touch to add a holographic touch to the model. It’s a subtle effect but classy and with a nice design that is visible when her back is turned. Her crossbows also represent the hi-tech future effectively; the faint glows are an elegant highlight. The arm crossbow has a lean and practical design. This makes it a plausible weapon while also looking distinctly advanced. The large crossbow on her back gives the impression of a cannon. When armed it expands to the sides reinforcing the idea of great power concentrated into a controlled device. On top of that we have a stylish holographic mask that appears whenever an enemy is nearby. It’s an addition that could’ve been toggleable yet also has a reasonable condition for its appearance. With its attractive design it’s a good touch of technology.
Particles have a specific design but not as rigid as in other skins of the same line. They mostly revolve around geometric shapes, mostly rectangular, which give a cohesive style without being too repetitive. Still, there’s a certain degree of homogeneity. The fact that Vayne is mostly auto-attack based doesn’t help matters; though it’s something that could’ve been worked around. The rectangular, almost pixellated, explosions of auto-attacks and their sharp, silvery bolts are attractive. They are the base for the modifications added by Tumble, Condemn and Final Hour. In all cases, the abilities add a bigger explosion or larger bolts as necessary but the basis is the same as the auto-attacks. While it’s understandable there’s simply too little variation to the point that most attacks look and even feel the same. There are a few things of note, though. Tumble’s brief holographic images are nice even if subtle. Silver Bolts mostly follows the general design but the lines of text that appear with two stacks are a nice digital cue. Night Hunter’s rectangles are rather timid despite the animation and while they follow the geometric style they are too easily neglected. The mark around Vayne’s feet in Final Hour fares better than Night Hunter as it’s bigger and also shows animated lines; though it can seem a shy addition. What does stand out is the glow added to the crossbows when Tumble, Condemn and, especially, Final Hour are used. The ultimate also has the advantage of referencing the HUD over the crossbow with that onscreen which is a fantastic addition that makes it all the more impressive. Sadly, when Tumbling during Final Hour Vayne doesn’t seem to receive a special glow to mark the advanced stealth capabilities she should have. Instead it’s a simple blue transparency that seems underdeveloped; it does let the holographic additions stand out, at least.
Sounds have two sides. Auto-attacks have a low thump which doesn’t feel very advanced and, frankly, surprises by how little they fit the holographic visuals. Tumble only adds an echo and the detonation of Silver Bolts a twang but the feel is identical. The faint distortion at the beginning of Tumble is actually nice but too quiet. Condemn is more interesting with a distinct distortion; emphasised when a target hits a wall. Final Hour’s hum is a good even if simple touch. The auto-attacks have a nice but shy distortion added underneath that gives them a steady holographic feel. It’s subtle, though, but noticeable and necessary to add aural power to the ultimate.
Animations are all different yet also familiar. That may be because they are variations on the classic versions. They have a more dashing, cartoony design that makes them more dynamic and appealing without being an exaggeration. Auto-attacks, reasonably, are quite nice with Vayne waving her arm due to the power of the attacks. That’s more effective when Final Hour is active because with normal auto-attacks the effect is more like she needs to manually propel bolts; which is funny and not in the best of ways. Other animations seem untouched, like walking, and while it’s understandable more focus on the robotic feel of prosthetics could’ve added much needed personality to the animations. One area that needs no help in standing out is the new high speed run animation; mainly used in homeguard. Vayne riding her futuristic motorcycle is a wonderful sight which all skins with an associated vehicle should imitate. Her recall also displays her bike and while it’s all for show it’s a nice one seeing how relevant her vehicle really is. Her new joke also hints at her bike which reinforces it as a relevant element in the skin. The dance is rather nice too with colours and music to accompany Vayne’s dexterity.
On the whole, PROJECT: Vayne isn’t a skin without faults but it’s also an accomplished skin that adds significant and attractive elements to develop its synthetic identity and make it more attractive and distinct. They are the saving grace of the skin and what contribute the most to making the skin stand out in the vast array of PROJECT members. It’s a skin with personality and an effective adaptation of its theme. If its flaws could be ironed out we would be in the face of excellence. Nonetheless, PROJECT: Vayne is still a great option for fans of night and cyber hunters alike.

Firecracker Vayne
Firecracker Vayne Splash Art Firecracker Vayne Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Vayne as a fireworks-based arbalester.
Model: New model for Vayne and her crossbows.
Particles: New particles for her abilities, auto-attack, critical hits and recall.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for her abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Splash Art: Blurry city, blurry fireworks and a blurry rooftop with several pigs and a fireworks enthusiast who doesn’t want any meddling with her explosions. While the context makes sense the setting is explicitly relegated by the blur. The problem is that there are things to appreciate which are prevented from being as enjoyable as they could be, bright fireworks and cameos in particular.
Vayne sits at the edge of the rooftop which is a clearly stylised way of showing how cool she is with danger. There are even pigs there which don’t seem to fear heights or respect gravity; like those closest to the foreground. The stance allows a good view of her look but it also strikes as a mere pose to show off. There’s no interaction with the background despite the potential for it. Lines are clear, colours varied but reflections are a bit dull: gold looks dim like brass. The shading is soft and appealing which, added to the softness of the colour palette makes Vayne look delicate and dignified. Both crossbows appear too wide, dominating her silhouette and showing a design that doesn’t really represent the in-game look well. While Vayne is more detailed and elaborately depicted than in three dimensions there’s a degree of similarity. With the crossbows it seems like that’s not a concern.
Overall, this is a splash art with a sensible scene and an appealing portrayal. There’s no interaction between Vayne and the relevant context she’s in, which is a wasted opportunity, and the portrayal isn’t as faithful to the three-dimensional counterpart as it should be. Regardless, it’s a piece with appeal which represents well enough the champion’s theme.

Conclusion: Firecracker Vayne is to welcome the Lunar New Year and exemplify it. There’s no need to wonder which animal sign corresponds to the New Year as the crossbows are a clear and cheesy indication of such. They are so evident, so in the face, that it makes the model less noble looking than all the gold indicates. There’s an aristocratic or royal style given by the combination of red and gold and there’s also an evident stylisation as tattoos, hairstyle and prominent cleavage show. The shoes look weird as if they were simple platforms to stand on; which isn’t what the splash art indicates. It’s these many imprecisions added up which make the model appear less dignified and appealing that in can be. In other words, Vayne looks like a caricature.
Particles are mainly based on fireworks as auto-attacks in all their variations show. With Final Hour active they are more colourful and interesting because normal auto-attacks tend to look too homogeneous: all gold. Still, bolts tend to look somewhat simple. On abilities, Condem’s stun is the only significant use of fireworks; when not stunning the ability is disappointing. The new smoke for Tumble and new decals for Silver Bolts and Final Hour are one of the most distinct features along the critical hits indicator.
Sounds have faint, emphatically so, firework contributions. Condem’s stun is the only clear use of fireworks; recall aside. Auto-attacks, in all varieties, are dominated by the mechanical workings of the crossbows while abilities retain their classic audio as their distinct sound. Truth be told, the aural side of fireworks is barely present.
The new recall has some significance as there are fireworks and martial arts. It’s not the best representation of either, though. It strikes as something done without much thought. It works, it’s relevant but generic and hardly helps build the identity of the skin.
All things considered, Firecracker Vayne is a nice albeit cartoony take on the Night Hunter. Perhaps the cute pig head in Final Hour’s decal is the most eloquent descriptor of the approach taken. The skin ends up being fun, appealing but certainly full of untapped potential; either by being more serious or playful. The celebratory style is weak and the fireworks aren’t as florid and eye-catching as expected. The result has a bit of both and has its charm but it’s a charm that pales in comparison that what the skin could offer.

Category: Promotional
Price: 1000 Lunar Revel Tokens
Concept: Vayne as a fireworks-based arbalester.
Model: New model for Vayne and her crossbows plus new golden glow and sparks.
Particles: New particles for her abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for her abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Splash Art: Being an evident modified version of the base Firecracker Vayne splash art much of what’s been said still applies. The setting is changed with floating lanterns instead of fireworks in the night sky which gives a surreal tone to the piece. The city is further concealed under the red haze which ends up limiting the scene to the rooftop. There, all remains identical except for some colour changes applied to Vayne.
What’s most notorious about her look when compared to the in-game version is how dim and weak the colours are. Gold looks like copper while in-game it appears practically yellow. None of the bright colours seen in three dimensions are there, only darker tones of them.
All in all, this modified version of Firecracker Vayne’s splash art seems like the lesser of the two. The surreal touch of the lanterns is interesting but without meaning. The rest of the piece suffers from changes which don’t keep the style of the original, despite its flaws. The result even struggles as a faithful representation of the three-dimensional counterpart but gives a broad idea of what’s in store.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Firecracker Vayne Prestige Edition shows brighter colours than the base which make it rather eye-catching but the bluish cape, dress, gloves and hair are a poor choice to make a nice contrast, unlike the base’s red. The result is a skin that appears all bright, which added to the golden glow of the model, makes it rather homogenous. Perhaps instead of a light blue other tones of red and gold could’ve been use which would also keep the colour scheme consistent.
Particles show glittering gold for impacts and Night Hunter. Tumble’s smoke is re-coloured bluish and there’re new decals for Silver Bolts and Final Hour which don’t have the same personality as those seen in the base skin. The former is simply a variation with less gold while the latter is more generic and simpler. They are nice though but, like the model, less distinct.
Sounds and recall are identical so there’s nothing to say about them.
Overall, Firecracker Vayne Prestige Edition is a skin that adds little and while what’s added is different it doesn’t better define the skin’s identity. There are new features, sure, but they are few and not really meaningful. Given the actual price, there’s nothing here for fans of the Night Hunter or Firecracker Vayne.

Conclusion

Vayne’s wardrobe is the very definition of diverse. Fortunately, that doesn’t apply to quality as all of her skins are quite good. Depending on what you are after, different skins will appeal to you. If you want a skin that is above usual offerings Heartseeker Vayne delivers if you can stomach the infusion of hearts.

For something more traditional Dragonslayer Vayne and Aristocrat Vayne are available; however, both have their share of peculiarities. Arclight Vayne is a skin with a nice theme but the execution doesn’t make the most of it; so it’s just passable.

The hextech crafting exclusive Soulstealer Vayne is a skin that fans of the Night Hunter and crafting would like. It doesn’t really do justice to its name but it’s an attractive, supernatural-based skin with some really good touches. In spite of the changes being superficial they are effective in adding the haunting feel they intend to. For an expense equal to a 975 RP skin it’s well worth considering.

In essence, Vayne’s has quality skins on offer in the technical aspect; it’s actually the concepts and executions that may not appeal to everybody. Therefore, when shopping for clothes for Vayne, it’s more a matter of liking the execution of the skin and ignoring the splash arts’ allusions.

The legendary option comes by the synthetic hand of PROJECT: Vayne. While the skin suffers from insipid designs in all areas it compensates with unique and appealing additions that reinforce the distinct identity of this cybernetic hunter. With so many great touches contributing to make the skin stand out it’s no wonder that it does impress in many ways. It’s not a perfect skin but it could be. Nevertheless, there’re a lot of great features in PROJECT: Vayne.

Firecracker Vayne is a skin that has appeal but also a noticeable untapped potential. Weak in both eastern ceremony and fireworks’ impact what is present shows a personality which isn’t as well developed as it could be. While the skin can be charming it also shows that it could’ve been much more elaborate and interesting. Firecracker Vayne Prestige Edition adds a few different features but they are really few and certainly not distinct. Considering the price and what’s on offer, there’s nothing worthwhile.

  1. Aristocrat vayne is a reference to bayonneta ^o^ atleast the look and hairstyle is undeniable 😉

    • Well, Bayonetta was released before Vayne and her aristocratic style so it’s a possibility. Still, we only see a passing similarity. For instance, Bayonetta seems based on fantasy while Aristocrat Vayne on steampunk. It could be a reference anyway but we don’t see it clearly.

  2. Are you gonna review the skt t1 skins?

  3. Can u review the SKT T1 skins?

  4. If you could, I would appreciate it if you could review them before the sale expires 😛

    Thx

  5. Hi Zero,

I really love your reviews. They’ve helped me make several good purchases 🙂

Can you give me an estimate on when you think Aristocrat Vayne will next go on sale?

    Kind regards,
    Stranger

    • Thanks, glad that you find them useful.

Airstocrat Vayne was last discounted at the beginning of December. This means that before the year ends it should go on sale. Still, there’s nothing certain.

  6. Hi Zero,
Can you pls tell me what skin is better for vayne? I mean from heartseeker and dragonslayer. I like both but i can’t decide. Pls answer me. Nice site full of informations TY Zero. Good luck 🙂

    • Thanks for the kind words.

It depends on what you are looking for to decide between Heartseeker and Dragonslayer. Heartseeker is a funny skin with a style that is a bit out of place in fantasy but with a good amount of changes. Dragonslayer fits better in a fantasy world but is highly stylized and doesn’t go beyond model changes.

Thus, there are two important factors to consider: the amount of changes you look for in a skin and the concept behind it. Taking both into account plus your personal preference you have elements to decide what skin is more appealing to you.

Remember that in the end it should be a skin you enjoy. There’s no point in buying something that won’t see use just because it’s considered good. Also, don’t forget about sales: they help save quite a bit of money but a lot of patience is necessary.

      • Thank you. I think i will buy Heartseeker Vayne cause i read in your reviews it has got more changes and i love that cuttenes. Keep writing userful informations. I have a question. Can u make a Vi Skin s Review. Ty Guys

  7. Make the review for arclight! 😀

  8. Hey bro, can you please do a review of Archlight Vayne? I’m inclined to buy the skin however, I don’t know if it’s worth it or not.

    • No problem.

Arclight Vayne is a skin that lands in the middle: it has some nice additions but they aren’t very well developed. We’d recommend it only if you really like it or are a big fan of Vayne. If not, then there are other skins for Vayne or, hopefully, she should receive one that’s really worthwhile.

  9. Hi Zero,

First of all, thanks for your great reviews. I’ve used them a lot to decide whether to buy a skin and which one to buy. I was just wondering if you are planning on reviewing the new Arclight Vayne Skin any time soon?

    • Not at all.

The review is ready and the conclusion is that the skin isn’t as good as it should; despite an attractive concept. Hopefully her next skin will be implemented as the concept deserves.

  10. The review for the Arclight Vayne skin is well done, but you forgot to mention the new sound for her ultimate. I was disappointed it didn’t feature new sounds for the rest of her abilities, but I overall like the skin. Would have been much better if it featured the traits you mentioned in the review, but I guess perfection can’t always be achieved.

    • Thanks for the information.

Truth be told, Arclight Vayne is far from perfection to the point that it’s merely average. The skin really looks like a prototype of a final product. The basics are covered but there’s much that can and should be improved.

  11. Hey zero, I love your reviews they are really awesome. I was just wondering if I should get Arclight Vayne? I already have aristocrat but the splash art for Arclight just looks so cool. But the only problem is everyone is saying its a really bad skin and not worth the RP. Should I just keep with my aristocrat? Thanks

    • We’d say you should. If Arclight Vayne were on sale then we understand the temptation but it’s really an underwhelming skin. The model is underdeveloped, the particles appear like re-colours and there’s little in the way of sounds. As surprising as it is, the Arclight theme was wasted on Vayne because the implementation wasn’t up the expected standards.

We’d recommend to wait for a new skin that finally does something different with Vayne. If you’d like some variety then consider some of the others skins. At its worst, wait for a sale on Arclight and even so we think that the other skins can be more satisfying.

  12. Hello!

I want to start off by saying (you probably get this all the time >_<) that I appreciate your skin reviews. They have helped me sort out if and how to spend my RP and lets me see things from a new perspective sometimes.

I'm writing this post because I'm having some trouble choosing between Dragonslayer Vayne and Aristocrat Vayne. Especially now that I've seen the upcoming chroma pack for her Dragonslayer skin. So, I was wondering what you thought about the two skins and if you have a preference.

    • Glad that you find the reviews useful. It’s our main objective so it’s always nice to know that we aren’t too far off target.

We prefer Aristocrat because its a re-model just like Dragonslayer but almost at half its price. However, as you mention, the chroma pack changes things a bit as it allows for an additional degree of customization. Sadly that would come at an extra cost and while the chromas seem good they are not particuarly inventive.

We’d say that if you like the idea of having a skin with multiple optional colours then Dragonslayer plus the chroma pack is the way to go. It’s an expensive option but also the richest in terms of choice. Aristocrat is the modest alternative and while its offering is specific it’s also much cheaper in comparison and has its own appeal.

In the end, it depends on which concept you prefer and how much you are willing to spend. Neither is a bad skin but if we add price to the mix then the scales are tipped towards Aristocat’s favour. If we instead look at which skin offers the most possibitlities then Dragonslayer has an advantage.

      • Thank you for you’re feedback! I think I’m going to save my pennies and go for the Dragonslayer Vayne skin (and then maybe save some more of my pennies and get the chroma pack).

        • Not at all, you may even want to wait for a sale so that you can save some RP when getting Dragonslayer. That RP can be used to pay for most of the chroma pack. Dragonslayer Vayne was last on sale at the end of November 2014 so it should be discounted again in the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, some skins take a good while to get to a sale but patience has its reward.

  13. Hi Zero,

You may not remember me but I was the guy asking about the Mecha Kha’Zix skin a month. With the Lunar Revel skin shop, I decided to go on a skin buying spree (picked up Sewn Chaos Ori[had to pick it up based on your review], Dragon Trainer Lulu and Apocalypse Brand). I have just enough RP for a discounted 975 skin and I’m having trouble deciding on who to pick. My options are:

    Arclight Vayne (50% off)
    Dragonslayer Vayne (Upcoming Feb. Sale)

I was wondering in your opinion which is the best option or even if I should spend the RP on it.

    Thanks,

    Drew

    • Vayne is the case of a champion were the best skins aren’t the most traditional ones. For something that suits her Dragonslayer is a good option but it’s only a re-model at 975 RP. If you want more than just a change of polygons then you either have to consider Heartseeker or Arclight. The former, which may appear during Valentine’s Day, has a heart-based theme that may not suit everyone’s tastes. The latter is a letdown. It’s a skin with a concept brimming with potential that is largely squandered by the execution. The particles are fine but the model looks like a prototype.

In the end, there isn’t an easy answer with regards to Vayne. If you are fine with paying so much for a re-model then Dragonslayer is good for what it offers but it doesn’t offer much. Arclight has more to give but the model is something that can’t be explained. Heartseeker should eventually appear but shooting hearts is not for everybody. Perhaps waiting for Aristocrat would be a safer option. It’s cheap and the style fits her as an extravagant, steampunk huntress.

  14. Hey there Zero! Do you guys rate the chroma packs? I read your comments and you gave dragonslayer a 3 based on the blue, but now they have red, green and sivler! They look good but I dont know if I should buy them just for the colour change… What do you think?

    • We aren’t very sure about chroma packs, especially those that require a skin. If you already own Dragonslayer it could add variety but it’s only a change of colour. We’d say that unless you specifically play a lot of Dragonslayer Vayne then the chroma pack isn’t worth it. It’s too limited and modest an offering. In fact, for the price, you may be better off buying a skin or even two if on sale. We think it’s a niche product and so only really appealing for those that are looking for what it offers: a change of colours for a skin you have to previously buy.

  15. So, Zero, what do you think of the second upcoming Hextech Crafting-exclusive skin – Soulstealer Vayne? I think it looks lovely, though I am definitely not a fan of it being crafting-exclusive. Getting ten rare gems requires massive amounts of luck or money, or both. They said gems will probably become obtainable in some way in the future, but I assume it will be for RP… Which is frankly ridiculous, since it is basically buying a skin with a twist. It would be absolutely PERFECT if they tied gem earning to some kind of achievements, like winning X number of games on Y map. Or playing a certain number of games as a marksman, for example.
    On a side note, here’s a shot of in-game Muse Sona: http://i.imgur.com/MtEAEtk.png
I still look forward to a revamp of Sona’s older skin reviews, as they still clearly stand out as extremely brief.

  16. Hi Zero!
I would like to star off by saying thanks for all your great reviews! They have helped me buy certain skins in the past. Just out of curiosity, what is your opinion on Soulstealer Vayne? Honestly, though it is really cool, for the time and/or money invested in it, it seems kind of lacking, especially considering it doesn’t gave any new emotes or voice-overs. Thanks!

    ~Sciraen

    • Not at all, we are glad that they are useful.

Soulstealer Vayne looks like a nice skin but nothing groundbreaking. It certainly isn’t something to go out of one’s mind. It’s good and seems a nice option which offers about as much as a 975 RP skin. We wouldn’t recommend worrying about it though. It’s something nice if it comes but the crafting requirments are a steep obstacle to overcome.

      • Fcking riot. Vayne already have a lot of skins and they must make good skin for her…

        • It’s true that Vayne has quite a few skins but none that are really elaborate and serious like Soulstealer. That doesn’t change the fact that there are other champions that have many less skins are would welcome new skins; not to say that they need them. It could be a matter of popularity and which champion sells more and better skins. At any rate, the conditions put on acquiring Soulstealer Vayne seem difficult to meet.

  17. I Think Dragon Slayer Vayne needs to be 4 Star not because he didnt have particles but base in her look he loon like bad ass

    • While we agree that Dragonslayer Vayne’s model is quite good at the 975 RP tier more than a model change is expected. It’s still a good skin but outdated for the requirements of the tier it belongs to. If additional changes aren’t added to the skin then the price should adjusted down. Currently, much more is possible at that price tier.

  18. DragonSlayer Vayne or Arclight Vayne? Which one should i buy? Thanks

    • Dragonslayer is more modest as it’s only a re-model but it’s well done. Arclight’s model looks like a prototype; rough and even unfinished. The new particles are nice but they can feel conventional at times; like a simple change of colour. Overall, Dragonslayer is more effective at communicating its message but it’s also simpler. Arclight offers more but the quality of each feature is questionable.

It can be a matter of choice in the end: an outdated skin versus a skin with flaws in the execution. Both have problems but also appealing concepts. The best option would be to buy the one you like the most. Try to wait for a sale if possible. There are problems in either case so the reduced price will help.

      • I buy Dragonslayer Vayne Yesterday its sale <3

        • Hope you enjoy the skin.

You may want to pay attention for chroma’s IP sales because Dragonslayer Vayne has a few available. If you like some of them, with IP, the cost becomes much easier to manage. There’s a skin chroma review if you need some guidance on which to pick.

  19. Not all your Vayne skins

  20. Hey there Zero, which one will you recommend? Arclight Vayne or Rocket Girl Tristana? Both are gonna be on sale XD.

Honestly though, I’ve been eyeing on Arclight Vayne for a long time but after reading your review & checking out its spotlight I feel discouraged :/.

Rocket Girl Trist on the other hand looks really nice with all the sound effects & particles. I usually rate a skin based on 4 features. Looks, Value, Effects & Recall XD.

If I compare both skins with those 4 features, of course Arclight will have the advantage. But still I need to hear your opinion to set up my mind. I hope u can give honest recommendation 🙂

    Thanks in advance

    • We would have to recommend Rocket Girl Tristana. The visual upgrade means that the rockets and explosions aren’t as impressive as they used to be with regards to Classic Tristana’s particles; which improved a lot. However, it’s still a charming and appealing skin.

On the other hand, Arclight Vayne has a model that looks like a prototype and there’s no way around it. The golden particles are nice albeit somewhat simple in their design; still attractive though. At any rate, it might be better to get Soulstealer Vayne or look at some of her other re-models. Until a new skin is released that’s all she has available.

If you consider Soulstealer we recommend to try to spend nothing on hextech crafting because its random nature can consume vast amounts of money.

Back to the skins, Rocket Girl Tristana was and still is a very nice skin. The visual upgrade reduced the distance with Classic but that hasn’t removed its appeal. Arclight Vayne has evident problems and it’s surprising to see a skin released in such a state.

  21. Hey Zero! I just notice that the Vindicator Vayne splash art review is outdated compared to what’s the current client. And another thing, considering that I play both Vayne and Annie well, what should I get: Soulstealer or the Hextech skin? thanks!!

    • We have over a hundres splash arts to update so it’ll take a while. We are prioritising new content also so it’ll be a progressive advance towards completion. Sorry for the inconvenience.

With regards to Soulstealer Vayne versus Hextech Annie we have to admit that both skins are quite good. If you can manage to craft them without spending a dime then it’s a matter of which one you like the most to craft first.

We can say that we find Hextech Annie more visually attractive with the new design for the flames and the fitting steampunk adaptation. Soulstealer Vayne is more traditional but also appealing. However, it doesn’t have great visual displays as it often happens with auto-attack focused champions.

That said, you should get the one you like the most considering the champion you enjoy playing more. Neither is a bad skin so you won’t regret getting them. Besides, you can always craft the other one. As always, try not to spend money on hextech crafting because its random nature is designed as gambling. You know how it is: the house always wins.

  22. Hi Zero,
Just wanted to see what you thought of the new PROJECT: Vayne skin. I think they really overachieved with that one.
    Thanks!

    • We would say that they are actually delivering on the legendary label. PROJECT: Vayne has features that really wouldn’t fit cheaper skins and that transform the champion; at least, in style. We like what we’ve seen but we need to take a closer look to find all the nook and crannies in the implemenation.

  23. Heartseeker vayne isnt legacy

    • We just checked in the store and we are afraid it is. If we recall correctly, it was made legacy as all other Valentine day skins as event skins for the 14th of February.

  24. Hey Zero. Which in your opinion is better: Project or Soulstealer. I had the wonderful opurtunity to get Soulstealer from a shard. I’ll admit, the rarity of this skin is pleasing but Project Vayne looks insanely cool with all the new voice lines. But I like Soulstealer’s hair better tbh. Your thoughts?

    • Both are great skins but PROJECT: Vayne, being a legendary, does offer more than Soulstealer. Still, if you like Vayne, Soulstealer is a great skin and definitely worth getting. Given the access to each skin, being able to get Soulstealer is not something as straighforward as opening the wallet. PROJECT will be there waiting in the store for whenever you want to buy it.

If you like and play Vayne enough you may consider getting one skin now and another later. The question is if you only want one skin. In this case, it’s a matter of which one you like the most and the scope of the adaptation. PROJECT will cost quite a bit though as legendaries are for dedicated fans. Soulstealer, if you can craft it, has the cost solved; though getting the materials had a cost of its own.

In the end, both are great skins and have their price which isn’t low; unless you are really lucky with hextech crafting. PROJECT offers more, is more easy to access and costs a lot. Soulstealer is very well done, is tricky to get and has a certain rarity associated to it. Add to this the concept and it’s a matter of which set of features you like the most.

  25. Hi Zero. Which skin do you think would be better? PROJECT or Arclight for Vayne?

    • There’s no doubt that PROJECT: Vayne is the superior choice. The only reason we could consider Arclight is if you aren’t a dedicated fan of the NIght Hunter and you are looking for a cheap, sort of, skin with particles. In that case we would still consider whether Heartseeker isn’t also an option if a serious skin isn’t necessary; being legacy makes it less convenient nowadays, though. Arclight’s problems are rather obvious yet it does have some things to like. After all, the particles aren’t bad.

For a dedicated Vayne fan PROJECT is the best choice. If you don’t need particles there are several interesting re-models. If you need particles and a lower price then Arclight is the only option. Heartseeker is legacy and Soulstealer crafting-exclusive.

  26. Hahahah! I wonder how many times you will have to rewrite the last sentence of every Prestige Skin review. There’s nothing here for fans of the Night hunter, skin enthusiasts, league enthusiasts or future league players. These expensive chromas just show that League is not an up to date game anymore, with their game mechanics, skins or money making model(or is it? people still play this and still buy these skins it’s crazy, but just like any big company now, all they care about is money and selling their souls to the devil)
I’m excusing myself for this rant. No need to allow this comment to be posted but I’m just really sad I can’t enjoy League anymore… just can’t get myself to enjoy it. I just read your skin reviews from time to time

    • We have to, sadly, agree with you. The passion that once was visible in aspects of the game is now substituted by general greed. League of Legends had everything to be amazing but somewhere Riot took the wrong turn and things haven’t improved. Sure, money is important, it’s a business but now money feels like the priority and it’s not even disguised.

We could argue that offering a quality product is the best way of making money. That happy players are the best community you could have and so on. Sure, there’s still a lot of people that play and support League but it’s nothing like what it once was or what it could’ve been.

  27. Hi there
Im about to buy arclight vayne or prestigious le blanc from the card sales
But i wanted to know if arclight is worth it (or prestige wich one is better)

    • Arclight Vayne is somewhat lacking in that it’s simple and a bit rough. Prestigious LeBlanc shows its age but deliver what it promises even if a little too close to Classic. That’s why the price is so low. In other words, both skins have their ups and downs so it depends on what you are looking for. Arclight Vayne is more elaborate but not that well done. Prestigious LeBlanc is much more modest but good enough for what it is.

We’d recommend not to buy a skin you don’t like or aren’t sure about just because it’s cheap. There’re better skins for both Vayne and LeBlanc which would be more satisfying. If you do like these skins then consider them but don’t feel compelled to buy just because they are cheap. In the end, you spend money on something that you won’t enjoy much.
