League of Legends: Mordekaiser Skins’ Review – StrategyZero
Dec 062012

Mordekaiser, the Master of Metal
Mordekaiser, the Iron Revenant

Mordekaiser, the Master of Metal has two interests that get reflected in his wardrobe: destruction and rock. To sate the former he has a few armours with different decorations, to appease the latter he has Pentakill. Yet to suit this iron man with the best looks you may want to interrogate the children of the grave or take a look at his skins’ review.

Dragon Knight Mordekaiser
Dragon Knight Mordekaiser Splash Art Dragon Knight Mordekaiser Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Mordekaiser wearing a rusted, gold-engraved armour and matching mace.
Model: New textures for Mordekaiser and his mace Nightfall.
Particles: New gold particles for Harverster of Sorrow.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: An arid scene of reddish rocks and sand pretends to give a setting but is just a simple frame that fills space. Mordekaiser’s depiction gives a good idea of his look but tends to look brighter than in-game. Furthermore, the proportions aren’t very convincing: the body seems too big and wide for the size of his head and limbs; the mace looks passable yet maybe a little too big. Overall, it’s a splash art that fulfils its duty as a portrayal but nothing more.

Conclusion: Dragon Knight Mordekaiser is a simple re-texture that doesn’t stray far from Classic Mordekasier. However, the golden decorations provide a nice contrast to the rusted metal; which makes the aspect quite attractive. As a skin, it’s nothing more than a re-colour but it’s a good one.

Infernal Mordekaiser
Infernal Mordekaiser Splash Art Infernal Mordekaiser Model
Category: Regular
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Mordekaiser wearing a dark armour decorated in red with matching mace.
Model: New model textures for Mordekaiser and his mace Nightfall.
Particles: New red particles for Harverster of Sorrow.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: Not much is visible that could be interpreted as background: the grey sky and red ground just cover the empty spaces. Mordekaiser’s portrayal isn’t bad as it stays rather faithful to his in-game look; though the size and placement of certain elements isn’t exact, it works. The mace shares the spotlight with him due to a striking yet oversized depiction. At least, it helps to take attention from the strange look of his legs; especially the right one. In general, it’s a piece that serves as a portrayal thanks to good shading and dynamic composition but it ultimately gets dragged down by its flaws.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Infernal Mordekaiser tries to give a dark and fearsome look to the Master of Metal, yet there’s little contrast between the colours so the overall look is rather dull and unattractive. In fact, it isn’t an interesting alternative so unless the specific colour palette appeals to you, there isn’t much here that Classic Mordekasier doesn’t do better.

Pentakill Mordekaiser
Pentakill Mordekaiser Splash Art Pentakill Mordekaiser Model
Category: Regular
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Mordekaiser as a hard rock guitar player.
Model: New model for Mordekaiser and his mace Nightfall.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: As with other groups of skins, Pentakill has a splash art shared among its members. Realizing the consequences of such decision we find that the piece doesn’t really make up for it with astounding quality. The background is suggestive, at best, of twisted constructs between peaks. Add to that a rock platform with some engraved runes in some places and we have the whole of the setting. At the centre we find the famous metal band with all its members. As a poster their depiction is acceptable but nothing out of the ordinary. There’s the usual tough attitude and display of might but it all feels superficial. What might be serious is the arbitrary fog that diffuses parts of the bodies of the champions.
Concerning each champion we find that: Yorick seems strangely eager for an undead, Mordekaiser struggles to be noticed behind the other members and the flames, Karthus looks rather vivid and imposing, Sona aloof and distant while Olaf struggles like Mordekaiser at the back. For the most part, the portrayals don’t capture much of what makes each member unique in the band. Besides, in some cases, Sona in particular, they appear to be at odds with their natural personality. Ultimately, it serves as a band poster for Pentakill but as a splash art it doesn’t do much.

Conclusion: Pentakill Mordekasier is a skin that is able to keep the traditional silhouette and imposing look of the Master of Metal while adapting him into a guitar player. The hard rock aesthetic is effectively conveyed though armour could be considered too elaborate for a rocker; except in the case of glam rock. Additionally, the mace is adapted into a guitar that looks like an axe; which is a clever option. To sum up, Pentakill Mordekaiser is a nice skin that doesn’t shine nor disappoint with its implementation.

Lord Mordekaiser
Lord Mordekaiser Splash Art Lord Mordekaiser Model
Category: Regular
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Mordekaiser wearing a lavishly decorated and segmented armour decorated with horns.
Model: New model for Mordekaiser and new model plus shining orb for his mace Nightfall.
Particles: New glow for Mace of Spades.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: Stone for walls and ground are easily distinguished but ill suited to provide more than a frame. In fact, the background seems undefined as it could easily be a cavern with an opening or a dusty canyon. Nonetheless, Mordekaiser’s portrayal stands higher with good use of colours and reflections. Unfortunately, his legs look rather dull and the plates don’t look right in places; like his shoulders and cuirass. Moreover, the mace isn’t completely visible and his gauntlets don’t have matching styles; like his boots. In spite of the multiple issues, this piece manages to serves as a portrayal but asks for a good share of tolerance.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Lord Mordekaiser’s concept tries to present an elaborate armour that boasts about the power and resources available to the wearer. Unfortunately, the style is plagued by absurdity so the armour feels impractical and ineffective. The sabatons look too heavy and dull, the spaulders and gauntlets too ornamented, the cuirass too thin while the tights and abdomen seem unprotected and plain. Furthermore, the codpiece and matching poleyns, especially the former, are an annoying exaggeration; plus the cape looks like a joke. It’s practically strange to find that the mace and helmet actually have reasonable, yet heavily stylized, designs; the mace also has an appealing glowing effect. In conclusion, Lord Mordekaiser is a skin that suffers from an outrageous design that doesn’t feel out of place yet isn’t exactly attractive.

King of Clubs Mordekaiser
King of Clubs Mordekaiser Splash Art King of Clubs Mordekaiser Model
Category: Regular
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Mordekaiser dressed in a club suit motif.
Model: New model for Mordekaiser and his mace Nightfall.
Particles: New golden particles for Harvester of Sorrow.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: In spite of the extremely blurry background one can get an idea of the setting. The throne room is inexplicably foggy and its architecture can only be guessed at but, at least, there’s a setting. In the throne we find the King of Clubs with his golden armour glinting under the sunlight. On the stairs, we find the elegant but distant Queen of Diamonds; not far from the sinister Joker. On the other side, in the darkness we find a knave discretely hiding his presence. In the foreground, a confident aristocrat greets us as we approach the room.
In general, each champion receives a portion of the spotlight and, mostly, characteristic traits are noticeable. Perhaps Shaco should’ve been in the darkness while Twisted Fate charmingly received the viewer or presented the court to us. Besides, Mordekaiser doesn’t say much sitting in the throne and doesn’t really strike as imposing; except for his title.
Ultimately, the splash art presents the champions in a rather clear way in an appropriate setting. The background could’ve been clearer and some champions could’ve been better presented. Still, considering how many champions vie for the viewer’s attention, this is a piece that manages to give each a relevant place that is supported by the others.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Sturdy metal gear, golden plates and a heavy club accompanied by a lavish cape, a refined crown and helmet: King of Clubs Mordekaiser surely conveys the idea of a warrior monarch. The broad armour might have gone a bit too far as he seems bulky and slow more than an unstoppable colossus. Still, he manages to instil fear with is brutal ways which the blunt club definitely suits.
It could be said that it’s a straightforward skin but it’s also effective. Mordekaiser’s style is recognizable as well as the layer of royalty mixed on his aspect. It leaves the feeling that a few extra additions would’ve helped keep things consistent as his abilities rely on the classic style; which doesn’t fit well. Nevertheless, King of Clubs Mordekaiser is a very nice re-model that fans of the Master of Metal would enjoy.

Conclusion

Mordekaiser’s skins aren’t exactly prime examples of quality and the recommendations are a victim of that. The recommended skin is King of Clubs Mordekaiser. It accomplishes a good balance between practical armour and regal decoration. The skin could’be been better developed but for its price it offers a nice aspect.

Lord and Pentakill Mordekaiser are acceptable alternatives for sheer lack of better options. The former is ridiculous and the latter a passable joke but that’s actually the best that is available. Both are re-models at too high a price as neither tries hard to develop their theme. They are passable but leave a sour taste of incompleteness.

Finally, the re-textures are an uneven affair. Infernal Mordekaiser isn’t even an alternative, it may be cheaper but it isn’t even as good looking as Classic Mordekaiser. Dragon Knight Mordekaiser manages a nice mix of colours but its legacy nature which means that it won’t be as easy to catch as regular skins.

  1. Thanks for the great skin reviews, even though I bought Lord Mordekaiser a long time ago, it was still very interesting to read.

When I first saw Lord Mordekaiser’s splash art, I just fell in love with it. The ingame look may look a bit wierd, but its still worth it 🙂

    Thanks again.

    • Glad that you liked the review.

The idea of a regally armoured Mordekaiser is actually quite good, but the execution is unfortunately messy; still it’s passable.

      • Yes, I belive so too. Without the red burning effect on his mace, I wouldn’t really care for it.

Now, I hope that Nautilus and Nocturne are next on the review list.

Thank you for all the info that this site provide.

        • Agreed, it could and should have been better.

Nocturne is coming soon, thanks in no small part to his Eternum persona, and Nautilus was just bumped in the list.

It’s a pleasure, we’re glad that the information is useful.

  2. Once more another great review. I never buy a skin without at least attempting to consult strategy zero. I liked and agreed with the majority of your critique with the exception if infernal mordekaiser. I felt that the dark tones of red along side the black and greys of the piece give its nice lively yet gothic feel whic the original skin simply doesn’t have. However, I completely agree with your assessment of the splash art, it is a dissapointing piece utilizing the perspective and color of the macs to draw attention away from the more sketchy areas of the piece such as the background and the legs. I’d give it at least a 3 out of 5 for the satisfying in game look. Thanks once more for your investment of time on this website!

    • Thanks for the kind words, we’re glad that you find the reviews useful.

You make some valid points about Infernal Mordekaiser. However, while the dark aesthetic is interesting the red decorations are hard to spot; even more than the ornamentation on his classic armour. Therefore, the style isn’t bad but is even less clear than his classic one; at a glance it seems like just Dark Mordekaiser.

Regardless, we don’t discard giving an additional, deeper look to Infernal Mordekaiser in the future. Subtle changes make for subtle results so we could’ve missed something. Thanks for the alternate view.

  3. Also If I am right some skins being rated 3 stars can be better that the one with 4 stars due to the splash art and price . But all in all it all comes to personal choice but none the less nice I give me thanks because I wouldn’t dare buy a skin without consulting either you or this site .

    • Glad that you find the reviews useful and questions, along with feedback, are always welcome.

Indeed, the final decision should account for personal preference because if you like a skin you’re bound to enjoy it despite its issues. Regardless, we aim to provide a guide so that you are as well informed as possible and are able to make conscious choices.

The problem with splash arts is that they make for good presentation cards but aren’t ultimately used much expect for loading screens. Even if a skin has a formidable splash art if the actual model and additions aren’t good it won’t be enough to salvage it.

Conversely, price is taken very much into account as they are products. A good price can definitely make a passable skin a good purchase as, in the end, it’s a matter of getting one’s money’s worth.

  4. ME THINK MEEDEEKAASER EZ GOOOOOD CHARACTER>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> YEP !!!!

  5. There are a few errors, Lord Mordekaiser’s Q particle matches up with his mace. Also the Dragon Knight and Infernal Mordekaiser’s Creeping Death particles have yellow and red color.

  6. The new King of Clubs Mordekaiser skin has new particles for his E to match his new mace design.

  7. Greetings strategy zero,

You said Dragon Knight Mordekaiser and Infernal Mordkaiser both had new particles on Creeping Death but since his rework it s called Siphon of Destruction. This led me to confusion. Hope you are gonna change it. Btw i love your quality reviews? Hope you have a good afternoon

  8. why didnt he got any new animation and sound? weird:>

    • We guess it could be that old skins aren’t worth investing in them. Interesting after launch wanes and they simply move on to new skins.

We think that skins could be re-launched after they are upgraded with new features whether after a visual upgrade or simply improving a specific skin. It could rejuvenate the skin and there could be renewed interest in the product.

Riot’s approach has been to release new skins non stop instead. It may be working for them because there are thousands and there’s no sign that they’ll change anything about the process.

  9. Hey guys, I just wanted to point out that King of Clubs Morde has a new golden particle on his W.

    • True, tough the effect seems borrowed from Dragon Knight Mordekaiser there is a new effect for King of Clubs which wasn’t there. Thanks for the headsup.

  10. Will the rework be reviewed?
