League of Legends: Malphite Skins’ Review – StrategyZero
Sep 182012

Malphite, Shard of the Monolith
Malphite, Shard of the Monolith

Malphite, Shard of the Monolith is a golem, in the strict sense of the word, that doesn’t stay in his rocky origin. His skins reflect several kinds of material in which he takes shape like coral, marble, obsidian, ice and metal. Which one makes him look the best? Read his skins’ review and find out what makes Malphite look good.

Shamrock Malphite
Shamrock Malphite Splash Art Shamrock Malphite Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Malphite with a light-green hue over his body and a shamrock as decoration.
Model: New textures for Malphite and Granite Shield.
Particles: New particle for Seismic Shard.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: Somewhere within League of Legends’ splash arts there had to be a piece that completely skipped a background; Shamrock Malphite is the one. That’s not all, as a simple re-colour of Classic Malphite’s splash art the piece hardly has any merit: it simple adds some green and a shamrock over Malphite. The portrayal does reflect his in-game look but it’s done with as little effort as could be possible. Truth be told, this is a shame of a splash art.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Shamrock Malphite is an unimpressive re-texture that tries to be more than a colour swap but ends up barely different from Classic Malphite. As far as re-colours go it has an interesting style that hints at a Malphite covered in moss. However, the change isn’t substantial and ends up looking like Classic Malphite with a bit of green splattered on. The change on Seismic Shard matches the shamrock on his chest but the theme isn’t well implemented. Overall, it’s a disappointing skin that doesn’t strive for much with its limited changes.

Coral Reef Malphite
Coral Reef Malphite Splash Art Coral Reef Malphite Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Malphite covered in algae and made out of coral.
Model: New model for Malphite and new textures for Granite Shield.
Particles: New particles for his abilities.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: New splash sound for Ground Slam.
Splash Art: As a splash art this piece doesn’t aim to astound but it’s quality allows it to provide a good portrayal of Malphite backed by an undefined setting. The background is strange because it looks as if it’s underwater yet Malphite is walking over pools. The treasure chest is a nice addition but in general the setting isn’t very clear. Malphite doesn’t impress but he does show his coral based being rather well. Still, the pose and depiction is unconvincing, just like the background. This makes for a piece that is acceptable but leaves the feeling that could’ve been much better.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Coral Reef Malphite is quite a consistent and satisfying skin. Malphite’s coral based model is complex and eye-catching: several types of coral adorn Malphite’s body as well as some algae. The sea theme is not only well implemented in Malphite’s look but it also is nicely complemented by the particles. The look could be more attractive or impressive but still is definitely good. Without doubt, a nice skin for fans of Malphite and the sea alike.

Marble Malphite
Marble Malphite Splash Art Marble Malphite Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Malphite consisting of disjointed marble stones.
Model: New model for Malphite and new textures for Granite Shield.
Particles: New particles for Seismic Shard.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: The background of this piece is as unexciting as it is simple: a prairie with a cloudy sky behind. It’s so plain and uninteresting that while well delineated it ends up being unsatisfying. Malphite doesn’t fare much better: the in-game look is rather faithfully represented but the sketchy and plain depiction disappoints. It could be said that this splash art is simple and to the point, as such it isn’t bad at all but seldom is something so flat appropriate as a spotlight.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: This is a simple but effective new style for Malphite: the irregular marble body covered in moss gives Malphite an interesting and distinct look. However, the disjointed body parts make him look a bit comical and lacking in consistency. This perceived fragility directly opposes Malphite’s innate sturdiness. Besides, his shape bears more than a passing resemblance to Classic Malphite. In spite of this, the look is singular and attractive and coupled with the price makes for a good product.

Obsidian Malphite
Obsidian Malphite Splash Art Obsidian Malphite Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Malphite formed by obsidian and lava.
Model: New model for Malphite and new textures for Granite Shield.
Particles: New particles for Seismic Shard and Brutal Strikes.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: Sulphuric vapours cloud this piece’s background, which is quite convenient, made of falling molten rocks and a lava furrowed ground. In front of this spectacle Malphite advances in a heated state; literally. Malphite looks like a furnace: barely containing the fire within yet powered by it. The obsidian that makes his body is irregular but polished giving an idea of contained strength. Overall, it’s quite a nice splash art but the worst part is the lack of clarity. It’s a piece that shows a great scene then covers it up; which is contradictory, disappointing and regrettable.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Obsidian Malphite provides a very attractive look for Malphite based on polished yet asymmetric obsidian. The concept is particularly fitting for Malphite with a rather pleasing execution. For instance, just as Brutal Strikes shows him powered by the lava coursing through his body, when his Granite Shield falls similar lava lines become visible. The rest of the abilities don’t match his volcanic style that well but are acceptable. On the whole, Obsidian Malphite is a very appealing look for the Shard of the Monolith that could’ve been better but still is quite nice.

Glacial Malphite
Glacial Malphite Splash Art Glacial Malphite Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Malphite as an armoured ice golem.
Model: New model and reflections for Malphite and new textures for Granite Shield.
Particles: New particles for his abilities.
Animations: New animations for Seismic Shard and Ground Slam.
Sounds: New sounds for his abilities.
Splash Art: How Malphite got so big may be a mystery but the extent of his power is hardly on question: the ice is demolished with the impact and the shockwave sends his enemies flying like leaves in the wind. Sadly, that’s also the whole of the background; some clouds fill the extra room but there’s still a lot of wasted space. Malphite is well depicted in both armour and ice shards; his expression is also eloquent. Nonetheless, his lower body is little more than a shadow and so coupled with the incomplete background gives a feeling of mixed quality to the piece. In conclusion, it’s a piece that has a good composition and basic idea but the execution doesn’t fully capitalize on them.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Glacial Malphite is an impressive skin that delivers a fascinating ice theme for the Shard of the Monolith. The shards that compose Malphite’s body are carefully designed to show his resistance in addition to the armour; which also reflects his low temperature. The armour is carefully placed over the less firm parts of his body and the ice shards over his back reflect incoming light. On top of that the new particles are stunning; especially the trail of freezing air left by Malphite when Brutal Strikes is active. Besides, the new icy sounds are subtle but complete the implementation well. In conclusion, Glacial Malphite is a skin that flawlessly reflects its ice theme in every aspect. The price is quite high, almost legendary, and the product is also quite good though not quite legendary. Thus, better left for dedicated Malphite fans or collectors.

Mecha Malphite
Mecha Malphite Splash Art Mecha Malphite Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Malphite stylized as an advanced war robot.
Model: New model, reflections and animated turbine for Malphite. New textures for Granite Shield and new fists for Brutal Strikes.
Particles: New particles for his abilities and auto-attack. Also for his auto-attack during Brutal Strikes.
Animations: New animations for his abilities and recall.
Sounds: New sounds for his abilities, auto-attack and recall plus processed voice-over.
Splash Art: The hangar that houses the mechas impresses with its size and fumes. So much so, that Mecha Aatrox is barely visible despite its size; like the rest of the setting. It’s good then to find a nice touch like Ziggs and Heimerdinger giving some final touches to their massive creation. The problem is that the scale makes Malphite a suggestion. While his head and chest are vividly coloured the rest of what is discernible remains shrouded in the thick fog. Therefore, the piece offers a unique composition that exposes the scale of the mecha, but that also prevents a clear view of the main subject. In conclusion, it’s an ambitious splash art with a great idea behind it that seems to run out of space.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: To recreate the looks of a machine Mecha Malphite sports a good model that strikes as rather unassuming and even simple, until the complex mechanisms on his back are discovered. Still, considering his familiar auto-attacks and their simple sounds it’s difficult to be impressed. Thus, it’s pleasing to discover the effort of his abilities to cement the mecha fantasy. With a good combination of particles, sounds and animations every one of them has a unique touch. His recall also furthers the idea though the drill-transformer seems unexpected as it’s a concept that isn’t reflected anywhere else. That’s just the tip of some qualms that one can have. After all, the main reason that Mecha Malphite is so successful is thanks to the great work of Glacial Malphite. The reflections as well as the animations used for Seismic Shard and Ground Slam are all based on said skin; the animations practically borrowed intact. Furthermore, the new particles are rather brief and even weak so that they don’t demonstrate the expected strength. In general the skin’s seems disconnected: his particles suggest hi-tech, his body and blunt force something more industrial while his recall displays drills. In the end, Mecha Malphite is a great skin that may have some flaws but that justifies its price. It’s an attractive option for fans of Malphite or robots, but an expensive one.

Ironside Malphite
Ironside Malphite Splash Art Ironside Malphite Model
Category: Regular
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Malphite as a wood and metal contraption resembling a ship.
Model: New model for Malphite and new textures for Granite Shield.
Particles: New particles for his abilities.
Animations: New animations for Seismic Shard, Unstoppable Force and recall.
Sounds: New sounds for his recall.
Splash Art: As a mélange of old and new this splash art shows too obviously that it’s merely a new background affixed to the old portrayal of the Rogue Slaughter Fleet. Because of that the foreground and attention of the viewer is centred on the three champions before us. The depictions are rather good but the low illumination is noticeable and so the forceful addition of an outdoors background is not only unconvincing but flat out unbelievable.
Behind the first line of champions we can see some Malphite but he’s not entirely visible even. The pirate ship appearance is appreciable but details don’t abound as large parts of his body are blurred or simply obscured by another champion. The fact that the docks are displayed in quite a bare-bones way makes the setting become only a place for the champions to stand. The oppressively coloured sky doesn’t help either and even contrasts the lighting on the foreground. Perhaps if the scene had taken place at night everything would’ve meshed together better.
In the end, it’s clearly a simplistic way of reusing assets to present Malphite’s new skin. Had it been done in an effective or appealing way it would’ve been understandable. However, as the flaws are so evident it’s a disappointment undeserving of the expected high quality of products these days. It also sets a worrying precedent as corners are cut in such a plain way.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Made of wood and metal and following a design similar to a ship we find that Ironside Malphite isn’t exactly steampunk or dieselpunk. It’s somewhere in the middle, with an antique look but perhaps a strong engine powering his moves. This makes the aesthetic a bit ambiguous because the style incorporates elements that don’t associate together to create a clear theme. At best, Malphite is some sort of old-fashioned robot that surely looks different but isn’t as exciting as it seems on paper.
The new particles follow the mainly green colour palette and despite having some news designs for the abilities they don’t impress. The same can be said about the new animations, they are different but there isn’t much that feels striking.
In the end, all the modifications add up to create a skin with a unique style. The result is more intriguing than exciting but it’s surely a step away from the usual. For fans of the Shard of the Monolith and those that like skins to venture into unexplored terrain Ironside Malphite is a worthwhile choice.

Odyssey Malphite
Odyssey Malphite Splash Art Odyssey Malphite Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Malphite as a space-faring alien engineer.
Model: New model for Malphite and new knuckled for Brutal Strikes.
Particles: New particles for his abilities, auto-attack, critical hits and recall.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for his abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Splash Art: Behind, some spaceships and Jinx enjoying the use of her minigun. It seems like there are some tentacles grabbing the spaceships but everything’s very diffuse. What’s clear it’s that we are in the middle of some battle, somewhere, and Malphite is ready for it all.
Malphite’s stance is defiant and clear about his intentions. Colours are soft and the difference between lit and dark areas seems too abrupt. The depiction is detailed, though, giving his head and neck lots of attention but the outer areas being diffuse and simple in comparison. The rough look of the jacket and dull surface of the metal is a good example. The ease with which his translucent, energy knuckles can be missed is another. His legs are also largely concealed even though the space isn’t used for more than a hint.
All in all, this splash art ends up being useful for being straightforward. It covers the basics and presents Malphite in a simple but effective context. It works yet without taking advantage of the whole potential.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Odyssey Malphite aims to show him as an alien but the human hands, blue skin and white beard remind of Alistar. That aside, the model takes advantage of Malphite’s unique physique to represent the alien nature. The clothes are simple and there isn’t much that indicates an engineer as his role is to be in the spaceship; the knife certainly doesn’t. Regardless, there’s a bit of the powerful yet friendly alien he is. Granite Shield is nicely adapted by adding armour matching his jacket’s shoulders to his crest. It keeps the functionality while showing a new identity. Not everything is as successful, though.
Particles are new but they don’t really have an identity or reinforce that stated by the model. Perhaps Seismic Shard’s projectile is an invention of his. Brutal Strikes new knuckles are a nice addition as well as their progressive materialisations. Regardless, the engineer angle is weak. Unstoppable Force seems to take advantage of his alien nature but it isn’t really clear and it doesn’t have distinct visuals.
Sounds are hardly noteworthy. For some reason, Granite Shield maintains its classic rocky sound despite the use of metal armour. The rest of abilities come to sound as one would expect: technological tunes with familiar, classic-like rocky impacts.
The new recall is a joke from Jinx at an unsuspecting Malphite. While it does show the dynamic between the two it tends to be more about Jinx than Malphite; equal parts at best. So that Malphite ends up rather passive in his only new animation.
Overall, Odyssey Malphite has an interesting concept but the alien adaptation is particularly shallow; too much of classic is noticeable. It mostly takes advantage of his classic persona without adding anything of its own; model aside. There’s a degree of hi-tech on top and that’s all the skin offers. It delivers the new identity but in a basic way so, the skin can’t be considered more than good.

Conclusion

Most of Malphite skins are good yet there are shades to this colour. Glacial Malphite is recommended due to its exceptional cohesiveness and appeal. Its price means it’s a significant investment but the skin offers quite a bit and surely looks good also.

Another recommended skin is Mecha Malphite as it incorporates multiple changes to realize its theme. There is a certain lack of consistency and impact but the result is certainly appealing nonetheless. It’s an expensive choice but one with a lot to offer.

While expensive, Odyssey Malphite is rather superficial. The concept is quite good but the adaptation lacks enough depth to hide the classic design. The result has its appeal but most of the charm of the character is not present in the skin. For that reason the skin can only be good.

Lower in price but benefitting from an interesting concept and an ultimately satisfying execution Ironside Malphite is a skin with a distinct aesthetic. The colour palette is a bit restricted but the designs make the Shard look original yet recognizable in certain facets. If you like a skin that tries to differentiate itself from the rest then Ironside is a great choice.

Worth keeping in mind are Obsidian Malphite and Coral Reef Malphite, which are recommended as well. These skins deliver interesting and unique themes, so while they aren’t as striking as they could be, they both are satisfying products.

Finally, Marble Malphite stands as the cheapest alternative: the style has its peculiarities but it’s distinct and engaging. Considering what it offers and how much it asks for it’s a skin to consider.

  1. please review twisted fate skins all of his skin are cool hard to choose one

  2. Correction, the Glacial Malphite has a new sound effects when using abilities..

  3. his first skin is the second best skin in the game
    ask me

  4. When are you going to review the new mecha malphite and mecha aatrox skins?

  5. Please do one for Mecha Malph!

  6. You forgot to add Light-Blue Titanium(don’t know if that is true) at “His skins reflect several kinds of material in which he takes shape like coral, marble, obsidian and ice”.

  7. After taking Mecha for a test drive, I picked up Glacial Malphite while it was on sale. The new metal golem does feel a bit disconnected. They had many of the parts to make an amazing skin, but it seems like there were problems during assembly (maybe they didn’t read the instructions).

My big complaint is just how much the splash differs from the skin. Of course it’s going to have more detail than the in-game model; but I find that everything, right down to the color, seems to be dramatically different. In the end, I’d rather be a regal ice golem than a Happy Meal toy.

    • We agree completely. Glacial Malphite might not have as many bells and whistles but ultimately feels more consistently satisfying. That’s not to say that Mecha Malphite is bad but it does seem like they had several nice ideas and they put them together without checking how well they’d work with each other.

Besides, as you mention, Mecha Malphite does look rather plain. His back has a lot of mechanisms that make it interesting but the rest looks quite simple.

  8. After playing with mecha malphite for a while I like the skin a lot but if they could darken up the colors it would be perfect.

    • Considering the splash art you have a point; even though it can be due to a lack of lighting. However, the idea probably is to have a bright, dashing mecha fighting all around.

    • There are a lot of chromas for the mecha skin. That allows you to personalize the skin as you want and in my opinion it makes it even better than the ice one.

      • That is an advantage as long as the chromas can be purchases with IP. There’s also the fact that Mecha Malphite chromas are quite variable in what they offer. Some add up details to offer a distinct identity to the look. Others end up being, largely, a change of colour; nice but simple.

While chromas may be something to consider most of the time they are an additional layer of paid customisation. With that in mind, it’s better to compare skins on their own and leave chromas as the extra they are.

  9. Hello Zero, sorry for writing here but i didn’t knew where should I.. I am in a really big doubt and I hope you can help me out ;( I really enjoy playing malphite and fiddlesticks but I am doubt what skin to buy , currently I can only afford 1 of them, Surprise Party Fiddlesticks or Glacial Malphite, I will be glad if you tell me which skin do you prefer and which one does it worth it more for a purchase.. I will be glad if you answer this when you have some free time 😉 And also sorry for my english, it’s not very good, but I guess you can atleast understand me. Thanks in advance and keep up the good work 🙂

    • Both are good skins but there’s the matter of the price. Glacial Malphite went on sale roughly a month ago, by the end of July, and Surprise Party Fiddlesticks is on permanent sale as a legendary skin. If possible, we would advise to wait for a sale but in Glacial’s case it could mean a year as it was recently discounted. In Surprise Party’s case it doesn’t matter when you get the skin because it should keep its price intact.

In terms of value, Surprise Party is an old legendary that shows its age but is certainly satisfying at its price. Glacial is also quite good and offers a lot but the price is certainly high; which makes a sale relevant.

Adding it all up, we think that, if possible, it would be better to wait for a sale on Glacial Malphite. It will definitely take a good while but at 1350 RP it will mean a lot of RP saved. Surprise Party is a skin that you can get whenever you want so there’s no rush to catch.

In the end, it depends how much you like each champion and each skin. If you are a great Malphite fanatic you might want to ignore the benefits and long wait of a sale. At any rate, Surprise Party can be an ace up your sleeve thanks to its constant price.

  10. I would like to point out, I believe Coral Reef Malphite has a new water splash sound when he uses his Ground Slam.

  11. it would seem coral reef malphite is unavailable to purchase as of now? has it been made into a legacy skin?

it could just be on my end, but I went to purchase it this morning and no go 🙁

    • Coral Reef Malphite was retired to the Legacy Vault in the last legacy event. We’ll try to update the reviews with the new legacy labels for the skins as soon as possible. The Skin List is up to date if you want to check the categories of the skins. Sorry for the inconvenience.

  12. Hey Zero,
What is your opinion on whether to buy glacial or mecha malphite?
Please go into details on what stands out and what could of been avoided in the skins.
    Thanks!

    • Skins as expensive as these ones, 1350 RP, are better caught on sale so keep an eye open to save a good amount of RP. That being said while both are great skins they have noticeable differences.

In our opinion, Glacial Malphite has less modifications but individually they are more interesting. For instance, the trail of freezing air during Brutal Strikes is fantastic. Mecha Malphite has more changes but they aren’t as impressive though there’s more variety.

The theme is a significant feature to consider. One thing is an ice golem and another is an advanced robot. The changes reflect the concepts well and that’s something else that differences them.

It could be said that Glacial Malphite has a rather original implementation despite the simple concept. Whereas, Mecha Malphite has potential to be quite elaborate but instead is more classical in its execution.

Both are great skins and neither should disappoint a fan of Malphite. That being said consider which concept you like the most because as far as implementation goes both are quite good.

  13. Really keen to read the review for the new Ironside skin.

  14. do you think obsidian maplhite is worth it?
its going on sale so it will only be 487 RP

    • It’s one of his best skins but it’s gotten behind the times in comparison with more recent options. It’s still quite good and while it doesn’t venture too far from a re-model it does have some extras. Besides, the concept fits him quite well and the model is well done.

Being on sale, we’d say that Malphite fans will find it a good option. It’s a modest skin if compared with the most recent ones but has some nice features to offer. It won’t easily compete with newer skins but this old-timer has some good tales to tell.

  15. Is it me or does Mecha Aatrox and Mecha Malphite actually give the feel of the Decpticons from the old Transformers cartoons. Perhaps that’s why I got Mecha Malphite ASAP when it went on sale today.

    • There could very well be more than a few tributes in the Mecha line of skins to the Transformers. They certainly have quite a few elements in common so there’s surely quite a bit of Transfromers in the Mechas.

  16. Anyone else thinks that malphites skins are all great?, I would like to have them all. I finally decided to buy the coral reef one because i liked the idea behind it and its provides several changes for a reasonable price. And its near christmas so i can buy legacy skins, the thing i liked less is the red color that he turns when you activate brutal strikes. The obsidian one was another option but it has less efects changes in his abilities and is more expensive. Do you think i chose well?

    • In technical terms Coral Reef has some advantages over Obsidian Malphtie. While the latter has a more impressive model the former has more changes; in the way of particles and sounds. We agree that Brutal Strikes turning Coral Reef Malphite red is a bit strange but that’s probably the influence of the classic design. Both are good skins but it’s clear that with its price Obsidian could do more.

The best way of choosing a skin is to get the one that really appeals to you regardless of technical merit. There’s little point in choosing a skin with lots of additions or a high price if you don’t actually like it. In fact, we think that there are many great skins at low prices that, albeit modest, do a great job at communicating their theme. Sadly the opposite is also true; especially lately with the relatively new 1350 RP tier.

Perhaps for now concentrate on enjoying the skin you got. In the future, if you want another skin then you know which one could be an option. Granted, Malphite is one of those champions that tends to get good skins consistently. In that case, some patience and sales can greatly help. Ultimately, there’s no need to rush. Coral Reef Malphite is a great skin and Obsidian isn’t bad either but neither is going away forever. Sooner or later they’ll be back so it’s a matter of waiting if in doubt.

  17. Mr zero could u correct the category.I want to buy obsidian malphite, but it is written legacy, actually it is not.I know that is not a big issue, but it confused me.sry for bothering you.

    • No problem. We just checked and, at least in the NA server, Obsidian Malphite is a legacy skin. It was retired from the store along other skins to the Legacy Skin Vault. It will return by the end of the year, probably, during the opening of the Vault and, perhaps, sale.
