Introduction: The Sight Atop
Ash, it’s ash falling over town all day long and it just doesn’t seem to end. “Where does it come from, Grandad?” “I don’t know, we only have a few mountains around town. Perhaps one of them can turn into a volcano?” “No, Dad, I fear this is worse than that.” “Is that why you are going, Daddy?” “Yes, but I’ll be back. I promise.” The entire town gathered to wave goodbye to the handful of brave and perhaps reckless warriors that decided to find out what was really happening.
One thing was sure, though, none of them really had an idea of what they were against. As they climbed the nearest mountain a few simply couldn’t continue. They returned defeated to town but their families grateful for having them back: they were the lucky ones. As the top approached their fates started to lose the respite of ignorance they had enjoyed for so long. It was as they were getting near than they heard the familiar creaking of flames.
As soon as each warrior reached the top they stood still, staring at what was in front of them. It puzzled the ones who hadn’t reached the top yet but once they did it all was self-explanatory. It took them a good while before they decided to make their way back as silently and carefully as possible. Once they returned to town they had agreed to never speak about what they had seen and everyone was forbidden to venture beyond town without a warrior in custody. After all, it would be very reckless of them to anger a fire god.
