League of Legends: Olaf Skins’ Review – StrategyZero
Jan 172013

Olaf, the Berserker
Olaf, the Berserker

Olaf, the Berserker doesn’t have many outfits; also half are re-textures. On top of that, the skins draw from very specific topics that may not have wide appeal. If this isn’t reason enough to be blinded with rage then being a berserker should be. Therefore, to unleash Olaf’s fury with a suitable style, recklessly swing by his review and viciously strike all doubts down.

Forsaken Olaf
Forsaken Olaf Splash Art Forsaken Olaf Model
Category: Regular
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Olaf as a pale berserker dressed in dark clothes.
Model: New textures for Olaf and his axes.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: A hellish mess of blazing particles, fumes, chains and sharp rocks is the setting. The background gives an infernal feel but, in essence, it’s just a suggestion and lacks meaning. Olaf appears superimposed as if he’s been pasted. Not only is he unaffected by the lighting of the place but he also seems drawn by a different person. His aspect is clear, at least, but his muddy colours added to problems with proportions, like his bloated quadriceps and tiny axes, make the depiction disappoint. Only the axes have attractive colours but even the added energy doesn’t help much. In addition to this, Olaf doesn’t faithfully represent his in-game aspect. The clothes are alright but, red hair aside, the colours are completely different. This results in a hollow piece that barely works as a spotlight for Olaf.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Forsaken Olaf is a simple and unimpressive re-texture. The dark and subdued tones may be more realistic but the skin still looks monochromatic. It’s particularly notable as the same colour is used for different elements like both sides of the boots fur. Besides, the colours are so dark that details like folds or seams are almost unnoticeable. In the end, if you like this particular colour scheme it may be a skin worth considering. However, it hardly improves or even offers a good alternative to Olaf’s classic style.

Glacial Olaf
Glacial Olaf Splash Art Glacial Olaf Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Olaf dressed with an ice theme.
Model: Minor model modifications for Olaf and new textures for his axes.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: While the background fills the piece it’s actually empty. One can only see some snow-covered land but done in a simple and unassuming way. In one word, the setting is uninspired. Olaf’s depiction isn’t very attractive either. The pose might appear dynamic but it also prevents a clear look at his appearance. Besides, his axes and clothes don’t closely follow his in-game appearance; though the general idea is conveyed. The shading is uneven: from quite good in his vambraces to waxy for his skin or sketchy for his boots. All things considered, the basic premise of the piece is accomplished but only in a minimal way. As a spotlight, this splash art struggles to generate any excitement for Olaf’s glacial look.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Glacial Olaf’s modifications can be listed as: jewelled belt, ice horns plus blue and black colours. As such it shares some issues with Forasken Olaf, such as a monochromatic palette and concealment of details. The belt and horns are rather minor extras that don’t make up for the skins flaws. In the end, it’s mostly a re-texture so unless you really like the colours there’s little here to interest anyone.

Brolaf
Brolaf Splash Art Brolaf Model
Category: Legendary
Price: 1820 RP
Concept: Olaf as a student wearing a beer helmet and wielding cardboard axes.
Model: Major model modifications for olaf and new model for his axes.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: New voiceover for Olaf.
Splash Art: The background is quite clear, albeit a little diffuse: a fraternity house after a party. The multiple metal barrels seem like an exaggeration but it may intend to reflect berserker proportions. Olaf shares the dim colours of the background but offers a good look at his style. Regardless, the depiction seems to be a little polygonal and sketchy; a look at his feet makes it evident. On the whole, it sends its message but not in particularly engaging way.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Brolaf is a straightforward joke skin; therefore, if you like the joke enough it will be a skin that stays interesting for a while. On the other hand, it’s just Olaf wearing a t-shirt, jeans and flip-flops while the helmet is adapted into a beer friendly version; even his arm protection remains. The cardboard axes are a logical stretch as they stay as lethal as their classic metal counterparts. In fact, the look isn’t very funny or stunning so the voiceover should make the skin special. On that regard, the new quotes are funny but as every joke told multiple times they grow old. In conclusion, Brolaf is a skin that may appeal to dedicated Olaf fans or those that find the concept attractive. Regardless, it doesn’t do much to impress even if you find it appealing.

Pentakill Olaf
Pentakill Olaf Splash Art Pentakill Olaf Model
Category: Regular
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Olaf in the image of a hard rock drummer.
Model: New model for Olaf and his axes.
Particles: New particles for his abilities.
Animations: New walking animation during Ragnarok.
Sounds: New sound for Undertow and Reckless Swing.
Splash Art: As with other groups of skins, Pentakill has a splash art shared among its members. Realizing the consequences of such decision we find that the piece doesn’t really make up for it with astounding quality. The background is suggestive, at best, of twisted constructs between peaks. Add to that a rock platform with some engraved runes in some places and we have the whole of the setting. At the centre we find the famous metal band with all its members. As a poster their depiction is acceptable but nothing out of the ordinary. There’s the usual tough attitude and display of might but it all feels superficial. What might be serious is the arbitrary fog that diffuses parts of the bodies of the champions.
Concerning each champion we find that: Yorick seems strangely eager for an undead, Mordekaiser struggles to be noticed behind the other members and the flames, Karthus looks rather vivid and imposing, Sona aloof and distant while Olaf struggles like Mordekaiser at the back. For the most part, the portrayals don’t capture much of what makes each member unique in the band. Besides, in some cases, Sona in particular, they appear to be at odds with their natural personality. Ultimately, it serves as a band poster for Pentakill but as a splash art it doesn’t do much.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Pentakill Olaf provides an aggressive hard rock drummer style that while not exactly suitable for a battlefield doesn’t feel completely out of place. The model is well done despite the beard looking, but not being, glued to the body and the belt chain made with just a texture. Additionally, the new particles are added onto the classic ones making for a mixed effect that isn’t entirely convincing. The added sounds make sense but Reckless Swing is the one that stands out. Besides, the walking animation for Ragnarok is a nice extra. All things considered, Pentakill Olaf is a skin with quite a few nice touches that can be enjoyed by both hard rock and Olaf fans.

Marauder Olaf
Marauder Olaf Splash Art Marauder Olaf Model
Category: Regular
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Olaf as a dark, armoured warrior.
Model: New model for Olaf and his axes.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: The conception behind the splash art is actually quite good: a battle between Marauders and Wardens. In this instance we get to see the Marauders on the attack. The problem is that the monochromatic depiction of these champions is too unclear. For starters, the background essentially doesn’t exist. There are some shapes here and there that could be interpreted as rocks but of a proper setting we can only guess. The blurry presence of the Wardens is the only element that gives context to the action. The way they are displayed is understandable but they compete too much with the Marauders for attention.
The Marauders’ portrayal isn’t very good either. At a glance, it looks like Olaf is superimposed on Alistar but without much that links them. The idea is that they fight together but that isn’t conveyed. To top it off the individual displays are done with poses that occlude most of their bodies. Add to that the way in which the champions are placed in the action and we get to see little of them. Admittedly, the armours are detailed with nice reflections and multiple dents. However, such detail is only appreciated in the central area of the Marauders.
All in all, this is an ambitious splash art that fails at reaching its potential. What could be an exciting peek at a battle ends in a mess of blue tones that doesn’t show much and wastes too much space.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: The aggressive design of Marauder Olaf’s armour doesn’t leave much to the imagination: he’s a warrior to be feared. Combining fur, leather and sensible plates this is a Berserker that has equipped himself keeping in mind the need to maximize protection and mobility. The general feel that the armour gives is of a deadly enemy that has thought his preparation over. In that regard, the decorations, even if fantastic, are moderate but give the armour an appealing style. The legs do look boring in comparison with what’s present from the waist up but, at least, they seem practical. The new choice of weapons is a great touch. Instead of relying on his classic options Olaf wields a heavy mace and a hand axe. The mace has flangs with keen edges and the axe a spiked handle below a blade with an opening to catch enemy weapons.
All this attention to detail bears its fruits: Marauder Olaf is the skin that most fans of the Berserker may have been waiting for. It finally displays him as a dangerous and lethal warrior well prepared to trample over any opposition that could dare to face him. Thanks to the attractive design and much awaited concept Marauder is a skin that fans of Olaf shouldn’t ignore.

Butcher Olaf
Butcher Olaf Splash Art Butcher Olaf Model
Category: Regular
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Olaf as a dedicated meath enthusiast.
Model: New model for Olaf and his axes.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: With regards to a setting there isn’t much to speak of as there’s only a very blurry image of Master Chef Tahm Kench overlooking the meeting. There’s a paper lamp at the top and a table layered with all kind of delicacies. Still, the actual place is unidentifiable. Because of the multitude of utensils at the forefront a kitchen seems reasonable enough but the context eludes definition. There’s the possibility of a reunion of friends or a culinary competition but nothing concrete. The table also seems rather rustic, even like a slab of stone if the area near Olaf’s left hand is of any consequence. The food on display is also of uneven quality. The sausages and bread can look photorealistic and almost smell delicious while the crab pincer and the steak appear sketchy and unconvincing; other examples abound. The sashimi and its ingredients stand in the middle: cartoony but believable.
For the most part the cooks share the available space equitably. They are only visible from the waist up but they usually manage to transmit their speciality. Lines are clean and colours have different tones though they turn waxy when moving from left to right. Whereas Akali’s shading is sharp, Pantheon shows sketchy signs which Leona emphasises and Olaf only confirms. Additionally, there isn’t as good a connection between the cooks as there could be despite their proximity. Akali seems distracted, perhaps by the subtlety of a certain meat tenderiser, or maybe she’s simply staring vacantly into space; though that doesn’t seem to affect her concentration while chopping away. What she’s actually chopping isn’t clear but the result seems grated. Pantheon, with unexpectedly large rolling pin behind, is solely focused on admiring his masterpiece while Leona, escaping the encroaching fog, inspects the quality of the sausage’s grilling with satisfaction; as would be expected. Olaf pours all of his skill in making sure that the steak is tender and nice; a lesson the poor meat will have to learn. In other words, everybody is dedicated to their own activities so they could perfectly be on their own and each portrayal would be unmodified in the least.
All in all, this is a piece that crams as many champions as possible, a full team actually, into as little room as it can. While that means that some sacrifices need to be made it isn’t the main responsible for the uninvolved portrayal of cooks. Each one is solely interested in their own work and there’s no interaction between them. Given that the setting is as basic as it could be the splash art feels too straightforward and, ultimately, disappointingly simple. When all is said and done, it works as a shared spotlight for the cooks but it does nothing to make the presentation captivating.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Simple and much less sinister than a previous skin of the same name Butcher Olaf presents its theme without fanfare. Stained undershirt and stripped trousers make for basic clothing. The boots with protected tips as well as the cut-resistant mitten are essential precautions; much like the hat is if we forget the beard. The watch with a wide band says little. The linked sausages over the shoulders speak of carelessness but if we add the pork print on the back and the tattoo it could pass for passion. Overall, there isn’t much to say because there is nothing groundbreaking. The rustic look suits Olaf and adapts the concept.
The new axes are of mixed style. On one hand there’s a reasonably sized steak. Seeing the thickness of the bone it can pass for an improvised weapon. On the other hand we find an evidently oversized meat tenderiser which makes for a rather brutal weapon; matching the steak’s roughness too. A normally sized hammer would be too small to seem deadly and yet funnier than the exaggeration. It could be said that the tenderiser’s size seems proportional to the intention of proclaiming the joke.
All things considered, Butcher Olaf is a straightforward skin. It presents its theme clearly in a way that fits the Berserker and without wasting resources in anything beyond the basic. That also leaves the skin feeling simple as there’re only model changes of a particularly specific nature. The only digression is the size of the meat tenderising but that doesn’t help make the skin funnier actually. Still, it’s a skin that succeeds in what it sets out to do. It just doesn’t even try to go beyond that.

SKT T1 Olaf
SKT T1 Olaf Splash Art SKT T1 Olaf Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Olaf as a red-haired, regal axe-warrior.
Model: New model for Olaf and his axes.
Particles: New particles for his abilities and recall.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for his abilities, auto-attacks and recall.
Splash Art: There’s no real background or setting to speak of. At best, we could say that the champions are framed by a sky of undefined characteristics. What stands out is the setup of the piece. The ensemble appears like a group of superheroes in a composition that brings to mind the Justice League. Their general appearance seems to convey a pantheon of Greek gods, each with their unique symbolism. There’s also a suited coach that stands in for the ward skin. While it’s good that such an addition is made part of the team it’s fair to say that his look doesn’t fit that of the heroes well.
Each champion shares the spotlight making use of uneven parts of the splash art. Champions on the left tend to be able to make use of more space while those on the right see their lower bodies abruptly cut off. There’s empty room on the left which means that everyone could’ve made some extra room by advancing a bit forward. In addition to this, it’s clear that the centre of the piece has sharper lines and more vibrant colours; though tones tends to be subdued to the point that all metal seems dull. The blur is particularly noticeable towards the left and bottom areas which does the portrayals no favours.
The ornamented armour characteristic of each champion in their SKT gear is noticeable but with varying degrees of success. Individually, Zac looks too subdued and solid with little attention given to his armour; which is the only characteristic that sets him apart from Classic besides the new colour. Jhin’s upper body is quite explicit but the rest is barely visible and the depiction seems rather pedestrian. Nami barely emerges from the blur and shows too much of her naked back and too little of her armour so that it’s more notorious her familiar mermaid body than the new gear. Syndra almost appears in full with nice shading and a good demonstration of power; despite small spheres and dull colours. Ekko is only partially visible and while the new look is prominent enough that’s because of the clothes more than the portrayal effort to make him special, even if the pose is dashing and dynamic. Finally, Olaf closes the formation with good use of light and shade but a partial depiction with much blur and opaque colours that is only saved by the suitable stance. Not to be forgotten, KkOma looks sketchy with a cartoony look that doesn’t suit the more elaborate shading used for the champions; much as his suit doesn’t fit the classical style of the champions.
All added together, this is a splash art that makes a brief but impactful presentation of the champions thanks to its composition. The individual portrayals are marred by several issues so that each champion struggles to attract attention and even convey their actual look. For all that the piece does well in its setup there is an evident need for a good layer of polish to finish the potential of this splash art.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: While SKT T1 Olaf doesn’t depart far from the classic fantasy it does have a distinct style. The heavy, dark, gold-lined armour stands out with its eye-catching contrast of colours; supported by the red mane of hair and beard. In essence, it’s the Berserker with a more royal look that draws from classic high fantasy. It may not be original but it’s appealing. The axe’s faintly approximate the wings of the T1 logo which is a subtle and effective reference.
Particles all share a new golden look that stands apart from the classic ones. The general design is very similar to the classic ones but the new colours help make the abilities feel different. In most cases it’s the same design but the new colour and sometimes patterns make them different. For example, Undertow’s axe hits in a shower of sparks. Axe’s on the ground are signalled by the wing logo which works as a reference to the axe’s blades as well. Vicious Strikes shows some subtle gold sparks. However, the new semi-transparent lightning for Reckless Swing is quite eye-catching. The same can be said about Ragnarok’s golden glow which clearly displays the might of Olaf in a more explicit, magical way. The T1 logo in its beginning doesn’t work that well as it seems detached from the feasible design used elsewhere.
In terms of sounds, auto-attacks and Undertow have a high-pitched metal sound that fits the fine golden decoration of the axes. Vicious Striker goes with a straightforward low-pitched howl but Reckless Swing has a fantastic addition: thunder strikes with the lightning and then echoes as if dissipating into the distance; a great touch for any Olaf skin. Ragnarok employs an unimpressive but reasonable metallic vibration, like a large but quiet bell, that could’ve made more of an impact considering we are talking about an ultimate.
The recall is simply a reference at gaming with bad temper. It may also have extra meaning beyond the obvious but with regards to the skin, it doesn’t add anything to its identity.
All things considered, the model is quite good and some of the particles and sounds stand out. However, the classic core is untouched and only decorated with a clearer fantasy style. Too little’s done to fully realise a new identity for Olaf even if that is as a magical berserker: it’s only partially developed. As such, this is a skin with some good features but doesn’t add up to an impressive whole.

Conclusion

Olaf isn’t exactly what would be called a joke character; however, his skins are mostly funny or disappointing re-textures. The recommended skin is, undoubtedly, Marauder Olaf. It, finally, offers an imposing look that revels in his unstoppable berserker persona. It may be only a re-model but it’s very well done. Fans of Olaf should definitely consider Marauder.

Pentakill Olaf is the best choice as far as features go. It provides a good implementation of an interesting concept but it’s more of an alternative for metal fans than a natural choice. If you like the hard rocker style then Pentakill won’t disappoint. However, it’s evidently a digression that can’t fill the space still void of a true Berserker skin.

Butcher Olaf is a joke that actually is much more concrete than it initially would’ve appeared to be. Aside from the size of the hammer the skin presents is theme effectively and is very direct about its elements. This has the effect of making the skin appear too basic and also doesn’t display a funny side; the oversized tenderising is a poor way of adding to it. Still, for what it sets out to do, it works.

SKT T1 Olaf keeps the core of the berserker but in high fantasy style. The new gold-lined armour is rather interesting and works well with the red hair. Particles mostly respect the classic template but with the new colour and some new patterns they stand out rather well. Overall, it’s a good skin with the initial steps of a fantasy identity for Olaf that is never fully developed. For that reason, the skin has potential but uses too much of the classic persona.

Dedicated Olaf fans may consider Brolaf but if they don’t like the concept much they will simply find an unimpressive look and a set of jokes as voiceover added to Classic Olaf. As a legendary skin is long past its prime and much more is expected nowadays.

The cheapest alternatives are the re-textures: Forsaken and Glacial Olaf. Neither of them look particularly nice or appealing but as a simple change of colours they may find some use.

  1. I’ve seen the several Viktor requests, but please? haha. I’ll probably get Full Machine, but I want to know if Prototype is good aswell.
    Thanks in advance.

    • The review is coming soon, fear not.

Prototype Viktor is interesting but a bit crude in its mix of flesh and machine. Besides, it’s like a sketch of the final product, Full Machine, with Classic in between; though the latter meshes flesh and machine better.

If you really like it then you don’t really need anything else. However, give the skin a good look as it may put you off once you discover its rough edges.

  2. errmahgerd. you did a olaf review! I just asked like 2-4 days ago! thanks pal!

  3. I would appreciate it if you make a Nasus Skin Review ^_^

  4. Hello Zero, can you advice me or something about brolaf, I really want him but I doubt if it is worth the money..

    • The thing with Brolaf is that, for Olaf fans, it might seem the most elaborate skin he has. Pentakill is more polished and actually has more modifications; voice-over aside. Regardless, neither really carry the core berserker feel in an appealing direction. Instead, they simply put a berserker somewhere else.

The truth is that Olaf is in dire need of a skin that displays him as a different but deadly warrior. To an extent, both Brolaf and Pentakill are joke skins that don’t really bring out the best in Olaf; they are a diversion.

Considering that legendary skins don’t go on sale and are quite an investment, we would recommend waiting. It has been a long wait and there’s no telling how much is ahead but, currently, we wouldn’t recommend any of his skins as the ideal choice. Unless you really like the concept of Brolaf, it might be better not to get it. Because it only offers a new funny model and voice-over, nothing else.

Pentakill, for now, stands as the best but in large part because there’s nothing better; may also be worth waiting for a sale.

  5. Could you re-review the Olaf skins, Forsaken is completly different and Glacial has a new splash but thats all I know, but they have changed them a lot.

    • We’ve just given them another look and while a layer of polish is noticeable we don’t see much of a difference between the old and new looks. After all, it’s a texture re-balance but not even a texture upgrade. We think that our observations still apply as they are based mostly on the general themes and executions of the skins instead on details that the re-balance promptly refined.

In other words, the re-balance did make them look better but the problem is that what they offer is still too minimal and also uninspired. They both are mostly re-colours with names that imply more than the simplistic implementations can cope with. That’s not to say that they are horrible and that nobody should like them. They have something to offer but it’s very specific: a change of colours; in essence. Therefore, they don’t provide much despite the low prices.

  6. You guys really hate joke skins eh? They are some of the best skins in the game and you give them all 2 or 3 stars. Lighten up a bit.

    • We don’t hate them but we find that the novelty wears off quite fast. After all there are only so many times that you can tell the same joke and still find it funny. Besides, the main problem that we usually have with them is that they don’t communicate their message that well.

For instance, Forecast Janna is quite a nice skin. It doesn’t just tell a joke but also adds a nice personality for Janna. The problem is that, as a legendary skin, some of the additions could’ve and should’ve been better developed. It’s still a good skins but we found that it needed a little bit more work.

  7. Just curious Zero, do have a favorite Marauder skin? I think my favorite is Warwick. Love your reviews!

    • We think that Olaf’s and Warwick’s stand out more than Ashe’s and Alistar’s. It also matters the kind of skins that each has available as Ashe has some cheap but great skins; like Alistar. Regardless, the armour is rather well done in most cases. They usually have a few flaws and that is the main difference between the skins. Olaf and Warwick do a better job at joining the Marauder club in comparison with Ashe and Alistar.

  8. What do you think of the new glacial olaf splash art?

    • A clear improvement over the previous one. In the pursuit of dramatism it may exaggerate and not display Olaf as clearly as it should. Regardless, it’s a better portrayal in his Glacial guise.

      • As saied on the other larger post, you miss the concept. It is a nordic ice giant. And the new spalsh art displays exactly that.

        • It also does so in a simple and straigthforward way. For that reason, even if it’s not a bad splash art, it’s not particularly exciting either.

  9. Dear Zero, you should add the new Glacial Olaf splash art to the page, also what do you think of the new Butcher Olaf skin?
Thanks (I don’t really know how to write a formal letter XD)

    • We are aware of the new splash arts but we are delayed with updating them as we have to re-do their reviews. There were over a hundred splash arts updated so we are doing all we can to keep the site up to date; on top of the bundles, skins and sales.

The new Butcher Olaf seems like a simple joke. It has some appeal; especially as Olaf hasn’t that many skins. Still, there’s ample room for impressive skins for the Berserker.

      • Thanks! I’m an Olaf main and I really want a good Olaf skin, marauder is cool and so is pentakill but I just want something that is 1350 or legendary that is REALLY cool. Maybe something like Lumberjack Olaf (I think it would be fun) or something serious like prehistoric udyr (where he is like a caveman).

        • The truth is that Olaf has been too neglected and he hasn’t impressive skins in his wardrobe. It’s a pity as he’s a fun champion to play. Who doesn’t like an unstoppable berserker? Regardless, the current options are quite limited.

  10. Hi, I just wanted to ask you: what skin is your highest rated yet? Which skin(s) are must haves for you? Keep up the good work!

    • We’d say that five star skins are the best ones that you can find in League. We don’t easily give such a high rating unless a skin manages an exceptional result. You can find all the best skins by ordering skins in the Skin List by rating; by pressing ‘Shift’ you can order by secondary column criteria.

  11. In ur opinion what is the best skin for olaf? Butcher or Marauder? They’re both 50% off though so having a little bit of trouble picking

    • For something fitting for a berserker and also within the fantasy of the game Marauder is the better choice. Butcher is a joke that settles for little. It achieves it but wasn’t ambitious to start with. Technically, their are equivalent: both re-models. However, the concept of Marauder is more interesting and viable for Olaf. If a simple joke is enough then Butcher delivers.

  12. I main Olaf since I started playing LoL 5 years ago, I got the Marauder skin at hextech crafting… and I sold it. And also, while there is many people playing the berserker after the presence he have had lately on tournaments, I didn’t almost have seen any of them with this skin.

    You overestimate it.

Just because Olaf rages while fighting an armor with two extra horns is a must have? Fits with the persona? Yes, he looks more savage, but seems like you ppl don’t know how berserkers were prepared to battle and didn’t read Olafs lore neither.

In the other hand, Glacial Olaf in game it may be a mere recolour, but you completely miss the concept. The skin is based on the ice giants from nordic mytholgy. Those who the gods fights. And after how you have given some high scoring to other skins (others champion’s also) based on the feelings, when you smash squishi enemys with this skin it really makes you feel like you’re some huge and unbeatable force. For those who knows what’s the skin about, it achieves it’s goal. And with the add of a new splash art, I think it deserves a bit more of consideration.

I think the Pentakill is the best skin, because the details and the new animations/sound effects. Marauder is ok, but if you don’t mind too much about LoL’s fighting theme Butcher is better. Brolaf is also fun but is too expensive. And about the recolours, Glacial is more than just that because of it’s theme getting directly related to vikings and can be the most enjoyable to someone who likes nordic myths, while Forsaken is really forgettable.

    • Actually we agree with many of your points but perhaps we don’t see the good and bad as strongly as you do. To start with, we think that Marauder is a skin that Olaf fans shouldn’t ignore not that it’s a must have. It’s straightforward but suitable for Olaf while skins like Pentakill and Butcher don’t fit the fantasy of League that well. Regardless, in technical terms they are superior to a strict re-model.

With regard to Glacial Olaf we find the splash art too straightforward even if effective. Still, it doesn’t really matter when in game. The new textures rely too much on the same colours and while the idea of Jotun Olaf is good the execution is simplistic. We agree that the skin is good on paper but in practical terms it disappoints.

Ultimately, the main problem may be that Olaf doesn’t have really great skins. There are re-textures, re-models, re-models with a few extra touches and an old legendary skin. There’s nothing that approximates the great implementations that other skins offer. That is the real problem so while some skins are better than others in certain aspects we don’t really see one that is the must have for Olaf.

    • It’s good and, considering Olaf’s skins, perhaps one of his best skins; provided we ignore the price. For the price tier SKT T1 Olaf belongs to, 1350 RP, we expected much more. It’s still a good skin, especially among Olaf skin’s, but there’s nothing really special about it as there should be.

We’ll have a review ready after the skins are released.

  14. Is Brolaf worth it now? I have it as a shard and i’ll need to buy a box or two to have enough essence for it. What do?

    • Brolaf is an old legendary that offers very little. Perhaps an eventual visual upgrade could make it fit the legendary label but, right now, it doesn’t deserve it. Only the new voice-over hints at anything legendary so unless you like the concept of the skin and are fine with an underdeveloped skin it will be a letdown.

On the other hand, if you disenchant the shard you can get a random skin and, to be fair, there’s worse. The question is how much you like Brolaf versus the chance of something better or worse. On the other hand, you could do better than Brolaf. It’s not a matter of price but of what the skin delivers, right now: it’s little.

Crafting is a bit like gambling so it’s a risk to take whether to keep the shard or roll the die again. The question is: what are you willing to lose for a chance to the unknown?
