Introduction: Looking Behind
Crackling fire burns to warm a dim lit room. The night is quiet and peaceful, albeit cold. Hanging from a wall, the mask of a long forgotten pharaoh looks down on the figure slumped on the armchair. It’s just one of many mementos which bring memories to the tired eyes that beckon them every time. It was too many years ago and tough they had been kind to the body that embarked on such monumental adventures, which are now held as unequalled legends, such a risky life had left some scars behind.
Looking around the eyes moved from the scythe of the reaper lich to the multicoloured firecrackers; a gift from an oft unstable demolitions expert, so to speak. Many adventures had been memorable and many haven’t. Those are the ones no one remembers, except the adventurer that wastes precious time on them. It was unavoidable, it had to be reasoned; if you could know beforehand then adventuring would be more science and less art. That sounded good: the art of adventuring. It almost painted a life spent between books and travels as quite an exciting prospect.
It had to be admitted that, even in this cold night, such thoughts did give some solace and warmth to the mind. It had been years well spent. At least looking back there were no regrets yet the feeling of some missed opportunities occasionally weakened the old spirit. Wondering what would’ve happened had the invitation to become part of the forest had been accepted. A life spent as a magical being beyond time and fate. How many maybes there were, but no real regret. Every closed door had opened others and sometimes you had to say no to some things. It was a hard lesson to learn: you had to accept that there was no map on life’s choices. That was what made the trip worthwhile. Besides, he’d never really needed a map.
