League of Legends: Ziggs Skins’ Review – StrategyZero
Jan 022013

Ziggs, the Hexplosives Expert
Ziggs, the Hexplosives Expert

Ziggs, the Hexplosives Expert is a bomber from every angle: powder, water or snow, even pixels; if it explodes then Ziggs uses it. Being Dean of Demolitions and having his whole life revolving around detonations definitely shows how dedicated, fascinated and obsessed the yordle is. His skins even reinforce his passion showing how versatile a bombardier can be. If choosing outfits lights your fuse or you just want to have a blast then hurl yourself at this skins’ review.

Mad Scientist Ziggs
Mad Scientist Ziggs Splash Art Mad Scientist Ziggs Model
Category: Regular
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Ziggs as a manic scientist.
Model: Major model changes for Ziggs and new model for his bombs.
Particles: Green flames for Bouncing Bomb and grey smoke for his auto-attack.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: New breaking glass sounds for his abilities.
Splash Art: The setting is quite elaborate: a laboratory full of tools, beakers, flasks and cylinders; filled with who knows what. The few colours used make the background look murky but it’s acceptable nonetheless. Ziggs stands on one side of the picture with his thinking cap on as well as a remote control and a flask. The shading seems rather rough but manages to display the weird design of his the glasses and cap; though it also shows his deformed nose and waxy fur. Overall, the issues of the piece aren’t a deal breaker but they do affect its quality. Consequently, it’s an interesting portrayal that suffers from some problems.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Mad Scientist Ziggs has a good concept but a peculiar implementation. The round-bottom flasks as bombs are nice and the uniform is acceptable though not explicitly evocative of a laboratory coat. Nonetheless, it’s the peculiar goggles and bizarre helmet that stand out the most on Ziggs. If you don’t mind them then it’s a nice scientist skin but if you find them convoluted then you may not enjoy the skin as much. All things considered, it’s a strange but interesting skin for Ziggs.

Major Ziggs
Major Ziggs Splash Art Major Ziggs Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Ziggs as a highly condecorated grenadier.
Model: Major model changes for Ziggs and new textures for his bombs.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: The background suggest, more than show, a battlefield: some soldier silhouettes on the left, an explosion and barbed wire all around. Most of the setting is just smoke or, better said, just some dark hues to fill the space. Ziggs is outlined well but the shading looks a bit dull; especially the sparks and reflections. Nevertheless, the portrayal works even though it hardly impresses.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Major Ziggs offers an appealing militaristic style that shares a few traits with Classic Ziggs. In particular, the bombs are simply re-coloured so they are essentially identical. Still, the uniform is nice looking, the goggles passable and the helmet too tall; yet not a big issue. If you wanted a more serious, earring-less, look for Ziggs then this is probably as close as the yordle desires to go. In conclusion, it’s an acceptable skin that may cater to army fans but that fails at impressing.

Pool Party Ziggs
Pool Party Ziggs Splash Art Pool Party Ziggs Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Ziggs as an humorous water bomber.
Model: Major model changes for Ziggs and new model for his bombs plus new glow for his bombs.
Particles: New water particles for his abilities, auto-attack, death, taunt and joke.
Animations: New animation when knocked away by Satchel Charge.
Sounds: New water sounds for his abilities, auto-attack, death, taunt, joke and standing idle.
Splash Art: This piece is fascinating due to the multiple cameos which actually become it’s saving grace and most prominent feature. The background is good but mostly sky due to the chosen perspective. Furthermore, the champions’ depictions look quite sketchy and plain; even those that are closest. Ziggs shows a stark difference in quality as he has a clear outline and bright colours. Unfortunately, while the stance is quite fitting it also covers a good part of his body. On the whole, it’s a splash art with an attractive composition but an execution that lets down a bit.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: In spite of being a joke skin, Pool Party Ziggs is remarkable not only for the extent and consistency of features but also for the suitability and clever adaptation. Water bombs with an abundance of splashes make for a novel feel for the yordle bomber. The model is uninspired but appropriate: Ziggs is dressed with a complete array of floating aids plus some scuba and swimming gear. The bombs are simple but fitting as the outfit yet, just like the goggles, they seem rather plain. Fortunately, the water particles add a nice layer of visual effects that allow the skin to distinguish itself. In the end, it’s a nice and fun skin that stays fresh thanks to a concept close to Ziggs persona. Nonetheless, it seems to try too hard to be funny and still not feel really comical.

Snow Day Ziggs
Snow Day Ziggs Splash Art Snow Day Ziggs Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Ziggs ready for a snow war.
Model: New model for Ziggs and his bombs.
Particles: New snow particles for his abilities, auto-attack, death, taunt and joke.
Animations: New animation for recall and when knocked away by Satchel Charge.
Sounds: New snow sounds for his abilities, auto-attack, recall, death, joke, taunt and standing idle.
Splash Art: The idea of this piece seems to be Ziggs jumping in front of the moon to throw his Mega Inferno Bomb. Unfortunately, that means that the background is a simple and diffuse sky with a few trees nearby. At least, Ziggs portrayal is quite good: the body is fully visible so as to appreciate the great use of colours, lights and attention to detail. Not only is the depiction clear and well defined but it also goes to the point of displaying wrinkles and seams on the clothes. Still, the fur looks unconvincing, too flat and diffuse; maybe even fuzzy. In the end, it’s a piece that serves as a great portrayal but not the best splash art.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Snow Day Ziggs is a skin that chooses the perfect concept for the yordle bomber and executes it near flawlessly. The clothes are nothing new but reasonable designed. However, the snow bombs are simply great: they have faces, carrot noses or other elements to clearly resemble snow-man heads. Moreover, the snow particles and sounds greatly help round the theme; despite leftover sounds like a lit fuse, metal clashing or explosions being present. Even the recall has Ziggs making a snow-man with his bombs so that the concept is implemented with a pleasing cohesiveness. On the whole, Snow Day Ziggs could’ve been better but the concept is so well chosen and delivered that it overcomes any minor deficiencies it may have.

Master Arcanist Ziggs
Master Arcanist Ziggs Splash Art Master Arcanist Ziggs Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Ziggs as an arcane wizard.
Model: New model for Ziggs and his bombs plus new glow for his bombs.
Particles: New particles for his abilities, auto-attack, recall, death, taunt and joke.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for his abilities, auto-attack, recall, death, taunt, joke and standing idle.
Splash Art: The lair of a wizard is usually a mysterious place and, despite it being too diffuse, one can get a general idea of where they prefer to spend their time. The lack of detail is a missed opportunity to reveal mysterious tomes and a rich bookcase surrounded by atypical architecture. The desk where Ziggs furiously works is lit by candles that have little concern for the books they lay on. The pages where he writes appear charred and even burning which, though impactful, is an exaggeration.
Looking from left to right we can notice how Ziggs clarity diminishes. Leaving the mystery of his lower body behind, Ziggs’ head is sharp and detailed. Surfaces reflect light and the textures are clear. It’s strange to notice that his otherwise perfect smile exhibits some uneven dental pieces but the tooth that goes from top to bottom is just bizarre. His clothes are uneven as well just like his fur: the metal straps on his chest look good but the cloth is sketchy while the fur on his finger is much waxier than in his face; though there’s a bit of that. Past a scroll and a sand clock Ziggs holds a burning bomb that blurs everything around it. The effect is actually good as it demonstrates its magical power. Even if more clarity is missed the disturbance is justified and adds to the piece.
In the end, this is a rather interesting and attractive splash art with flaws that affect the communication of its message. Nevertheless, it’s not far from being one of League of Legends best.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: A look at Master Arcanist Ziggs gives the idea that he makes a rather dangerous and volatile sorcerer. The usual tools of the trade are present: a fancy, pointy hat; bombs glowing with power and a mysterious tome that doesn’t seem as well strapped as it should be. His clothes are nothing out of the ordinary, disappointing actually, and the cowl under the hat seems whimsical; or perhaps reasonable for Ziggs’ mind. Still, there are good touches like the wound on the right ear, even if the earring would be on the left ear, and the styled goggles that should look more like glasses and less like a mask.
That star of the skin is the glowing bombs and their new magical sounds. They have a mysterious, attractive feel that communicates the magical angle quite well. The abilities make a lot out of it, from offering satisfying explosions to relying on an explosive mixture of items for Satchel Charge or a tome of uncontainable power for Mega Inferno Bomb. Both particles and sounds are very well done and the consistency of the skin is exemplary: the bombs always look and sound as they should and the magic always appears mystical yet powerful.
The new recall attempts to capture the present mystic air but ends up lacking direction. It seems like an afterthought that doesn’t reinforce enough the lunatic wizard image one gets out of the skin.
In general, this is a well done skin that explains its high price quite well. With a bit more work it could’ve reached excellence but, as it is, it’s a great option for fans of magical explosions. For fans of Ziggs, Master Arcanist is an alternative with a lot to like.

Battle Boss Ziggs
Battle Boss Ziggs Splash Art Battle Boss Ziggs Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Ziggs as an 8-bit bomber boss.
Model: New model for Ziggs and his bombs plus new pixelated sparks for his bombs.
Particles: New particles for his abilities, auto-attack, taunt, joke, death and recall.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for his abilities, auto-attack, taunt, joke, death and recall plus processed voice-over.
Splash Art: An arcade in turmoil as the wave of pixels, of unknown origin and undefined shape, give way to the massive figure of a level boss in the real world. On the higher level someone runs before some cabinets and that’s as much as the intense fog allows one to see. Below, amidst the diffuse cabinets of familiar arcade figures a boy falls on the right while a recognisable character takes cover on the left. The boss isn’t alone, charges advance with him to ensure that more destruction is brought about. While the idea of a level boss materialising in the arcade would’ve fit any champion with the required pixellated design it’s not bad. It’s also not particularly tailored to this specific version of Ziggs so it seems a generic choice. In fact, other champions with more overt conquest inclinations would’ve been a better choice; like a certain someone’s invasion hinted at the bottom.
Ziggs appears with a rather complete and appealing depiction. For the most part, his whole body is visible and, even if the arms and legs are a tad diffuse, all of his body is well delineated and shaded. Attention is captured by the screen-face with its lit up features. This is a fantastic choice that isn’t fully appreciable in the three-dimensional version despite being a very attractive characteristic. There’s also the faint pixellization of the bombs, which is also invisible in three dimensions as well as the various folds and wrinkles of his clothes; which look simplistic and flat when we add a dimension. Not all is great as the sketchy crown shows and other golden parts. Also the ears appear not to share the same style as the rest of the head and body; as if each were drawn by other people. The slight voxellized body of Ziggs is also a great touch that is all for show as it’s not even suggested in-game. Truth be told, there’s a lot of stylisation that surely makes the portrayal more appealing but that has no counterpart in the actual skin which can be considered misleading.
In general, this is a good splash art with an impactful entrance of Ziggs which doesn’t really resist a minimal examination of his intentions. The arcade setting has many references but meaning eludes the context. Ziggs appears full of detail and style but to the point that the three-dimensional counterpart seems like a simple shadow of the bi-dimensional self. Still, it does make for a really fine presentation card.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: In spite of the classic, familiar, appealing and natural Bomberman reference Battle Boss Ziggs doesn’t seem to make the most of said concept. The model is rather simplistic with whole empty areas that leave a sparse design with little to tell. There’s the feel of a suit or perhaps a robot given his face. The lit up eyes, nose and mouth are what really stands out from the whole design. The floating crown doesn’t seem to have much meaning and then there’re only the bombs to speak of. Their mischievous smirk, in all three of them, is a fitting addition that demonstrates their intentions well enough. Sadly, they are secondary characters even if they are interesting.
Particles tend to be simple and sometimes a bit too much. The square sparks that come out of bombs in hand can feel crude. Something similar can be said about the trail that auto-attacks, with and without Short Fuse, leave behind. The trail and bomb used for the auto-attacks is quite appealing and the explosions as well; though the Short Fuse improved version seems weaker. As could be expected, Bouncing Bomb looks similar to auto-attacks. The real difference is the more elaborate trail and the pixellated particles for bounces and explosions. While the grid is a good touch and the feel is correct explosions do look a bit weak. Satchel Charge throws a simply designed but nicely coloured charge with a faint grid around; the pixels floating from the edge are a good touch. The explosion is colourful and more attractive than Bouncing Bomb’s yet still lacks punch. It should come as no surprise that Hexplosive Minefield’s little mines aren’t known for their potency as the small explosions do demonstrate; though their design is eye-catching. What is quite appealing is how the mines peek out of the ground as if hidden under their caps. It’s a fantastic touch that makes the ability stand out and makes one wonder why more of this kind of changes weren’t added to other abilities, the rest of the skin and even similar skins. A good recipient for that extra love would’ve been the ultimate which looks generic. Besides the expected pixellated look Mega Inferno Bomb isn’t as high a point in the skill set as it should be. The face on the ground is a fitting but shy touch; despite the slight texture animation. The bomb flies with small and few sparks behind and lands in a rather appealing but not impactful explosion. The charred grid left behind simply seems lacking.
This lack of impact in the abilities isn’t only visual but also aural: auto-attacks, whether with Short Fuse or not, have too brief and weak a sound. This continues on. Bouncing Bomb seems playful and suitable but not powerful; still the bounces fit the mischievous bombs quite well even if the explosion seems hollow. Satchel Charge has a nice countdown sound but the explosion seems like shards of plastic have been broken. Hexplosive Minefield has an aptly playful tune for when it’s laid out. At the risk of being repetitive, the explosion sounds weak like a puff of smoke. Mega Inferno Bomb starts with a suitable whistle for when it’s in the air, much like in Classic, with a little extra noise that aims to be the laugh of the face on the ground. The eventual explosion has more in common with a deflating balloon than anything related to a detonation.
The recall is a nice Bomberman reference that might be one of the most eloquent explosions the skin is able to show. Taunt and joke also have new particles and sounds for their 8-bit forms and, again, have more punch than one would expect. They make for a nice consistency pass that raises doubts about why abilities aren’t as effective.
All added together, Battle Boss Ziggs has everything to be a great Bomberman homage but falls flat. The model may aim to keep the simplicity of Bomberman but ends up not able to say enough; though when it says something, the face, it’s rather good. The particles and sounds succeed in communicating the attractive mischief proposed by the bombs. However, when it comes to raw power explosions feel flat and weak which is a real problem in a champion based around bombs. Without much else to add to the equation the skin has its moments but doesn’t capitalise on the great opportunity brought by the concept. This makes Battle Boss Ziggs a good skin oozing unexploited potential.

Odyssey Ziggs
Odyssey Ziggs Splash Art Odyssey Ziggs Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Ziggs as a space-faring, mining engineer.
Model: New model for Ziggs and new glowing bombs.
Particles: New particles for his abilities, auto-attack, joke, taunt, death and recall.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for his abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Splash Art: The place is some alien world with strange flora and fauna. Of course, we couldn’t miss a large explosion with Ziggs around. The problem is that everything, from sky to ground is so diffuse that the setting appears bare and simplistic despite having a good potential for an exotic locale.
Ziggs doesn’t fare much better. The perspective does him no favours to make the look clearer. This is particularly important as, in-game, a top view is used instead. In spite of this, one can see part of his alien, tentacled hair and visor but such interesting elements seem relegated in favour of a sole and a simple, metal suit. The bomb on top, is also partially visible which, Ziggs being an expert at demolitions, makes no sense. At least, we can see clearly his mouth and teeth though they aren’t as relevant in-game as the splash art prominently implies
All added together, this is a splash art that doesn’t focus on the real, important elements of the champion. It chooses a perspective that relegates them and so the balance of style versus usefulness is lost as neither is actually effective. At some basic level, the piece works, but the viewer shouldn’t have to make an effort to notice the look of a champion.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Even in space bombs are useful. Odyssey Ziggs doesn’t change that but the adaptation ends up only changing the look of the bombs and hardly the feel of the explosions. The model keeps his wide grin intact and replaces other elements while keeping the classic design. Instead of goggles, for instance, we get a visor. However, the visor looks all metallic and so different from the digital look the splash art, barely, implies. The suit is simple and only the advanced bomb on his back stands out. The bombs on his hands also catch the eye but for all their glowing power they are quite classical in behaviour.
The particles show as much. The cartoony explosions caused by the bombs are all rather similar but their aesthetic is appealing even if they don’t feel impactful. Hexplosive Minefield is quite attractive because Ziggs throws a device which spreads the mines on the ground, a great touch. Mega Inferno Bomb, for an ultimate, seems weaker than other explosions due to its distinct electromagnetic nature; still it’s a big blast.
Sounds are, by and large, all about hi-tech energy explosions which keep the aural side consistent but homogeneous; it doesn’t help that they don’t feel powerful also. The one exception is Mega Inferno Bomb with its weaker, electric sounds. Bouncing Bomb’s rebounds, Satchel Charge counting beeps and Hexplosive Minefield spread of mines are quite pleasing despite being parts of abilities.
The new recall seems to be a cartoony joke that doesn’t have much in common with the skin’s identity. It manages for a less than ideal form of transport but there isn’t a development of the theme.
All added together, Odyssey Ziggs has everything to be a remarkable and memorable skin. While it manages to be appealing it also doesn’t capitalise on its best assets. Explosions tend to lack the power expected and the skin adopts a cartoony feel to the detriment of making the technology shine with its own futuristic charm; the alien identity seems forgotten. The result isn’t bad but the approach may not be ideal.

Conclusion

Ziggs’s skins are based on his demolisher nature and so take many aspects from the multiple uses of bombs. The recommended purchase, despite the high price, is Master Arcanist Ziggs. The model is adequate but the bombs steal the show. Additionally, both particles and sounds make a great job at defining the identity of the skin. For a fan of explosions with a touch of mysticism this is a great choice.

An alternative with less bang but a distinct identity is Pool Party Ziggs. It never feels as funny as it seems and water as a weapon noticeably lacks impact. Regardless, it manages to present a different style that has its appeal. In spite of being somewhat exaggerated it has a nice water theme.

One skin that shouldn’t be ignored is Snow Day Ziggs: it has as many features as more expensive alternatives at a lower price but it’s a legacy skin. Nevertheless, it has a pleasing snow theme that, even if still not actually lethal, seems able to cause some harm with its convincing particles and sounds.

In spite of the appeal of the Bomberman tribute Battle Boss Ziggs fails to make the most out of its concept. There’s attractive bomb mischief to be had but when it comes to the conclusion of every explosive we find that the ensuing detonations feel weak. Although there are things to like there’s also a lot of unexploited potential in the skin.

Odyssey Ziggs is a good skin that doesn’t take advantage of its potential. The energy bombs and advanced technology are appealing but the skin squanders the appeal in too cartoony a way. There’s not enough impact in the explosions and the identity of the skin also doesn’t seem to be strong. Still, there’re things to like.

Finally, Ziggs’ release skins are simply not as good as the other options. The prices are certainly lower but the extent of the changes is limited and that affects the implementation of the themes. Specifically, Mad Scientist Ziggs may be too extravagant and Major Ziggs a tad uninspired. They aren’t bad options at all but paying less means getting less in this case.

  1. In Mad Scientist Ziggs, aren’t the explosions sort of green? And black-ish for Major Ziggs? I noticed those in the skin spotlight on Youtube. Could you second check? Because I don’t have the skins so I figure you would have a better idea of if they’re there or not.

    • Good eye, Mad Scientist Ziggs has subtle green flames when Bouncing Bomb explodes and grey smoke for his auto-attack. However, Major Ziggs seems to have the same particles as Classic Ziggs.

      Thanks for the information.

      • I think you should update this. Mad Scientist Ziggs is his best skin hands down. Bear with me here while I explain. The skin splash art in itself is quite elaborate, especially the details (the brain in the jar, the warning sign). It might not be super colourful, but that is not the theme of the skin – the bleak colours give it a “Zaunian lab” feel, which is what Riot was going for. The skin itself is even better than the splash art, from the gloves (which are black security golves) to the particles, which are almost all changed (except for Satchel Charge). All his retextured skills have different sounds, and even while standing still you can hear the liquid in the bottles making a sound. His autoattacks (which do have new particles) also have special sounds on impact. His Q has a glass bouncing sound and a new sound when exploding. All of Ziggs’s skills emit a green cloud when they explode. I don’t see how you could say that Snow Day is better than Mad Scientist. Snow Day’s sounds ruin his bombs, by removing any sort of “explosion” or “destruction” – they sound just like someone throwing a pillow (which is fine, but it sort of ruins ziggs). Snow Day’s recall animation itself isn’t too great, and only comes from the fact that it is a more recent skin (just like monarch kogmaw doesn’t have new particles but is still an amazing skin). I don’t mean to impose my opinion on you, but this review is quite lacking.

        • We try our best to provide advice and we certainly don’t have the last word on skins’ quality. You make good points and we are far from infallible at catching additions. Also, consider that Riot has been sneakily adding extras, like Classic Blitzcrank’s dance sounds from iBlitzcrank, so the skin could’ve received a few changes.

We agree that Monarch Kog’Maw is a very good example of how to do much with little. However, that’s not the case of Snow Day Ziggs; quite the opposite in fact. Snow Day Ziggs is an elaborate skin that succeeds at changing part of the core of the champion: the feel of the bombs. Instead of explosives, snow is used and at that the skin is very effective.

In our opinion Snow Day Ziggs is quite good at what it does but that may not be to everyone’s liking. In the case of Mad Scientist Ziggs we thought that the skin could’ve elaborated more on the concept to better reflect its angles. Regardless, we’ll give the skin another look taking into consideration your words; we could’ve missed some extras.

          • I might’ve written that poorly – what I meant was that Mad Scientist is an extremely good skin even though it was released with ziggs himself 😛
I suggest you do look again at that skin – you seem to be criticizing it for not being a “scientist” skin, while it is a “MAD scientist” skin! The hat on his head is wonky high tech gear that showcases exactly that – the “mad” part of the skin. Personally I would rate the skin a 5/5, but I can see other people not liking it as much as me. It does deserve at least a 4 out of 5 though!

          • The time when it was released isn’t really relevant what actually matters is how good the skin is at delivering it’s theme. While it’s true that the skin has a mad scientist feel it seems to exaggerate in parts and be just alright in others. The helmet and googles aren’t exactly a bad thing but they look a little more strange than usual.

We agree that it’s worth giving another look at the skin, especially to check for sneaky additions, but as far as looks go the mad scientist feel is there but doesn’t impress.

        • I actually Recommend Snowday Ziggs It is more Impressive Look and Skills. And also It is Legacy :)))))))))))))))))))))))) love the snowday

          • Snowday Ziggs is really well done: the concept fits Ziggs perfectly and the implementation is really good. If you can get your hands on it then it won’t disappoint.

      • I recently started playing Ziggs significantly and I too find the Mad Scientist Ziggs to be the best of all the skins. I almost always wait for skin sales, but I think I am going to just go ahead and get it for 975. I will probably get Snow Ziggs when it comes on sale again soon but I think I like the mad scientist one better any.

The splash art is fantastic. Very detailed, interesting, and funny. Thematically they hit the nail on the head with the skin in general, because quite simply, he looks like a cooky mad scientist.

I am a bit suprised it only received a 3 out of 5. I liken this skin to the Monarch Kog’Maw or Sewn Chaos Orianna (which I have both of). Maybe not that great of particle effects, but the theme and execution on these skins are spot-on. It would be nice to have more particle effects, but it isn’t quite necessary due to how cool the skins are without them.

For the most part I agree with this site, and as a collector of on sale skins I frequently visit it to get some insight. I just feel 3 out of 5 for the Mad Scientist Ziggs is not fair. Keep up the good work!

        Happy Summoning!

        BeeGeePee

        • Glad that you like the site, we hope you find it useful.

We understand your comparison, it seems like a skin that does much with little. The problem is that both Monarch and Sewn Chaos cost almost half of Mad Scientist’s price. The idea of a Mad Scientist, even if convoluted, is delivered well but for the price we would expect the skin to be more refined.

  2. Well, even after this excellent review, I’m still gonna go with Major Ziggs. It may not be as good a value as Pool Party or even Mad Scientist, but the model is so detailed and looks excellent. The individual badges, patches, and shoulder thingies are really cool and the jacket and helmet…. just….. I don’t know why but they just make this skin haha.
But still thanks for the review 😀

    • Major Ziggs isn’t a bad skin at all; even though there are better options. Besides, we just recommend skins so if you like Major Ziggs chances are that you will enjoy it.

  3. Is there a new animation for when Ziggs jumps off his Satchel Charge with Pool Party Ziggs?

  4. Love your reviews man, and hate to be that guy but… there’s a spelling error. In your description for the pool party Ziggs, you’ve written: “…the championsf depictions…” I think that f snuck up on ya man. Don’t mean to be a pest, just trying to keep your stuff as high quality as the work you put into it.

    • Glad that you like them and no need to worry, we appreciate the correction. Readers deserve that we work to our highest standards so correct spelling is basic. Specifically, it was an issue with the apostrophe and its codification which has been rectified.

Thanks for the notice and if you notice anything else don’t hesitate to drop us a line.

  5. Are you guys gonna get bought out buy Curse too? Like Leaguepedia, LolNexus, and I think there is one more im forgetting. I’m assuming with how ‘wealthy’ the Crs organization is they probably offered a pretty penny for it.

    • We haven’t been contacted by any organization yet so maybe we aren’t as valuable as it seems. Still, don’t worry, we plan to keep skins’ review as useful as possible regardless of the situation.

  6. It said Pool Party Ziggs is better option but why isit still 3 stars? O.o

    • Sorry we didn’t notice your message before. Pool Party Ziggs is his better skin because it provides more elements and they are rather well done. The only issue the skin has is it’s high price; which sales alleviate but don’t elliminate. Major and Mad Scientist aren’t bad skins but if you have to choose one then Pool Party on sale would be a tempting option.

  7. I just realized that there are many champions in Pool Party ziggs splash art. There is katarina, garen, darius, ahri, riven, diana, renekton, and many others i cant recognize. I really like the pool party ziggs look in game too.

    • Many splash arts have quite a few cameos by other champions. We often reference the fact but don’t make an entire list so as not to spoil the fun. Overall, for a fun skin, both splash art and in-game execution of Pool Party Ziggs is rather good.

  8. What is your opinion of classic Ziggs? I really like the detail in the background, although the lighting of the city could definitely be a bit brighter.

    • Speaking of the splash art, we agree. The background is unnecessarily lacking in detail as there’s little doubt who’s the star of the piece. The explosive chaos also seems too straightforward, Ziggs seems like the kind that would leave quite a mark. Regardless, it works even though with some issues.

As far as looks go in-game it all seems reasonably well done. It’s difficult to compare as we use Classic Ziggs as the base to review his skins. We’d say that the skin goes straight to the point: it gives the yordle some protection and lots of bombs. The big smile is a good aspect that the voice-over and animations try to capitalize on and, for the most part, he does seem unstable enough like a bomb.

  9. Hello zero, which skin would you recommend?master arcanist ziggs or forsaken jayce .both are discounted to 975rp at the region I play, until 25 july.by the way love your reviews new and old, keep up the good work.

    • Glad that you like the reviews.

We find that Master Arcanist Ziggs is a very well done skin. There are cheaper skins that compete with it but it manages a unique identity that makes it stand out. Forsaken Jayce is also attractive but a bit subdued and not as vibrant as Master Arcanist. Regardless, it manages to define an interesting personality for Jayce.

At large, the skins stand on equal ground. Master Arcanist may be more visually impressive but Forsaken has a distinct style too. It also depends on which champion you play more and which concept you prefer. That said, 975 RP sounds like an early sale price; we aren’t sure how skins are priced in your region though. Perhaps waiting for a regular sale is advisable.

That aside, Master Arcanist Ziggs is a great skin that gets a lot of competition by cheaper skins that are practically as good as it is. Forsaken Jayce manages to stand apart a bit better but only a bit and could’ve been better focused. You could say that Master Arcanist may be a better realised skin yet it’s not the only factor to consider when buying a skin. Take into account all of the points mentioned and weight them against your personal preference to reach a decision that is right for you. After all, you should enjoy the skin. The rest is secondary.

  10. When is the Battle Boss skin review coming out?

  11. I just want to point out that Major Ziggs has some very minor particle additions – smoke particles are heavier and darker, and exploded bombs leave more pronounced trails of gunpowder. Thus, there are some minor particle additions/changes. I know it’s nothing substantial, but I wanted to add that for the sake of accuracy and completeness :p

    • We gave Major Ziggs another look in comparison with Classic and we find that they look the same. Perhaps there is a slight difference in the smoke but it’s so subtle that we can’t be sure. If you have a clear comparison of the abilities we’ll take a look and update the review as necessary, though.

      • Sorry, you are right. For some reason I was convinced Major Ziggs had minor particle changes, but I’ve just forgotten how the particles of classic look – which is the same. There are no particle changes sans the minefield bombs follow the black and gold design of the skin. So yeah, Major Ziggs doesn’t have any new particles as you noted.

Great review for Battle Boss Ziggs! In my opinion it is actually quite a good skin, particularly when it comes to model. I know you criticize the model for oversimplicity, but I feel like the colorscheme and textures are excellently done and seem to round out the pixelated face. Apart from the crown which is a nice but puzzling addition, I actually think BB Ziggs is more visually attractive than BB Brand for example. All in all, these skins, although not perfect, have managed to change the visuals of the champions so much that sometimes it feels like an entirely different champion, at least visually. Brand and Malzahar in particular look immensely different, which I think adds to the value and charm of the skins. But all in all, I think your review of Ziggs is fair, although again the model and textures are of very high quality and definitely eye-catching. For me it’s the particles (sans W and E) that really let me down.

        • We do remember that at some time Major Ziggs had or was supposed to have dark smoke for the bombs, as you mentioned. Perhaps it was removed at some point or never actually added as it was supposed to. We don’t recall exactly how it all went.

We agree that Battle Boss Ziggs, has a good model but mostly the face is interesting and never as much as the potential of the splash art. In terms of particles it’s a rather well adapted and perhaps one of the most interesting pixel-based skins. Sadly, the explosions can feel weak and the sounds don’t help either. Thus, the feel isn’t right. The theme of the skins is well presented but not always taken advantage as much as it could’ve. Those weak spots are probably the skins major issues.

  12. Reading you review I was just wondering what you think is the best skin in terms of particles for ziggs’s ultimate attack. Thanks!

    • It’ll be between Pool Party, Snow Day and Master Arcanist. Being the newest and one of the most expensive Master Arcanist could have an advantage. After all, it does show and explosion it just changes the source to magic. Snow Day can be deadly but only if enough snow is involved. Pool Party is all for fun; unless we are drowning people with water.

To a point it’s a matter of taste as any of these skins have quite good particles. We have to admit that Master Arcanist is quite effective at communicating the extent of the explosion. Snow Day may need more snow and Pool Party more water or force. The idea is to have a huge impact and while they all are clear about it the source may help Master Arcanist. They are all small differences though. All these Mega Inferno Bombs are quite great looking.

  13. Hello Zero, I already own Master Alchemist Ziggs but I recently got both Snow day and Pool party in crafting I was wondering if you think they are worth keeping?

    • Firstly, it depends how much Ziggs you play. If you constantly play him then three skins would add a good amount of variety. Conversely, if you rarely do then they won’t add much. The problem with discarding skins in crafting is that you would get random new ones and they may not be as good as these two are.

Snow Day Ziggs, in particular, is a great skin which effectively captures its concept. The execution is satisfying and the only problem it has is that it’s a legacy skin. If you like Ziggs, Snow Day would add a nice extra and some variety with regards to Master Arcanist.

Pool Party Ziggs is quite well done too but perhaps its attempts at comedy aren’t that appealing. The water particles are very good, though, so that the skin has something attractive to offer. We’d say it’s a third option if you see that you like blowing things up in different ways.

Neither skin is perfect but Snow Day seems better done. Regardless, Pool Party could be an extra beyond the extra, so to speak, with less appeal but still worthwhile. In the end, it depends on whether you would play the skins and if you are willing to risk getting other skins which you could like less or for champions you don’t play as much as Ziggs. These two skins won’t disappoint if you consider their best features. You might do better but also worse, there are some scary alternatives. If you like Ziggs then these skins are good options and worth getting.

  14. God it took forever to get that odyssay skin, esp that mission is way too hard on so many lvls. C’mon like i won only once in 25games.
