Introduction: Battle of Lights
Deep below they heard the tremors. The legion advanced forwards, the battlefield before them. The machines were ready, they always are. The onlookers prepared the picnic and watched. The legion posed and machines took a stance. The beams lit the evening and the families gathered around. It was a great spectacle: the annual recreation of the Battle of Lights. It had pitted machines and humans against each other but the result was one neither side had predicted.
The earth started to shake and the earthquake shook everyone off their feet. A few bottles and sandwiches fell but people already knew what to expect. From deep below the titan emerged blasting his way with unstoppable force to the surface. Part machine, part human and all deranged by the conflict it didn’t have an objective: everyone was a target. The armies stood silent in awe until their realised that the titan wasn’t choosing a side, it was aiming.
The crash sent machines and humans alike flying. The beams concentrated on the titan but with each army attacking a different area. They barely marked the surface, it was obvious that each needed more power and across the battlefield was the help they needed. The children cheered and the families clapped. Machine and human looked at each other and without words coordinated their attacks. Limb by limb the titan was disassembled and victory was at hand.
The actors bowed and spread, returning to their families. The workers arrived ready to pick the parts of the titan and pack them. It was handy not to have to disassemble the giant but they’d have to assemble the titan for next year. Everyone watched as they toiled, cheered them on and clapped once they finished. They also returned to their families once they finished. Machine and human all shared the rest of the evening together wondering how they could’ve ever been enemies.
