Introduction: Paths in the Desert
“How many times will I keep on trying?” Once again the clock ticked back and the arid desert slowly regressed into a lush landscape full of vegetation, buildings and people. His home was back alive. “For how long?” Each time he tried to manoeuvre the twisting line of fate into a destiny that wouldn’t be the extinction of everything he knew, and each time he failed. He breathed deeply and simply walked around, enjoying the hustle and bustle of a city that was fully unaware of the dire future ahead. He allowed himself to be unaware for a while, too.
The hours turned into days and quickly into months and years. How easy it was to spend time in his city. This was his people, his home: how could he not save them? He let go off that. He’d walked that path too many times to know it didn’t work. He simply moved on and lived, as if nothing were to happen, as if there was no tomorrow; there wasn’t. Little by little, the days turned darker and it became all too clear he simply couldn’t run away from it again. He could pretend nothing was wrong and he could delay his involvement but that didn’t change reality, reality didn’t care about his home.
He looked as his people waned, as the cities crumbled as the green gave way to the sands and he simply watched. Perhaps this time, he was right: he just couldn’t stop it. He was never to be able to, he was only a witness. This time, something was different. A small band of people survived. They came from all walks of life but there was something uniting them, something that made them live on. They needed a guide. He finally understood his role. He was supposed to understand and, more aware than anyone about the many paths ahead, he would provide the vision these people needed to survive in a new world. His home had changed but, there was still a home for him.
