Introduction: A Good Shot
The Admiral walked with the burly solider by his side. “Now this is an impressive statue.” “So much gold…” “Indeed, and the craftmanship is superb. This will fetch a nice price in the market.” “What about the stories?” “Don’t worry, I have something ready just in case. Now help me take some of the golden plates…” They huffed and puffed but they could’t pry out any of the largest ones. “Perhaps we should try one of the smaller ones?” “Good idea.” “Not really.” thought an experienced onlooker.
They put the bar into the cuirass and, using the head as support, tried to pull from behind the statue, both at the same time. All their effort wasn’t getting any results until the head moved to a side and they fell on the ground with a thump. They looked at each other and then at the statue. There was a queer look, from the statue to them, which had turned its head and was staring directly at their eyes. They didn’t need to be told to run because they were already doing so before they even realised.
“Good thing I always prepare for the worst.” said the onlooker who had an eye behind the scope and was closely following the action. The statue seemed to break out of its golden carapace and lunged forward like a grasshopper; there seemed to be more than a passing resemblance. For all the pomp and ceremony of their, stolen, uniforms both Admiral and soldier were running pretty fast; but not fast enough. The insect was almost on them when a trap snapped and caught one of its legs.
They didn’t dare look behind and kept on running. The scope was right on the creature’s head and, despite its desperate wails and inhuman shaking the bullet hit it squarely and made it roll on the floor. Struggling a bit more to no avail, the insect cut its leg from the trap and retrieved its head. It broke open the trap and then recovered its leg. By now there was no one left to hunt for the reassembled statue. From afar the insect was looked upon. “That was pretty close.” “You hired a hunter?” “Worth their weight in gold, even ours too!” “You can be sure of that and you better be ready to pay. Next time, tell me what I’m against or I might place the bullet in somebody else’s head.” “Yes, understood.”
