League of Legends: Samsung Galaxy Season 7 Skins’ Review – StrategyZero

Samsung Galaxy Season 7 Skins
Samsung Galaxy Season 7 Skins

Blue, traditional clothes. Blue, misty magic. Blue, wavy patterns. Samsung Galaxy are the champions of Season 7 and their skins subtly or not so subtly reflect that. The theme is interesting even if it doesn’t seem to have much depth. Do the executions realise skins that impress with new identities and interpretations of the champions? That’s what we’ll shortly find out. Let’s take a look.

Splash Art

The setup is pretty simple: a lake surrounded by carved rocks in the form of waves. There’s a statue of Mega Gnar which, despite how diffuse it is, looks photorealistic. Besides some rocks for the champions to stand on, except Taliyah whose feet aren’t visible, we can only comment on how clear and fresh the water looks. It’s a setting for the champions to be present but there’s no content or meaning in it.

The champions appear in a way that part of their personality is visible in their stance. Xayah and Rakan hold hands to represent their link, Gnar is mildly curiuos, Taliyah is confident, Jarvan IV serious and Ezreal cocky. Each portrayal is eloquent enough about the look of each champion. Taliyah, being at the forefront shows the sharpest colours with an appealing soft glow on her strips; Jarvan IV and Gnar’s transparencies are more solid. Ezreal manages to show a nice glow to represent his powerful magic but Xayah and Rakan look a bit dull with washed out colours.

All added together, this is a shared splash art that takes the shared part to heart. Each champion gets a good share of the space available but the composition is content with simply showing each one. The setting has little significance and each champion is only able to display a bit of personality in their stance. The result is a splash art that works at the basics but doesn’t aim at anything else.

SSG Ezreal
SSG Ezreal Splash Art SSG Ezreal Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Ezreal as a young magical prodigy.
Model: New model.
Particles: New particles for his abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for his abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: With a set of clothes blue and simple with a traditional feel, SSG Ezreal shows him as an apprentice or young sorcerer of ample potential but few accomplishments; at least as of yet. The model practically centres on the young, magical prodigy which gives an interesting even if familiar role to Ezreal. Colours are similar to each other so there isn’t much variety but there’s a good aesthetic.
This aesthetic is shared by the particles. All attacks take the shape of puffs of blue, magical smoke. Some are more condensed and some less so but the visuals, for all of their consistency, are a bit monotonous. Trueshot Barrage is where the magic is most concentrated with the SSG logo as projectile. The magical circle used when channelling is a nice addition; Elementalist Lux should be thanked. It makes the ultimate feel more special but only just.
Sounds are similar to Classic but with higher pitched tones and some magical twinklings. The feel is quite familiar but suitable to visuals that centre on soft magic.
The new recall is a clear tribute to team and associated SSG player. However, the part that sees Ezreal looking for a magical entrance with a map is a good touch.
In conclusion, this is a direct skin but one with an identity. It shows Ezreal as a young magical prodigy which employs powerful but stylised magic. The real problem is that every aspect is rather close to the classic style so that the skin feels superficial. For a legacy skin at this price, it’s surely could’ve showed more depth.

SSG Gnar
SSG Gnar Splash Art SSG Gnar Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Gnar with a degree of civilization on him.
Model: New model for Mini and Mega Gnar plus his boomerang. New blue glow for Mini Gnar’s and Mega Gnar’s armour.
Conclusion: With new, traditional-looking clothes and a bit of functional yet ornamented armour SSG Gnar seems like a more civilised take on Gnar; at least in dressing terms. Mini Gnar’s white fur is what stands out the most as well as the ornamented boomerang. The clothes are small and barely show a specific design; they do show the SSG logo though. Mega Gnar not only displays white fur but also ornamented plates that glow in blue to present a rather fantastic beast.
Particles mostly rely on a change to blue tones. Patterns on indicators benefit from decorative waves that are appealing and sparsely used. The new Boulder Toss throws an ornamented rock that could very well be a part of a building which ties in with the civilised approach. For the most part, it’s the blue colour that stands out. It may be worth taking into account that Mega Gnar’s critical hits show a large yellow particle which easily clashes with the blue scheme used in the skin.
Sounds are very similar to classic. They feel higher-pitched, with, perhaps, a more magical tone to them which also makes them feel less impactful; a problem for Mega Gnar’s brutality. For the most part, there aren’t noticeable differences that would make any ability feel special.
Two new recalls are available, one for Mini and another for Mega Gnar. In both instances Gnar eats. Mini has him trying bananas which suits his feral nature. Mega receives a more civilised meal but his manners don’t change. The lack of subtlety in having the trophy as dish hardly is a positive.
Overall, SSG Gnar is a skin that gives him a surface of civility but only that. It’s a shallow approach that has some potential even if the idea has been seen in Gentleman. Still, if the development of the skin tried it could’ve given an identity to the skin. The approach taken is too superficial to make a special skin feel as such.

SSG Jarvan IV
SSG Jarvan IV Splash Art SSG Jarvan IV Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Jarvan IV as a magical warrior.
Model: New model for Jarvan IV and his lance plus new glow for his spaulders and lance.
Conclusion: SSG Jarvan IV reduces the amount of armour and replaces it with stylised, adventurer clothes with a noticeable blue palette. The lack of strong colour contrast doesn’t let the different elements to be noticed but the impractical and heavily ornamented spaulders surely don’t go unnoticed. With a crown on his head and a stylised lance in hand we find the same Prince Jarvan IV everyone knows but with a change of clothes. At least, the new gear stands apart rather well from the classic look.
Particles’ major contribution is the many blue mists that appear in the different attacks; quite noticeable on Martial Cadence and Dragon Strike. Golden Aegis also benefits from an elaborate, wavy pattern that matches the spaulders’ decoration; plus a not too subtle use of the SSG logo. Besides, Demacian Standard’s flag shows a delicate, magical mist that is very appealing. Cataclysm, for an ultimate, doesn’t feel that special. The ornamented rocks seem more magical but don’t have the raw power the ultimate ought to have.
Sounds feel more magical and delicate with higher-pitched versions of the classic ones. This gives an appealing magic feel to abilities but also makes them feel less lethal. For an ultimate like Cataclysm and other heavy-hitting abilities it’s not the best approach.
The new recall may very well be a reference to the associated player because it makes little sense for a fantasy realm. It’s also not something that catches the eye except for how little logic it has for someone without previous knowledge. Given that other skins have reached a good compromise between fantasy and team association this seems a letdown.
On the whole, SSG Jarvan IV is a skin with a more magical, bluish take on the Exemplar. The surface is different but the core is untouched. Still, for the changes it offers the skin is appealing. It just doesn’t feel enough for a special, legacy skin that should impress with its implementation.

SSG Rakan
SSG Rakan Splash Art SSG Rakan Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Rakan in flamboyant blue.
Model: New model for Rakan.
Conclusion: It doesn’t take more than a glance to recognise Rakan but dressed in blue and that’s what SSG Rakan is all about. The new model shows richer, more decorated clothes with a bit of armour but they keep the general, classic lines associated with him. There isn’t a difference in the identity of Rakan but there’s a flashier approach to dressing which suits him well.
Abilities have different patterns with more wavy decoration but the real feature is the new colour. Whether it’s an auto-attack or an ultimate, glows turn to blue without much fanfare. It’s only the more elaborate decoration in the magical circles that helps make the abilities not feel like actual re-colours. One exception is the new flames that light up around the magical circle used to indicate Gleaming Quill’s heal. They are a nice touch that set the ability apart; despite the change being minor it’s appealing and maybe even a good addition to Classic.
Sounds follow the classic template quite closely but with more elaboration. Strings are clearer and louder, twinklings sharper and the fantasy, magical feel is enhanced thanks to it. It’s a superficial change, after all, but for its breadth, quite effective.
Two new recalls are available. Alone, Rakan paints himself a new, flamboyant hat which tangentially suits his flashy personality. With Xayah they simply raise a trophy without much display of personality; a simple reference to the skin’s ultimate aim.
All in all, SSG Rakan is more than Blue Rakan but barely just. Model, particles and sounds emphasise the flamboyance characteristic of Rakan in small yet fitting ways. This makes the skin have some meaning. However, it’s hardly enough for one that is to be a special, legacy offering.

SSG Taliyah
SSG Taliyah Splash Art SSG Taliyah Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Taliyah as a classy stoneweaver.
Model: New model for Taliyah and new glow for her cloth strips.
Particles: New particles for her abilities, auto-attack, high speed run and recall.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for her abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: In spite of the good first impression given by the model, SSG Taliyah is simply a more stylised interpretation of the Stoneweaver. Clothes are richer with nice wave patterns and glowing, translucent strips of cloth; which makes them quite eye-catching and attractive. It’s just a change of clothes but one that shows a classier, perhaps even aristocratic, Taliyah.
Particles show that the core hasn’t changed. Her rocks change to bluish tones and are ornamented with wave decorations like her clothes, still they are stones. The result is a more fantastic display of stone magic but one that, despite looking classier, is still the same as in Classic. The blue glows help with the style but it’s clear that we are moving across the same surface without delving any deeper.
Sounds are, expectedly, that of breaking rocks but soft and more brittle than the solid feel of Classic. This matches the visuals well for a classy take on stone magic. However, there’s nothing really new.
The recall is half display of stone magic and half reference to the associated SSG player. As such, one part is more fitting to the League fantasy than the other.
All added together, it doesn’t take much to say that SSG Taliyah is Blue Taliyah. The core is certainly unchanged: that of a stone sorceress. The approach is classier and more stylised but that’s only the surface. It’s fitting and attractive however, hardly as special as a legacy skin in this tier warrants.

SSG Xayah
SSG Xayah Splash Art SSG Xayah Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Xayah in misty blue.
Model: New model for Xayah and new glow for her feather cape.
Particles: New particles for her abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for her abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: In what could be one of the most straightforward SSG skins, SSG Xayah can be resumed as Blue Xayah. The clothes are different but keep the classic design with a dark blue colour scheme that doesn’t let the few different pieces stand out on their own; not that there’s anything really special anyway. The white ears almost look like part of the light blue hair and in motion everything looks monotonous in a dégradé of blues.
Feathers are modified to display a misty blue glow that gives them some personality. The visual aspect of abilities, all owed to the feathers, is nice but the consistency begets homogeneity. Auto-attacks and abilities aren’t bad looking but everything looks more or less the same.
Sounds are soft, high pitched vibrations and twinklings which make the feathers sound magical but also delicate. As far as lethality is concerned it can be perceived but there’s a clear magical angle.
There are two new recalls. On her own, Xayah is to be transported by a sort of carriage of birds. Birds are not very clear but the idea suits her nature. The shared recall with Rakan is a mere celebration of a trophy that seems a bit out of place in the fantasy of the game; though, it fits the intent of the skin.
All added together, SSG Xayah doesn’t have much to offer. The main draw is the blue colour palette with matching, misty feathers. In the end, the feathers can be attractive but it’s too little appeal for a skin that should feel special.

Conclusion

In general, SSG skins don’t feel as special as one would hope. For legacy skins at the 1350 RP tier the theme is rather homogeneous between them and the executions shallow. That’s not to say that there aren’t things to like; misty particles and wavy patterns are examples. However, they aren’t sufficient to justify skins that should impress. One by one, this is a summary of how they feel.

SSG Ezreal has a nice identity but a lacklustre execution. The young magical prodigy is interesting but the similarities to classic leave the skin feeling superficial. With more depth the identity could’ve been developed farther from Classic to better justify how special the skin is supposed to be.

SSG Gnar is a skin that adds a layer of civility to Gnar. The approach is superficial so that a new identity isn’t developed and the result is quite shallow. The most salient feature ends up being the blue colours. Given how special the skin is to be the result hardly is a good example.

SSG Jarvan IV is a skin that changes the surface with a more magical take on the Prince. The approach is appealing but the core of the champion remains intact. As this is a skin that is to be a special, legacy offering the result isn’t as impressive as one would expect.

SSG Rakan is more than Blue Rakan but only just. Model, particles and sounds reinforce his flamboyance but with small additions based on the classic template. There’s something to like in the skin but not much is offered. As a skin that is to be a special, legacy option it doesn’t seem like much.

SSG Taliyah is a classier and more stylised interpretation on the Stoneweaver. The core is untouched but the surface changes with an attractive but shallow new take. For such a special, legacy skin the approach seems rather timid despite the appeal that it evidently has.

SSG Xayah is little more than Blue Xayah. The new model dresses Xayah in shades of blue and the feathers get a misty, blue glow that feels magical but is rather homogeneous across abilities. There’s some appeal in the skin but that’s owed to the new colour. For a skin that should feel special, there isn’t much to justify it.

  1. Winners of season 7*

  2. Out of all the skins you have done is there any in particular that u would say is the best or good skins thanks , james

    • Skins that have received five stars are what we consider the best that League of Legends has to offer. You can find them in the Skin List ordering by rating. Among them there are many interesting options. Just to mention one, Program Lissandra is a good example of how to make a good adaptation of a skin and do justice to the 1350 RP price tier.
