League of Legends: Tristana Skins’ Review – StrategyZero
May 102012

Tristana, the Yordle Gunner
Tristana, the Yordle Gunner

Tristana, the Yordle Gunner is a girl with a passion for explosions. She’s easily identifiable by her little figure which contrasts with the size of her weapon of choice: the cannon. Her skins show quite some variety in clothes selection as well as in cannon designs. To know more about Tristana’s trigger-happy styles blast off right into her skins’ review.

Riot Girl Tristana
Riot Girl Tristana Splash Art Riot Girl Tristana Model
Category: Promotional
Price: Free for Facebook fans
Concept: Tristana with pink hair, gold armour and mail plus several stickers.
Model: Moderate model changes for Tristana and her cannon Boomer.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: This splash art is a little tricky to analyse. On the one hand, it’s a simple re-colour of Classic Tristana. On the other hand, it’s a very well painted piece with good use of colour and perspective; in spite of the fact that a quarter of the piece is a simple patch of black. In the end, it should be taken as what it is: a simple modification of a good piece whose quality is heavily reliant on its source. Even in the realm of splash arts, re-colours are a possibility and while good looking, it’s a letdown.

Conclusion: With a casual style and some fancy stickers on Boomer Riot Girl Tristana aims for stylish looks of the superficial sort. The clothing is simple but comfortable, the kind to wear off-duty. The goggles are all show with those spikes and the earrings add some matching decoration that follows the general style; like her pink hair. Her cannon Boomer is modified to look like a hextech device with a certain antique air but modernized with the stickers.
All in all, the classic Tristana look is clear but the changes instil a more casual feel that goes well with Tristana’s carefree personality. While it’s not a skin that redefines her it adds something simple but nice to her style. Therefore, it’s a nice alternative to have around.

Earnest Elf Tristana
Earnest Elf Tristana Splash Art Earnest Elf Tristana Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Tristana dressed as a Santa elf.
Model: Major model changes for Tristana and new model for her cannon Boomer.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: Earnest Elf Tristana is a piece with background and foreground working in unison. The background sets the appropriate setting and mood of the piece. It’s a little blurry but the falling snow makes the effect reasonable. Tristana looks quite cute and suitably childish while holding a present; sitting on top of a chimney. The cartoon style is fitting and well done: the clothes show complex folds, different textures and her equipment clearly displays metal and wood. Consequently, this is an excellent splash art with great quality and a distinct style; one of League of Legends best.

Conclusion: With an appealing new outfit and decorated cannon Tristana certainly looks like a Christmas elf. The pointy shoes with matching fur coat and large pointy cap tipped with a bell all are characteristic of an elf’s look. Added to Tristana’s cartoony aspect the concept is finely realized. In practice, it’s a change of clothes and cannon but it’s also well done. Therefore, it you like this yordle to display her Christmas spirit then Earnest Elf Tristana is a good choice.

Firefighter Tristana
Firefighter Tristana Splash Art Firefighter Tristana Model
Category: Legacy, Legendary
Price: 1820 RP
Concept: Tristana dressed as a cartoon fire-fighter.
Model: Major model changes for Tristana and her cannon Boomer.
Particles: New water effects for her abilities and auto-attack.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: New sounds for her abilities and auto-attack.
Splash Art: Big black patches seem to be a staple of Tristana’s splash arts. In this piece it serves to contrast the light coming from the fire, presumably behind Tristana. However, a background of actual flames or some sort of building ablaze would’ve added a lot to the context. Despite the simplistic background, Tristana is very well drawn with great colouring and lighting. It’s a bit strange then, that the quality of the water leaking from her cannon doesn’t match her depiction. In conclusion, a very nice portrait of Tristana that could’ve, or even should’ve, had a better frame.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: With plain but effective changes Tristana becomes a firefighter with a penchant for explosive, high-pressure water. The classic look of hat and uniform as well as the cannon turned fog nozzle work in tandem with her yordle physique to represent a comical firefighter. However, the fire extinguisher on her back strikes as an idea that seemed funnier on paper; a tank for a breathing apparatus would’ve made more sense.
The addition of water-based particles and sounds help bring the theme to life and adds a distinct style to the skin. Unfortunately, there’s nothing else and while both particles and sounds are rather good a legendary skin is expected to go far beyond this point.
In conclusion, Firefighter Tristana is a nice skin with a disproportionate price. The cartoon firefighter style is appealing with a correct model and effective particles and sounds. However, even as a retired, legacy skin the price is a huge obstacle. If you like Firefighter Tristana then get it on sale.

Guerilla Tristana
Guerilla Tristana Splash Art Guerilla Tristana Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Tristana dressed as a guerrilla fighter.
Model: Major model changes for Tristana and her cannon Boomer.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: To the right of a compulsory patch of black, Tristana leans against her cannon, holding a torch in the jungle. The background is a good complement but it looks sketchy, drab and blurry. Tristana is well depicted but there are some issues, especially the area of her face closest to the torch. Regardless, it has adequate lighting and reflections that salvage the quality of the piece. In summary, a good base that seems not to have been sufficiently exploited to make a wonderful splash art.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: With commando clothes, a red headband and a huge cannon Tristana only needs to exclaim that this is her war to make Rambo her surname. The modern aesthetic of her clothes give the Gunner a feel that is only a little tougher as the cartoon base remains. The cannon looks sober but is appealing even if it can look simple. Actually, perhaps a bazooka would’ve been a better choice than a, perhaps, old cannon; though it makes sense for a guerrilla to use whatever they can.
All added together, Guerilla Tristana, bad spelling an all, is a cute version of a tough, cannon-wielding action heroine. Unfortunately, the price is too high for just model changes so, while it has some appeal, it’s a skin that’s better avoided until it’s more reasonably appraised.

Buccaneer Tristana
Buccaneer Tristana Splash Art Buccaneer Tristana Model
Category: Regular
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Tristana dressed as a cannon-wielding pirate.
Model: Major model changes for Tristana and new model for her cannon Boomer.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: It could be said that the absence of a black patch of nothingness is a good indication of the potential of this piece. In actuality, the piece is quite well rendered with excellent use of colours, reflections and an superb background that perfectly frames the action. The background is far from simple with ample amount of details showing the destruction onboard. Tristana looks great, from her strands of hair to the cracks on her cannon; even the fire coming from it is complex. Buccaneer Tristana is undoubtedly and awesome piece and one of League of Legend’s best splash arts; at last.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Thanks to an effective choice of clothes Buccaneer Tristana nicely captures the style of a corsair. The attractive and colourful clothing effectively represents the classic depiction of a pirate; which is cemented by the unavoidable eye-patch and a couple of handy rum bottles. Her cannon Boomer follows suit by recreating the appearance of the ship counterpart of the era. Still, it looks somewhat dull and uninteresting despite befitting the idea.
All things considered, Buccaneer Tristana is a modest but attractive skin that offers a decidedly cartoony but appealing pirate lady. The idea could certainly be elaborated further but, for its price, it’s a great choice.

Rocket Girl Tristana
Rocket Girl Tristana Splash Art Rocket Girl Tristana Model
Category: Regular
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Tristana wearing a jumpsuit and visor and wielding a rocket launcher.
Model: Major model changes for Tristana and new model for her cannon Boomer.
Particles: New particles for her auto-attack and abilities.
Animations: New Rocket Jump animation.
Sounds: New sound for her auto-attack and abilities.
Splash Art: The background is a simple cloudy sky and even though there’s a good amount of detail on the cloud formations there really isn’t much to see. Tritana appears to the right as if rocket-jumping. Her portrayal is adequate: the rocket launcher is clearly visible in all its technological glory as well as her apparel. The jumpsuit is alright but the rocket in her back is almost completely covered; still it’s a logical compromise. Tristana’s face looks rather good with an ample smile and bright eyes. Overall, it’s a good splash art and serves as a portrayal but it doesn’t actually do much to stand out.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Changing cannonballs for rockets and adopting a vintage futuristic aesthetic Rocket Girl Tristana is an updated take on the explosive enthusiast yordle. The outfit isn’t very elaborate but is practical even if the rocket on her back appears precariously attached. Just as a visor replaces her goggles a rocket launcher takes the place of her cannon so Boomer becomes a modernized source of explosions.
Speaking of which, the new auto-attack particles clearly show the rocket theme as well as refining the explosive aspect a bit. The sounds do the same but they are a less noticeable. Nevertheless, both struggle to stand out versus the polished particles and sounds brought by the visual upgrade: the difference is there but is not always evident.
In the end, Rocket Girl Tristana is a great skin for fans of the former Megling Gunner and explosions. The visuals and sounds receive a different style but the core remains as appealing as always.

Dragon Trainer Tristana
Dragon Trainer Tristana Splash Art Dragon Trainer Tristana Model
Category: Legendary
Price: 1820 RP
Concept: Tristana as a dragon-wielding trainer and Boomer as her pet, Riggle.
Model: Major model changes for Tristana and new model for her cannon Boomer.
Particles: New particles for her abilities, auto-attack, joke and taunt.
Animations: New animations for her dragon and long hair as well as Rocket Jump, Explosive Charge, Buster Shot, auto-attack, critical hits, standing idle, walk, high speed run, emotes, tower channel, death, respawn and recall.
Sounds: New sounds for her abilities, auto-attack and recall. New voice-over and quotes for her abilities, placing wards, recall, buying certain items, beginning a match, destroying a tower, respawning and joking or taunting near certain champions.
Splash Art: The foggy background intends to give a sense of awe at the vast expanse of sky with floating rocks and soaring dragons. The idea is actually conveyed but in a rather unimpressive way. So, while the message comes through there’s little awe in it. Regardless, the context is clear and meaningful and there’s quite a bit of detail though all rather diffuse.
On the foreground we find Tristana alongside her dragon, Riggle. The cute and even inoffensive reptile looks adorable yet his burning maw hints at the power that such a creature commands. The colours are a bit strange as the body looks much flimsier than the head but, being a baby dragon, it’s sensible; to a point as the effect is quite pronounced. Tristana points in wonder to the dragon’s delight and so the interaction between them is established and the bond between them demonstrated. The fact that Tristana is quite well coloured is also good but the deeply saturated colours don’t work well in all places. From the neck down, she looks great. Her face, on the other hand, looks made of rubber and the lower perspective makes her features alien and not as familiar as one would like.
When we add it all together we find that this is a rather good splash art. It makes a good presentation of Tristana and her dragon before a relevant context. The portrayals are attractive and the bond between them is presented. There are some qualms to be had but nothing major so it stands as a fine presentation card for this unique duo.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Part of the appeal of Dragon Trainer Tristana is that it captures the childhood delight of forming a unique bond with one’s pet. In most actions the relationship between Tristana and her dragon, Riggle, provides the skin with a distinct personality. The new animations are the main changes responsible for such a feat but the stylized flames also contribute by keeping everything eye-catching and light-hearted. Between the two Tristana is the most classic as she’s merely had a change of clothes. Her cannon fully transform into a dragon and that largely compensates for such a simple approach. Although, the dragon doesn’t eliminate the need for a more inventive take on Tristana and that can disappoint.
The particles have a cartoony feel that fits the playful feel of the skin. While nothing is striking everything is attractive with a clear and consistent style. Besides, they don’t compete with the relationship between Tristana and her dragon and sensibly take a supporting role. One thing that doesn’t convince is that the flames lack impact and so, despite the abundance of fireballs, the explosions don’t feel significant; especially as they share the classic look with new flames on top.
It’s possible to say the same about the sounds but there aren’t any relevant additions. Instead everything is adapted to softer sounds that better fit the flames. That lack of power echoes the problem that the particles have. Overall, each attack appears smooth and harmless despite having a rather nice feel.
As mentioned before the animations make a rather good work at establishing the bond between Tristana and her dragon. A big part of the relationship is set in her emotes and recall but it’s also present in other animations though to a lesser extent. The general cartoon-like feel of the animations suit their nature perfectly. However, her actual abilities barely look different from the classic ones; though there are differences. In practice, when the time comes for action, the dragon is no different to a cannon, which is a missed opportunity. At least, the auto-attack is different enough which is important being Tristana’s main weapon.
All things considered, Dragon Trainer Tristana is a playful skin with a child-like approach to the interaction with a pet. The idea is wonderful but doesn’t appear as evocative as it should and doesn’t communicate it well via the most natural actions. The cartoon aspect is a good fit and contributes to make the skin appealing yet it can also make it less deadly. The result is certainly attractive and there’s a lot on offer yet it all doesn’t come together to be more than the sum of its parts. In fact, it seems like the bond struggles to manifest itself and, being the main message of the skin, is a noticeable flaw. Fans of the Yordle Gunner will find in Dragon Trainer Tristana a nice skin with an appealing personality that doesn’t surface as much as it wants to.

Bewitching Tristana
Bewitching Tristana Splash Art Bewitching Tristana Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Tristana as a cauldron-wielding witch.
Model: New model for Tristana and her cannon Boomer.
Particles: New particles for her abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for her abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Splash Art: A grey, cloudy sky restrains the Moon, or a timid Sun, from reaching the diffuse gothic architecture of the town below. Curved lines meeting in acute angles line wood walls in a contrast of colour that presents a, sadly, diluted vintage style. From one of these houses, a witch is ejected by the power of her magic. The setup is certainly attractive but it’s always permeated by the dullness of the watered-down background. Only a startled bat manages clear depiction out of the visible bunch.
Tristana’s portrayal is in clear opposition to the background. There’s an abundance of details, colourful surfaces and a fine use of light. While the pose occludes her dress and the cauldron her legs a general, though brief, idea of her look is possible. The pointy hat might be too darkly shaded and the effect of the magical concoction not strong enough. Regardless, these are only minor points in a portrayal that shows effusive delight in its realisation.
Seeing how nicely Tristana’s classic and Bewitching personas are combined in one simple but appealing Rocket Jump the result is certainly attractive. The background sets a moody tone to contrast her depiction and, while effective, the setting is too relegated to the point of disappointing with its lack of detail. Regardless, as a presentation card this is a great splash art.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: The cartoony look of Bewitching Tristana incorporates traditional elements with a different take on her identity. Instead of a yordle the skin mixes inhuman feline features with classic witch elements to realise the magical humanoid aspect. This clever way of adapting the champion manages an interesting combination of horror and humour. The clothes’ appealing 17th century style stays fictional but it’s a stylisation that suits the Gunner’s personality: practical but good looking. Her cannon, Boomer, is the one that receives the most drastic transformation. Turned into a cauldron it becomes the explosive source of all her magical prowess.
With that in mind, her auto-attack has an interesting style of volatile fluid that is stressed by Rapid Fire. The other abilities have a distinct appearance of mystical smoke dotted with brilliant sparkles. While both fit the theme the magical fumes seem a bit disconnected from the cauldron concoction that is at the base of the skin. The sounds acquire a similar dichotomy of fluid and smoke. They support the visuals well but aren’t noteworthy. Furthermore, the abilities are consistent individually but together they lack the cohesion that could be expected. The new recall seemingly connects concoction, smoke and feline aspects into a whole. It’s clear but not as effective as it should be.
Overall, Bewitching Tristana is a skin that cunningly adapts the Gunner into a cat-witch. However, there isn’t enough cohesion and the resulting style, while appealing, doesn’t connect all elements into a whole identity. The idea is certainly good and the result nothing short of charming but it fails at coming together as more than the sum of nice individual features. Bewitching Tristana is a good skin with much to like but not rounded to be great.

Omega Squad Tristana
Omega Squad Tristana Splash Art Omega Squad Tristana Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Tristana as a veteran cannoneer from elite corps.
Model: New model for Tristana and her cannon Boomer.
Particles: New particles for her abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for her abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Splash Art: The background is a diffuse forest with a blast behind and incoming fire. Said fire bounces off the armour of the tank which shows a rustic sometimes sketchy surface. While the explosion is clear it’s also simple so that there’s little relevance in the background except for presenting a setting. What does matter is the worn out aspect of the photograph which may be a memento of the scared little yordle that takes cover near Boomer; how such a picture was taken in such a moment is better left unexplained, training hopefully.
Tristana stands tall against the attacks and practically enjoying the moment. The lines are clear and shading is quite good. Except for her boots one can get a clear look at her clothing and how light affects it; though the explosion behind seems to affect her little in any way. Boomer, her cannon, is relegated a bit and while the muzzle with its electricity catches the eye the rest is shadowed by a simple lack of details. Tristana visor-monocle or cyborg-eye also lacks vibrancy for what should be a lit and glowing; which is strange given the good use of light elsewhere.
Overall, this is a nice splash art that doesn’t aim to impress but to show a time where a rookie was learning from his betters. As a photograph of some time ago it’s a glimpse into a past that may not have been particularly good but that perhaps wasn’t as grim as the future; at least to the rookie.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: With a bit to owe to Guerilla we find that Omega Squad Tristana follows the military tradition with a uniform that looks a bit casual and a large beret that look quite cute on her. The coat looks stylish, the trousers casual like jeans while boots and gloves appear as extensions of the nearby clothing. Still, with her small frame her clothes aren’t to be seen much or given importance in the model. The monocle-visor or cyborg-eye looks dull and lacks any indication of how relevant it is to her. Boomer transforms into an energy cannon that appears more like a weapon made for humans than an oversized yordle design. The Tristana mantra of the bigger the explosion the better doesn’t seem to apply here.
Particles are an extension of this. Auto-attacks, like the abilities are nicely done adapting explosions and projectiles into energy balls surrounded by streaks. There’s consistency in the entire skill set but also homogeneity. Abilities tend to feel the same simply divided into shots and explosives; combined for the ultimate. Nothing is bad looking but everything appears too streamlined and soft without showing much in the way of chaotic destruction. It’s as if visuals are designed to appeal without excess. A good touch is the new indicator for Explosive Charge, though.
Sounds follow the example set by the particles. They adopt energy-based sounds that are rather too soft as in the auto-attack. Abilities have more energy and a bit of extra personality as the energy vibration of Rapid Fire demonstrates. Rocket Jump, like Explosive Charge and Buster Shot sound similar with energy blasts that support the visuals well but that lack real punch. As said before, there’s a perceivable lack of power in her, otherwise, explosive arsenal.
The recall is a show of classic Tristana. Taunting enemies to come at her as she stands above the incoming fire to return in kind would fit any of her skins. Much as she exits without breaking a sweat and ready for another round of shots it’s a fitting recall that exposes how superficial the skin’s identity actually is.
In the end, Omega Squad Tristana, much like Rocket Girl, is a direct but appealing change of clothes and cannon because Tristana is as enthusiastic about a big explosion as always; even if they aren’t actually present. The energy based attacks are interesting but feel weak in both look and sound. There’s nothing bad about the skin but much that can be improved like a better defined personality. Actually, as a member of the Omega Squad there’s nothing really different or novel about Tristana or with regards to such a esteemed group. That leaves the skin far from being a bad option but it does feel superficial and lacking in significant features. For fans, there’s cheaper and just as good though not exactly in this flavour.

Conclusion

Tristana has very different looking skins available at all price ranges, unfortunately the quality of the skins also covers all available ranges. Rocket Girl Tristana is the recommended skin as it keeps her core while updating the visual aspect with a futuristic style. Both visual and aural sides are adapted with rockets and though they don’t shine as much as they can the result is certainly worthwhile.

Buccaneer Tristana is also a good alternative: great concept and execution at an affordable price. Guerilla Tristana is not a bad skin but it is overpriced; which is something difficult to overlook considering what it offers. Earnest Elf is a fine option for those wanting to add some Christmas spirit in explosive yordle form. Finally, Firefighter Tristana is a skin with a distinct appeal and too high a price; if you like it then catch it on sale.

The legendary option is Dragon Trainer Tristana. The main attraction of the skin is the child-pet bond between Tristana and her dragon, Riggle. That relationship isn’t clearly communicated through the habitual activities yet permeates the skin with its presence through a suitable cartoony style. The result is quite appealing but doesn’t always make the most of the interaction between Tristana and her dragon. For dedicated fans of the Yordle Gunner it still can be a rather fine option.

Bewitching Tristana is a skin with an appealing interpretation of the Gunner. The feline witch idea along the cauldron as a weapon is a clever choice. Unfortunately, the concoction and the smoke feel disconnected and there isn’t a link that unites the attractive individual aspects of the skin. Therefore, while Bewitching Tristana is a charming skin it’s also one that doesn’t finish its ideas in full.

Omega Squad Tristana is an acceptable skin that feels superficial. The model is fine and the energy attacks look and sound distinct but weak. The recall exposes how this is the same good, old Tristana with just a change of gear. For fans, there are cheaper options though not exactly in this style. For anyone looking for a skin with depth then Omega Squad Tristana will sadly disappoint.

  1. Awesome reviews!

    Do Janna next please. 🙂

  2. Glad that you like them, Janna added to the list.

  3. I was wondering if you could make Firefighter Tristana available again?

    • Unfortunately, we can’t influence which skins are made available as we aren’t affiliated with Riot.

However, Firefighter Tristana is a legacy skin which means that it can return on legacy sales. By the end of last year there was a huge sale that included Firefighter Tristana. Therefore, by the end of this year it could be made available again on a similar sale.

We are sorry we can’t help more but with some patience and attention to sales you might find Firefighter Tristana available again.

  4. Hello Zero, do you think Rocket Gril Tristana will be on sale any time soon?

  5. Is riot girl tristana good?

    • It’s only a re-texture that adds some different colours. Considering that it’s free there aren’t many reasons not to get it. However, if you don’t have a Facebook account you aren’t losing on much.

  6. uhm zero actually firefighter tristana has a water spilling effect with her ”w” i think?

  7. Was so happy that rocket girl is dicounted right now.
Just bought it beacuse for 487 rp its impossible to pass up

  8. I hope you’re getting ready for the Tristana VU 🙂 and it looks like Firefighter Tristana is getting a few more features (new model for ult/E).

  9. Idk why there are two of my comment

    • Don’t worry, it’s just another of cyberspace’s mysteries.

    • Sometimes wierd stuff happens, like the format of comments not working correctly or we don’t see a comment that’s staring right back at us. Don’t worry, it’s just another of the mysteries of cyberspace.

  10. Is your reviews on the Tristana skins gonna get updated? Or are you guys still judging the new skins?

    • We are a bit delayed with visual upgrades but we intend to review Tristana’s skins. The review isn’t updated yet but we’ll try to update it fully. Lately getting skin images has been more difficult that it should but hopefully we’ll find a way to do it.

  11. Gonna be reviewing her VU?

  12. When will u make a skin review for the new tristana. I cant really decide which skin to get D:

  13. Are you updating for the new Tristana rework? I play Tristana a lot and I have Rocket Girl Tristana… is it still good?

    • Yes we will update Tristana’s review. We’re just a bit delayed but we will update as soon as possible. From what we’ve seen Rocket Girl Tristana is still a great skin.

      • Hey, Zero! What made Rocket Girl TRISTANA lose a star? Before her VU it was a perfect 5.

        • Indeed, but the visual upgrade made Classic Tristana’s look much more polished and the new Rocket Girl particles and sounds don’t stand out as much as they used to. It’s still a great skin but doesn’t stand as far from Classic as it used to. Truly a pity as the VU was the ideal opportunity to add something extra to the skin to make it more special; considering how much Classic improved.

  14. Soon?

  15. guerilla is not misspelled, its supposed to be like a revolutionary guerilla (little war) group costume. Kinda like the cuban revolution or the other communist revolutions in latin and south america. shoot and run, shoot and run.

    • We agree on parts of the concept but the exact spelling of the word in Spanish is ‘guerrilla’. Besides it’s not really a little war but a skirmish. The most common meaning is that of a light troop, perhaps unofficial, that is usually identified as fighting for the freedom of the people or a social revolution.

  16. Guess theres a new rocket jump animation for rocket girl Tristana!!!

    • Indeed, there’s a simpler animation for the Rocket Jump; thanks for the information. It’s possible that the classic animation was improved with the visual upgrade and the old one was left on the skin. Not bad but Rocket Girl has potential for something more interesting.

  17. Wow, I really like the Earnest Elf skin. You don’t mention this, but it looks like it changes her auto-attack bullets into pinecones. Do they always bring it back for the holiday season?

    • From what we know and have just checked those are Tristana’s classic auto-attack particles. As far as we can tell, Earnest Elf only offers model changes. Regardless, it’s a nice skin and should return for Snowdown like the other legacy skins from that event.

  18. Zero, what do you think about the Dragon Trainer Tristana? For me I think it looks fun. Instead of her usual cannon, she’s using her pet dragon that spits fireballs. Although the particles kinda let down, but the theme is somehow different than her others which kinda appeals to me.

    • We agree, the approach of the skin is quite good but it isn’t impressive. The main feature is the relationship between Tristana and the dragon which has to come through in their actions. It seems like a good skin but the bond between them should be exploited more.

  19. I really wanna see Dragon Trainer Tristana review as soon as it releases

  20. Zero btw you also measure the skin by RP right?

    • Certainly, it’s one thing to get a lot of features for a low price and another to pay double or triple that price. If we ignored the price then the most expensive skins will easily come out on top in features. Sometimes those extra features aren’t significant or don’t work as intended. In other cases, the skins are good but they don’t have enough features to justify their price. It’s all a matter of value, getting enough for what one pays. After all, skins are far from cheap so they have to be satisfying.

  21. So Nice Reviews , thanks zero keep up the good work . I just wanna ask of what legendary skins is great to have ?

    • Glad that you like them.

Most of the recent legendary skins are quite good though there are a few exceptions. You can find the best legendaries at the Skin List. Just press on the ‘Price’ header and then hold the ‘Shift’ key and press on the ‘Rating’ header to order skins by price and rating. That way you can easily see the best legendary skins.

We haven’t found any legendary that is so good that deserves five stars but there are many at four stars. Those at four stars we think offer great features and themes despite having a few flaws here and there.

Take into account that a legendary skin is a big expense so be sure to buy one only if you like and play the champion a lot and you really like the skin. They are simply too expensive to gather dust but the best ones should encourage you to use them thanks to what they have to offer.

  22. Dragon Slayer trist pls

  23. Can you use a pbe account to review pls

    • Actually, we don’t have a PBE account and we don’t think we have the time to be constantly giving feedback about stuff knowing very well that it’ll be ignored. After all, once something reaches the PBE it’s final and only there for bug-fixing.

At any rate, we prefer to review skins once released so that we can assess the final product. Besides, not relying on the PBE means that we stand on the same ground as any paying customer.

  24. Where is dragon trainer tristana review?

  25. Hello, I’m a big fan of your reviews, I don’t think you should focus so much on the skins prices though. I feel like your 1350/1820 skins reviews are a bit unfair, but maybe it’s just me.
Keep up the good work friend.

    • Perhaps, it’s difficult sometimes to gauge how good a skin may be for the price. After all, the skin may only offer as many features as a 975 RP skin but be priced at 1350 RP while doing a great job with what little is has. We agree that 1350 RP is a difficult price point to gauge, at least for now, but we usually find that when a skin deserves a very good rating is because it has something special to offer. There are many skins that are good but that, ultimately, lack that extra step to make them special.

With legendary skins our stance is more strict. They are special skins that are expected to go where others can’t. Besides, the price is quite high and the early sales that they’ll receive don’t change that much. In this particular case we think that, because of the great expense, a skin has to be great. If it isn’t then it’s not up to the legendary label. Lower prices can be arguable but legendary and up really have to impress. It’s why the exist.

  26. Zero, by reading your review on Dragon Trainer Tristana I felt that the 1820 RP price might be a little high. However, according to Riot’s new sales policy, this skin should go to sale by 1350 RP sometime between the end of March 2016 and the end of May 2016. With that price, would this skin be a good pick, or would it still be a little high for what the skin has to offer?

    • The problem with the underdeveloped bond between Riggle and Trist when in battle would remain. Of course, the least you pay the better but we think that the problem with the skin goes beyond just price. It’s a matter of incorporating the best aspect of the skin in the most relevant actions. We aren’t sure that reducing the price helps in that regard but makes the purchase more palatable. If you like it then the sale is the best time to catch it. After all, the skin does have some distinct features to offer.

  27. I’m thinking in buying a Tristana skin in this winter event, but i’m really indecise, like, if i buy Dragon Trainer or Firefighter (and probably will be in promo) i will get another random skin for free, but Rocket Girl is also a good option (as stated in your review) so i want to ask, in your point of view, what would be the best one, cost benefit wise and the best one excluding the price?

Another question, not about League at all, is this site made by just one person or a group of people? It’s just completely awesome, i probably have seen almost all the reviews and everyday i see some of them again. Thanks for doing this amazing site and keeping it updated <3

    • Thanks for the kind words. There’s a lot of work in the site and more than one person contributes. We’ll certainly keep working hard.

The main thing between the skins you mention is probably what you’re looking for. Rocket Girl is the best all rounder: fitting concept, nice looks, good price, and satisfying to use. Firefighter is nice but a skin to get only on sale. It has nice particles but it’s lacking for a legendary. Regardless, it has a unique style to offer. Dragon Trainer is a fine skin but the real asset is the relationshipt between Riggle and Trist. The problem is that it’s more evident during the emotes and other animations than in actual battle.

None of the skins is bad and we don’t think that you’ll get disappointed with any of them if you like what they offer; consider Firefighter on sale only, it may not qualify as a legendary anymore also. We would recommend Rocker Girl on sale. It’s the safest bet and there’s a lot to like. If you like something different then discounted Firefighter could be an option if taken for what it is: an old legendary. Dragon Trainer is for the dedicated fans: nice but has some issues.

If you want a cheap option then Buccaneer Tristana is a fine re-model. On sale, it’s a fitting re-model but a low price. It largely depends on what you’re looking for in the skin. They all have something nice to offer and the prices are mostly reasonable.

  28. With the winter event coming, and the buy a legendary and win a mysterious skin thing, what you would recomend people to buy, Firefighter, Dragon Trainer or Rocket Girl? To complete, i love all of your reviews, readed almost all of them, and i still do (everyday i read some of them, but everytime a new skin is out i look here first for the review) and last, please stay doing this awesome job with the site ^-^

    ( hope it doesn’t double post… )

    • Don’t worry about the extra post.

As we mentioned, Rocket Girl is the safe, all round good skin. Firefighter is something different, a bit expensive but distinct. Dragon Trainer is for dedicated fans, offers a unique bond between Riggle and Trist but it’s not as developed in battle as it deserves.

  29. This is mildly off topic, but would you ever consider doing a Ward Skin review, or do you think it’s not work it? The reason I’m asking is because I’m considering getting the Riggle ward skin, but I’ve already gotten attached to my Riot Fist Bump ward.

    • We don’t see too much complexity with regards to wards but we do consider doing a review or an overview; at least. The thing with wards is that you can just check a video about the ward and get everything about them as there’s little interaction with them. You see how to place them and how they go out and that’s it. Skins are more complicated and as the price increases they can get difficult to analise.

For the moment, ward skins aren’t a priority but we’d like to review them. What we can recommend is to check a few videos to check what ward skins offer. It should give a good idea about what you leave behind when warding.

  30. Hey Zero, I’m wondering, since Earnest Elf is currently on and it’s only 520, if I should buy that, or wait until the 17th of December or 16th when they are re-releasing Firefighter Tristana for one day, for 910- thing is, they are also bringing back Alien Invader Heim on Christmas Day, but if I get Earnest Elf I will still have monies for another 975 skin down the line without getting more RP. Should I just stick to Earnest Elf, or is it worth getting Firefighter and waiting just because of its greater rarity?

    • More than rarity, as both are legacy and so on equal terms, Firefighter has new water particles for her abilities whereas Earnest Elf only offers model changes. There’s a clear difference in price but also no what they offer. We’d recommend checking which skin you actually like the most because with the legacy sale both manage to have reasonable prices.

Alien Invader Heimerdinger is also a re-model only but also has rather high price; certainly a skin to get on sale. Firefighter is the one that offers the most from the three and Earnest Elf is more reasonable in its price than Alien Invader. Regardless, it all ends up with what you like.

There’s little point in getting more of something when you are actually interested in something else. Take the reviews as a guide but keep in mind which champions you actually play and which themes you like the most. Better than spending little is to spend in something worthwhile; because you’ll really enjoy it. Don’t worry about exclusivity or rarity as that’s all relative, centre on what you’d like to play.

  31. I got the earnest elf skin in one mystery gift, I really like it,ts really cute ^^
    Nice reviews

    • Glad that you like the reviews.

Earnest Elf is certainly a humble but appealing skin. It may be only a re-model but it has its charm. As a present it’s certainly nice.

  32. If guerrila was cheaper, like 520RP, do you think it would be 3-4stars?
Cuz i find that skin pretty adorable

It would be great if legacy skins with this potential get particles, at least 975RP legacy skins that are just a re model 🙂

    • We agree that at 975 RP skins need to be more than a good re-model nowadays.

Guerilla is a clear case of a skin that isn’t exactly bad but that doesn’t deliver as much as it asks for. The price should definitely be lower and then the rating would surely rise. By how much depends on the price according to what the skin offers. In this case, three stars at 520 RP seem reasonable.

  33. Since there are gonna be new splash arts for Trist’s and Trundle’s skins will you review them>

    • We are reviewing the new splash arts but rather slowly. We want to update the assessments with detail and with over one hundred new splash arts we find ourselves before a sky-high pile of updates to make. We will definitely, eventually, update all reviews and get all new splash arts. However, patience will be necessary because there’re literally hundreds to take into account.

  34. If fire fighter tristana was 975 RP, what would your comments on it be?

    • During the annual Legacy Vault sale Firefighter Tristana’s price goes down to 910 RP; usually at the end of the year. In that case we think it’s a fine skin for fans of the Gunner. It’s certainly not at the level of a legendary skin but for that price it offers enough. It’s not a groundbreaking skin but the water effects are nicely done and the theme comes through well enough.

  35. Some of the splash arts of the skin are updated now. I hope you can be able to change it.

    • We are delayed with the splash art update. More than a hundred splashes were changed and that means a lot of reviews need to be re-written. Still, we’ll try to update everything as soon as we can.

  36. IT World be good if you update the Splasharts of a few champs because many of then are old

    • We are delayed with the splash art update due to focusing on new content. Also, over a hundred splashes were updated and we have to rewrite their reviews. It’ll take a while but we’ll update everything.

  37. Just want to note that if you look really closely, the Earnest Elf Tristana auto attacks are pinecones

  38. Can you update the tristana splash arts? Riot updated them and they look awesome now.

    • We are slowly updating all the reviews with the new splash arts. More than a hundred splash arts were updated in total so we are progressively doing so. New content always has preference which has delayed us as well as some unfinished work on the site. Regardless, we are advancing, slowly unfortunately, but we haven’t stopped. Sorry for the inconvenience it causes.

  39. Hey Zero, Guerilla Tristana’s splash art got updated! 😉

  40. Hi Zero. I want to buy a tristana skin but i dont know what to choose between the omega squad and dragon trainer skin ?.. what do u recommend?

    • Truth be told, both are skins that could be better. We’d recommend Rocket Girl Tristana, on sale, as it’s a skin that is almost ideal for the Gunner. From the two you mention we probably prefer Omega Squad Tristana, on sale. Let’s get the sale part out of the way, it not only saves money but it makes skins with some problems less of an issue. It lessens the impact, so to speak.

With regards to what the skins offer we find that Dragon Trainer is too based on the out of combat animations. While on the frail, it mostly feels like any other Tristana skin. To a point Omega Squad shares that problem as it’s rather conservative. Regardless, the electric-styled explosions have their appeal and stand out; even if they feel weak. There’s no doubt that Dragon Trainer can be enchanting but the charm doesn’t translate equally in all areas. In that regard Omega Squad is a bit more even.

In the end, it’s all a matter of personal preference and you should buy the skin that you like the most. We’d suggest not to rush it. Dragon Trainer won’t see a discount and Omega Squad will take a good while for that. In the meantime, check some videos of the skins in action and see how they fare in-game. Try to get as much information as possible about the skins to make the best decision for you.

  41. Hi Zero, I don’t know whether to buy Omega Squad Tristana on sale or Super Galaxy Shyvana. Which do you prefer?

    • We prefer Super Galaxy Shyvana. It has a nice concept that is well presented by the execution. With Omega Squad Tristana we find that the skin is too based on classic with the energy attacks being the most salient feature. In other words, SGS makes an effort to realise its theme beyond the basic while OST ends up rather superficial.

That’s not to say that there’s nothing to like from OST but when compared to SGS the latter is more attractive because of the breadth of the changes. We’d recommend a sale in any case as the prices are quite high.

  42. Bewitching or Dragon Trainer? I have gotten Bewitching from a Hextech Chest unexpectedly but I was aiming to buy Dragon Trainer Tristana…Should I be satisfied with Bewitching or is DTT better?

    • Assuming you are a devoted Tristana player to justify a legendary skin and that price is not the main issue it depends on what you are looking for. Dragon Trainer Tristana is a skin with most of the work given to animating the new dragon-pup. The animations capture the feel of having a trusted pet but most of them are to be seen outside of combat as they are emotes or recall. When fighting, the skin actually seems rather modest for a legendary.

Bewitching Tristana is a skin that is rather straightforward but the particles are nice even if inconsistent. If you can easily get it through crafting then it’s less of a problem the entry barrier to get the skin. Being legacy and expensive doesn’t do the unimpressive result any favours.

Strictly speaking, despite being legendary, DTT isn’t better. It’s a different skin that has its identity but, when the time for battle comes, doesn’t impress. Bewitching is a bit cheaper, perhaps easy to get if you have the chest, but it could’ve been more developed. Still, it’s has some nice features to offer.

      • What makes Rocket Girl Tristana better than Bewitching?
I just got both of them randomly through crafting and now I’m confused which one to use more xD

        • You should use more the skin you like the most. That said, we find the effects on Rocket Girl Tristana more convincing than those of Bewitching. Bewitching’s are more distinct but they lack the impact of a good explosion and that’s a relevant aspect of Tristana. Granted, Rocket Girl shares the explosive theme with Classic but the rockets end up being a great, even if unoriginal, fit for Tristana.
