League of Legends: SKT T1 Season 3 Skins’ Review – StrategyZero
May 062014

SKT T1 Skins
SK Telecom T1 Season 3 Commemorative Skins

SK Telecom T1, the World Champions of Season 3 inspire a set of skins with a distinctly modern style. At a glance they seem like mere merchandise but a second look reveals a few relevant details that add to the personality of each skin. Do you want to know more? Keep reading the SKT T1 skins’ review.

Splash Art

Just like last year TPA skins, the SKT T1 skins share the same splash art. Also, following on the footsteps laid before, the splash art is content with depicting the team of champions at an arena among bright lights and confetti. As dynamic as the portrayal is it also feels like it’s treading the same ground. It also doesn’t help matters that the background is so diffuse and that the setting seems empty.

That considered the champions do look good. Each depiction speaks about them though not always in the right way. Specifically, Jax appears agile and ready for a fight, Lee Sin concentrated and physically apt while Zed seems sneaky and lethal. The ladies though don’t shine as much: Zyra simply lashes forward with her classic tendrils and Vayne looks unexpectedly light-hearted and enticing.

In a way, it seems that the splash art followed the traditional path: powerful guys flanked by sexy girls. To be fair, the portrayals are nice with vibrant shading and great variety of colour. Besides, for better or for worse, all the champions look attractive in some way. Therefore, we can say that it’s a piece with a disappointing background and a good portrayal that doesn’t always display the best that each champion can offer.

SKT T1 Vayne
SKT T1 Vayne Splash Art SKT T1 Vayne Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Vayne as a stylish, modern arbalest.
Model: New model for Vayne and her crossbows.
Particles: New small bolts from her arm crossbow for her auto-attack. New big bolts from her back crossbow for Condemn and auto-attack during Final Hour.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.

Conclusion: The first thing that stands out when looking at SKT T1 Vayne is her new yellow crossbows with a distinct arrow design. They add a lot of personality to the skin and make a good match for her sunglasses; though the bright yellow stands out too much. The clothing though is a bit of a mixed bag as it’s both casual and personalized with multiple pads. It seems to be in the middle between a professional hunter and a normal pedestrian. Additionally, while it’s not a big issue, the sweater around her waist feels like unnecessary baggage. All in all, it’s a modern styling for Vayne that has good looks and has no problems in sacrificing some functionality in that pursuit.

SKT T1 Zyra
SKT T1 Zyra Splash Art SKT T1 Zyra Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Zyra wearing casual clothing.
Model: New model for Zyra.
Particles: New yellow tint for her abilities, auto-attack and plants’ attack.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: While other members of the SKT T1 group manage to convey more than just new clothes with their look Zyra doesn’t. She still looks quite nice in her casual clothing which lets her wonderful hair stand out. However, the skin also feels very straightforward and even narrow. To be fair it doesn’t convey more than plant girl in modern clothing. Besides, the new particles only alter part of the colour of each action. The result is attractive but doesn’t provide anything significant except for a contemporary look. While it might be worthwhile for Zyra’s fans most would prefer something more elaborate.

SKT T1 Zed
SKT T1 Zed Splash Art SKT T1 Zed Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Zed as a sleek, modern street ninja.
Model: New model for Zed, his shadow and shurikens.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Thanks to the comfortable and practical clothes and lean, new design for his blades and shurikens SKT T1 Zed manages to appear as a modern-day street ninja. The brightly coloured weapons clash with the stealthy approach typical of the profession and the option of fingerless gloves seem suboptimal. Regardless, the result is appealing and appears feasible in the realm of fiction. It’s also quite nice that some of his abilities are also modified as they use assets from his base model: Razor Shuriken, Living Shadow and Death Mark; in particular. On the whole, it’s a decidedly fictionalized but eye-catching and enjoyable contemporary look for Zed.

SKT T1 Lee Sin

Category: Legacy
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Lee Sin dressed as a breaker.
Model: New model for Lee Sin.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: It doesn’t require a second look to notice that Lee Sin has embraced the urban style in full. The comfortable clothing seems like a reasonable choice for someone so agile which, added to the goatee, cement the skin’s aesthetic. It all becomes even more sensible taking into consideration Lee Sin’s constant katas and interpreting them as dances. It doesn’t seem too farfetched then to picture him as a flashy b-boy displaying all his dexterity. In the end, SKT T1 Lee Sin is only a change of clothes for the Blind Monk. Fortunately, the skin leaves room for an open interpretation that works to its favour and adds some necessary personality. Thus, it’s not a bad choice for Lee Sin’s fans.

SKT T1 Jax
SKT T1 Jax Splash Art SKT T1 Jax Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Jax as a street warrior.
Model: New model for Jax and his weapon.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: New sounds for Leap Strike and auto-attacks.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Compact clothing, a wide mask and a big blunt weapon are characteristics of Jax’s preference in gear. This case follows the pattern with a suitable modern styling. The casual clothes fit his broad frame well and seem finely chosen for physical activity. The mask seems custom-made yet similar to the classic hockey mask. The weapon is what seems rather peculiar if one thinks of it as a trophy with a large handle though. However, it wouldn’t be much of a stretch to think that it’s just an elegant bird bath that Jax obtained somewhere. In that case the look is clear at revealing a tough street warrior ready to pummel. All things considered, SKT T1 Jax asks for a little effort to accept his appearance but, once you do, it becomes a fun contemporary look for the Grandmaster at Arms.

Conclusion

In general, the SKT T1 skins are rather good despite usually asking for a bit extra suspension of disbelief; if you want them to be more than merchandise. They all base themselves on modern casual styles and so the effectiveness usually depends on how fitting that would be for every champion.

The recommended skin is SKT T1 Zed due to the interesting street ninja appearance. The modified abilities aren’t bad either but they are undoubtedly a secondary effect of the new model. Regardless, the look seems practical and eye-catching as things tend to be nowadays; even ninjas.

Other great options are SKT T1 Vayne and Jax. The former updates Vayne’s look to current standards so as to make her pass as a contemporary night hunter. Unfortunately, the style is a little too casual to really be convincing. Additionally, Jax accomplishes a reasonable street fighter look with weapon of opportunity included.

Finally, both SKT T1 Zyra and Lee Sin struggle to be more than a change of clothes. With a good deal of imagination Lee Sin can be taken for a breaker swiftly performing acrobatic moves. Sadly, Zyra ends up as a plant girl in modern clothes. She does look nice but also isn’t able to say anything else.

  1. SK T1 Jax has metallic bonk sounds on his auto attacks, just like TPA Mundo.

  2. actually skt t1 jax have a new auto attack and q sound

  3. Doesn’t SKT1 Jax have new sounds for his Auto-Attack and Leap Strike?

  4. zerooooooo its that time of the month again πŸ˜€ whole bunch of new skins out and i dont know what to do πŸ˜€ on one hand i pretty much need the skt t1 zed cuz hes my main and i love him <3 on the other new skins are coming for panth and lissandra at todays update so is the skin for braum!im even thinking of getting zyras skt skin cuz it looks pretty cool!heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp

    • As always when you want a lot of skins you should consider waiting for sales to diminish the weight of the price. The SKT T1 skins are good so if you like more than a few you should be considering the bundle. It won’t save much money but every little bit helps.

With regards to Blade Queen Lissandra and Dragonslayer Pantheon we’ll have to wait to see how good they really are. Still, those two are skins that could probably wait until a sale. It may take up to a year but you’d be spending half the usual amount of RP.

  5. OMG finally the review!! Thanks for the reviews, you’ve just made my day :)! Also are the TPA skins going to come out in a bundle or can you get each skin separatly? Thanks

    • Not at all, hope you find them useful.

The announcement said that there would be a bundle including the five TPA skins; which is now available. It mentioned nothing about the skins being purchasable individually and they currently aren’t.

      • We’re also bringing the Taipei Assassin skins out of the vault from May 6 through May 19. Each one will be 750 RP with the TPA bundle going for 2812 RP (5358 RP if you need the champions). I guess this means that it can be bought individually.

    • You can buy them all separate,i got TPA Shen when they first dropped them and Ezreal today

  6. im not sure what to get, skt zed or jax. i use both champs frequently but i could only get one. help please πŸ™

    • Well, both are quite good though Zed stands out more due to the new model for his shadow and shurikens. However, Jax also has a new sounds so it could be a matter of what you prefer: visual or aural additions. Also, one is a modern ninja and the other a street warrior so the differents concepts could help you decide.

  7. yes u can purchase them separetely i just checked the store.each is available for 750 rp

  8. I find Zyra’s skin to be very attractive because it’s kind of away from her lore and concept – she is a human now and her hair is real hair. Neither Zyra, nor her hair are plants now. I find this very exciting since this is the first time Riot is running away from the nature/plant concept which appears even in her Haunting 1350rp. skin. For me Zyra and Vayne steal the spotlight not only on the splash art but in-game too. In terms of particles, remember what Riot said, she is a very hard champion to put new particles on, if they put a particle on her seeds, for example, they have to make her plants different in order to make them match together and adjust her passive too since she becomes a plant herself upon dying – and this is beyond the 750rp price. Lee’s skin is the most dissapointing of the 5 because he looks like a motorcycle driver and doesnt have anything special added to his skin probably because a while a go he got a new skin – the pool party one.

    • You make an interesting point about Lee Sin. It’s probable that his skin wasn’t a priority as he recently received one; despite it being nothing really special. However, we still think that there’s room for improvement for Zyra and even Vayne.

In particular, it wouldn’t be necessary to make significant changes to Zyra’s plants. It’s simply that the skin, while it provides a unique human look for her, ends up being little more than a change of clothes. As other skins at this price demonstrate, more can be done with little.
