Introduction: A Project to an End
“Chromed cherry blossoms?” “What do you think?” “What a waste of time.” The supervisor shook his head with a long face. “This is what you’ve been up to all this time?” The scientist couldn’t resist a half smile and proceeded to explain: “The process used for chroming a petal is very flexible. This means that any kind of delicate element or circuitry can be chromed to protect it against damage. It’s the perfect solution to make implants more resistance to the wear of everyday use. The supervisor’s face changed as the practical applications dawned on him and gave way to the priceless sign of money.
There wasn’t actually a specific project for the creation of artificial implants for transhumanism. Taking a bit from here and a bit from there several discoveries ended up contributing to what would become a revolution as significant as the industrial. Human limitations became a thing of the past but such reliance on external improvement ended up providing several avenues for control that many refused to pass up on. Free will could become a flag as easily switched as inputting a simple command. Many rebelled against such oppression but for some it was too late; at least without some help.
“It is, indeed, a dark red Moon which sees us gathered together to say goodbye to our friend.” Organic and synthetic limbs felt equally heavy before the coffin which finally put to rest a courageous fighter. What hurt the most was that it was a life-long friend that put an end to a life recently freed from the ‘Project’. “We can only hope that this loss is the last and the first step in breaking the chains that hold our wills tied to the designs of unseen minds.” Bodies of all shapes and colours, with or without enhancements of any kind, scattered slowly into the avenues of the neon-lit city but one remained.
“Command unknown. Please reset.” The message blinked on the top left of the cyborg’s view. Staring with an expressionless face at the earth over the coffin the half-machine felt the mind swirling in whimsical and random thoughts; something that hadn’t happened in too many years. At what great cost freedom had come, one that wouldn’t have been accepted had the price been known. How could one face friends betrayed so deeply? Perhaps there was redemption, at some time in the future, but now all that could be done was to remember this end. It would be the beginning of a terrible revenge against a project designed to suppress. It was time to do some suppression too.
