League of Legends: Kayle Skins’ Review – StrategyZero
Oct 182012

Kayle, the Judicator
Kayle, the Judicator

Kayle, the Judicator is an armoured angel dedicated to justice and massive swords. Her skins faithfully reflect her fervent love for armour and huge blades with different takes on her classic equipment. For the right look to dispense her righteous fury rely on her skins’ review.

Silver Kayle
Silver Kayle Splash Art Silver Kayle Model
Category: Exclusive (Collector’s Edition)
Price: Not applicable
Concept: Kalye wearing a silver and blue armour with matching sword and blue wings.
Model: New textures for Kayle and her sword.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: In a whirl of light, particles, feathers and who knows what else an angel appears in shining armour. As a setting the background is so brief that it seems like filler. Kayle looks better but only because a clear view of her silver armour is allowed. With regards to her depiction, the colours are alright but the proportions wrong all around. This makes the piece functional but hardly an exciting presentation card.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Silver Kayle is a nice and simple re-texture of the Judicator. While it’s nothing out of this world it does use an attractive colour palette. The ensuing silver and blue colour scheme works quite well and gives Kayle a different but still familiar appearance. Based on its availability it’s mostly a collector’s item yet it has enough quality to be, at the very least, interesting.

Viridian Kayle
Viridian Kayle Splash Art Viridian Kayle Model
Category: Regular
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Kayle wearing a grey-green armour with matching sword and dark grey wings.
Model: New texture for Kayle and her sword.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: Before a cloudy starry sky an angel silently stares back. The background is full of colour but, ultimately, isn’t more than a nice frame. Fortunately, the framed portrayal is quite good. Kayle’s displayed with well defined lines and nice shading; though some plates look like tin and the panache like wax. The pose is interesting with its subtle flames and repressed power. However, the gigantic wings are a bit of an exaggeration; even if they give a fitting dynamic air to the portrayal. In the end, the piece works despite its idiosyncrasies and makes for a nice preview of Kayle’s Viridian style.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Viridian Kayle is just a re-texture but it’s more ambitious than the usual ones. The grey and green colour scheme stands apart well from Classic Kayle yet it preserves her traditional style. The dark wings stand out thanks to the mute metal hue as well as the green decorations and clothes. All things considered, it isn’t a striking skin at all but for a re-texture it does enough and rather well.

Unmasked Kayle
Unmasked Kayle Splash Art Unmasked Kayle Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Kayle wearing a rusted golden armour without helmet plus dusty grey wings.
Model: Minor model changes for Kayle and new textures for her sword.

Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: For all intents and purposes this piece lacks a proper background. Maybe there are clouds and a bridge or maybe they are just random strokes of the brush. Kayle’s portrayal is nice: the golden armour glints under the sun while her finely delineated face and flowing hair are eloquent representations of her angelic nature. Conversely, the wings appear too yellowish, unlike in-game, and unexplainably diffuse. On top of that, her waist is compressed in such a way that the armour is either oversized on top or crushing her lower body. Actually, from the waist down there isn’t much to see as it’s simply omitted. Even the sword is forced to fit with a pronounced forward perspective that makes it look too short. In addition to this, the helmet appears sketchy and made of painted wood instead of gold. Besides, her right hand seems too small and her left forearm too short and the vambraces seems too bulky. To sum up, an uneven piece that does its job but should do better.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Unmasked Kayle is a skin that simply became obsolete with the release of Battleborn Kayle. The only characteristic worth highlighting is the lack of a helmet which exposes Kayle’s beautiful features. The other changes are as minimal as they could be: new textures that darken the golden armour and sword as well as her wings. The effect of rusty gold and dusted wings is appealing but also inconsequential due to the general similarity with Classic Kayle. In the end, Unmasked Kayle is a skin that isn’t worth its price except for collectors or dedicated Kayle fans.

Battleborn Kayle
Battleborn Kayle Splash Art Battleborn Kayle Model
Category: Regular
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Kayle wearing a lavishly ornamented armour and wielding a dual blade sword.
Model: New model for Kayle and her sword.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: The grey hues of a stormy sky become splattered with the pristine white of feathers. The contrast of colours seems to make them glow as they depart the wings of an angel like a trail of petals behind a bride. So, clouds, feathers and an angel, nothing else. There truly isn’t much setting to speak about but at least the frame is passable. The focus of the piece is obviously Kayle and fortunately she does look great. The armour is very well drawn with excellent shading that combines dark and light tones to equally show its hardness and polish. The sword is a good match but the lines bordering it are too pronounced. Finally, Kayle’s face is beautiful, perfectly befitting an angel, and her wings look alright. In conclusion, a very nice splash art that stands above the norm but needs a little more polish to excel.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Battleborn Kayle is a skin that shows the Judicator with a classic battle angel style. The armour is exquisitely ornamented and the sword elegantly designed; it sure looks as equipment befitting an angel. Moreover, Kayle’s beauty is displayed with the lack of a helmet yet a tiara or other decoration would’ve been appropriate. Her wings also receive a new elliptical shape but being based on the original Classic Kayle’s proportions they appear too small and short to support her; much like her uncomfortable boots’ toes. All things considered, Battleborn Kayle is a great skin that gives a satisfactory and attractive appearance to the angelic Judicator.

Judgment Kayle
Judgment Kayle Splash Art Judgment Kayle Model
Category: Exclusive (Season 1 Reward)
Price: Not applicable
Concept: Kayle dressed with a dark suit and hood decorated with an avian theme.
Model: New model for Kayle and her sword.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: A splash art suffering from uneven quality is nothing and so this piece hardly comes as a surprise. The background is an original stormy and Kayle just poses before it. There are other problems: Kayle’s wings are too large and the lower part of the piece seems rather sketchy; in particular the swords tip and her boots. However, as we move up the quality increases: her upper body is clearly delineated as well as the shoulder ornaments. Moreover, her eyes shine with holy fervour and the perspective used to display her sword is almost flawless. In summary, a piece with obvious problems that has elements to be quite good but ends up being just passable.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Judgment Kayle is rather unique in that it’s the only skin that gives clothes instead of armour to Kayle. Still, the appearance is befitting of Kayle’s traditional implacable style. The dark clothes are mute yet appealing and the decoration, while impractical, is finely designed. The hood shadows her visage so at to reinforce her stern look which matches the austere and dented aspect of her sword. Additionally, the contrasting tone of her wings as well as their high-lift shape makes them, along with the whole of the skin, very appealing. Therefore, Judgment Kayle is an atypical but attractive skin for Kayle and an appreciated present for Season 1 veterans.

Aether Wing Kayle
Aether Wing Kayle Splash Art Aether Wing Kayle Model
Category: Legendary
Price: 1820 RP
Concept: Kayle as a hi-tech battle angel.
Model: New model for Kayle and her sword.
Particles: New particles for her abilities, auto-attack and high speed movement.
Animations: New animations for her abilities, auto-attack, walking, recall, death, capture, emotes and wings.
Sounds: New sounds for her abilities, recall, critical hits and new voice-over.
Splash Art: The background is limited to dark clouds and a glimpse of light among them. It may seem fitting but it mostly fills space rather than provide a setting. Kayle displays a dynamic yet overloaded stance: she seems to be advancing forward while slashing and charging a blast; simultaneously. Still, she looks very nice thanks to clear lines and good shading. Unfortunately, light reflections aren’t well depicted: the glow of her sword, hand or wings don’t affect nearby surfaces. Additionally, her wings seem to dissolve in the clouds, especially the right one, and her face looks quite different to other depictions. In the end, it’s a nice portrayal of Kayle that serves its purpose but doesn’t awe as it should.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Aether Wing Kayle is a skin with its ups and downs: it has its brief moments of brilliance but fails at feeling truly inspiring. Firstly, the concept is a mixed bag that fuses technology with mysticism and ends up constantly crossing between the realms of fantasy and sci-fi but never fusing them together. Its elements not only feel confusing but they are also constantly clashing between both themes.
Secondly, the model is rather simple for a hi-tech angel: the wings stand out but the rest of the suit is rather unassuming. Her sword deserves special mention for being just a stylized chunk of iron instead of an example of future technology. Moreover, the visual effects let down, especially the quiet and plain particles used for her abilities. The animations fare better but her simple flying motions seem lacking.
When Aether Wing Kayle manages to impress it does a good job though it doesn’t compensate for its flaws. For instance, definite highlights are the excellent recall, the simple but pleasing auto-attack swings, the glow of her sword during Righteous Fury and her disappearance when dying.
All things considered, Aether Wing Kayle is a skin with an uncertain concept plus an implementation that fails at effectively mixing two often conflicting themes like fantasy and sci-fi. It’s not a bad product and can be enjoyed if its flaws are accepted. However, for a legendary skin, it simply doesn’t show the cohesion and visual flare that such a product deserves.

Riot Kayle
Riot Kayle Splash Art Riot Kayle Model
Category: Promotional (available during events)
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Kayle as a riot policewoman using a flying device.
Model: New model for Kayle and her sword plus blinking emergency lights during Righteous Fury. New drones for her recall.
Particles: New particles for Righteous Fury.
Animations: New animation for her wings and recall.
Sounds: New sounds for her auto-attack, Righteous Fury and recall.
Splash Art: The background is chaotic, with a storm as the unique setting. It’s fortunate, then, to find Blitzcrank providing his support in a depiction that, despite its blurriness, is attractive. With identifiable colours and great use of lighting he’s a great addition. Considering Blitzcrank’s look Kayle’s impressive portrayal doesn’t come as a surprise. The quality and clarity of the lines and shading is impeccable. It’s also worth noting the excellent use of light and well chosen pose: both dynamic and useful to see her appearance. It has to be admitted that not everything is perfect. Kayle’s wings are not completely displayed and a tad diffuse, like the electric sword. The background could’ve been better and there are some instances of unnecessary blurriness. Nevertheless, the piece gives a striking glimpse at Kayle and Blitzcrank entering into action. That’s why, it’s worth including among League of Legends’ best splash arts.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: For a skin that isn’t exactly realistic Riot Kayle’s appearance is quite believable. The uniform is practical and well protected while the helmet is reasonably designed. The wings make for an attractive flying device thanks to the animated propellers; which also match the recall drones. The baton-sword is a bit exaggerated, like the emergency lights on the shoulders, but it’s a measured stretch. Besides, during Righteous Fury the siren is low and the electricity is eye-catching. So, the design is stylized but in a reasonable way. On top of that, Kayle’s personality is a good match for a tough cop style; with some added gadgets. In the end, the skin comes together in a nice and appealing way. It might not give an impressive visual display but it’s certainly a charming and fitting option for the Judicator.

Iron Inquisitor Kayle
Iron Inquisitor Kayle Splash Art Iron Inquisitor Kayle Model
Category: Regular
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Kayle as an armed officer from an order.
Model: New model for Kayle and her sword.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: This is a piece that has a distinct style thanks to its coloured lithographic print aesthetic. A closer look reveals that the three subjects seem to acquire colour progressively; perhaps through some mystic process. The result means that the background doesn’t really present a setting. It does, however, give context to the illustration in an evocative manner.
The shading on each champion is soft enough that stands closer to watercolour than oil. The detailed highlights and shadows, the effective transitions to sketch form and the sensible distribution in the piece lets each champion stand out; without ignoring either their personality or their new identity. Whereas Nocturne appears eerily supernatural, Kayle looks penitent in her divinity and Singed practical and ready. Each champion reflects themselves but also appears as different parts of a cohesive whole; perhaps as if they were horsemen of an apocalypse.
Thanks to such a clever presentation, exquisite quality and unique style this is a piece that grabs attention and doesn’t let go. In technical terms, half of it is a draft and the other half only a trio of partial portrayals. However, each element conspires with the others to reveal the different facets of the piece. This makes it a splash art that transcends its limitations by far and clearly stands as one of League of Legends’ best pieces.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Wearing a richly ornamented uniform and wielding a sword that echoes such splendour Iron Inquisitor Kayle is a skin that takes advantage of how much looks can tell. The clothes appear to be dark leather with believable folds finished with golden decorations which elevate them beyond a mere uniform. The ceremonial attire makes judicious use of gold. Cloth tips, waistband with fixed lamp, spaulders and wings guards, over the patagium and wrists, are as much adorned as they are protected with gold. Still, the clothes don’t restrict to a couple of tones. The brown boots also have golden terminations. The asymmetrical and delicate use of gold makes for a fine addition to the crown which lies behind the hood. The face seems to become an inscrutable mask of white finished with red tear trails. The sword shows much less restraint: a solid piece of gold serves as grip and guard as well as holding the blade. It appears too large and cumbersome to be held single-handed but who knows about the actual alloys used. What is clear is that it shows symmetrical dents on both sides; which seems peculiar.
The result is an appearance that strikes as fantastic despite the judicious use of golden decorations. The effect seems overly dramatic but, at the same time, evocative and even iconic. There’s an evident amount of stylization but that doesn’t prevent the skin from defining an aspect that makes some sense within its expected boundaries. For that reason, Iron Inquisitor Kayle is a wonderful re-model that fans of the Judicator will find tailor made for her.

Pentakill Kayle
Pentakill Kayle Splash Art Pentakill Kayle Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Kayle as a hard rock vocalist.
Model: New model for Kayle and her sword.
Particles: New particles for her abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for her abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Splash Art: An explosion, dissonant chaos, screams and shouts: another Pentakill concert. The background shows the band defying the laws, all of them, in another epic concert. Sadly, the spectacle is marred by a monochromatic hue used for the whole setting. Add to this the intense blur added and what should be a highlight of the piece becomes a diluted secondary element. Unsurprisingly, the hands at the bottom don’t say much except that the audience is quite close.
Kayle mostly escapes from this cruel fog though her sword struggles to do so. Most of her weapon can be seen but the blade becomes more diffuse as we approach its end. The waves that come from her are also strange. Barely visible on the right it’s no swing of her sword but, apparently, her vocal power; which has never been a staple of Kayle yet could be her dubious call to fame in Pentakill. Regardless, the waves get in the way more than supplement her portrayal. The wings also have some trouble appearing in whole and the perspective doesn’t give a full view of their design. The same happens with her bent knee as the left leg is so subdued for no good reason. As is usual, the central area is clearly depicted so that her torso and head show varied colours, clean lines and good shading. A close look reveals that details can feel sketchy but they are noticeable.
Overall, there could be no better way to show Pentakill that in concert. Sadly, such idea isn’t a success because of the draft-like quality of the setting. Kayle fares better but her portrayal is far from perfect. To be fair, the piece gets its message across. However, it doesn’t impress or delight given the potential it has.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Without a doubt Pentakill Kayle allows the Judicator to embrace the necessary style for hard rock. With her armoured wings and right spaulder as well as florid hairstyle she delves a bit on glam rock but it’s more a dip of the toe than a full dive. In general, the leather clothing and metal decoration give the appropriate feel. The microphone sword may also be a compromise between glam and hard rock but it ends up being classy. In fact, Kayle ends up looking quite different from her usual self and along the contrast of colours that makes her model rather attractive. It would be great if the same could be said about the whole of the skin. The model is nice but nothing groundbreaking and the rest follow through in equal measure.
Particles are an unusually sober affair. Reckoning looks like a flame, a brief and little animated flame, that flies fast and leaves little in the memory. When it hits an enemy the result is even less interesting. Divine Blessing adds sparks flanking the recipient and the Mordekaiser helmet, symbol of Pentakill, marks the buff; which is a rather simple approach. Righteous Fury is more interesting with a chain in flames over her head and flames, different and subtler to classic, lighting her blade. On-hit, sparks and the Morde-helmet appears on the ground; as if a promotional product this were. The ultimate, Intervention, stand out but not enough. The rotating chains that surround the target are nice but their colour mixes too much with the classic glow of the ability and can be hard to notice. One thing is sure across abilities: changes are subtle, classy and brief; which is somewhat unexpected as Pentakill is known as loud, bombastic and devastating.
Sounds are actually rather timid as well and, sadly, disappointing. Auto-attacks are a clank of metal and when improved by Righteous Fury it’s just a louder clank. Both Reckoning and Divine Blessing, despite their differences rely on similar sounding scratching of metal. What manages to stand out is the electric guitar when activating Righteous Fury; though it’s very brief and unspectacular. Fortunately, Intervention does have a distinct sound of saturated guitars which give the much needed Pentakill feel to the skin.
The recall has Kayle making good use of her microphone, for once, on an impromptu stage that transports her to safety. The music is spot-on in style but Kayle doesn’t sing despite her pose which is, frankly, puzzling; not to say that it makes the whole animation a pointless demonstration of style over substance. It could be said that the recall is fitting but, again, not really impressive.
All things considered, this skin never feels impressive. It does feel good and the result is acceptable even if shy with respect to changes. Not only there’s reliance on the classic persona but there’s never the feel that this is Pentakill and you are going to feel it; like it or not. Instead, Kayle feels forced into Pentakill without fully integrating into the style. Like a child wearing a borrowed costume she looks the part but only because she has to. Even if we disregard the ridiculous price with respect to the handful of additions that the skin offers this is a skin that never embraces what it aims to and that’s probably a worse sin.

Conclusion

In spite of most of Kayle’s skins closely adhering to her classic style they manage to provide some distinct looks. Battleborn Kayle is the recommended skin due to its elegant ornamentation and attractive style. It elaborates on her angelic persona with a suitable warrior style. It’s expensive for a re-model but it stands as a safe and attractive option.

More attractive but also different from the norm is Iron Inquisitor Kayle. It presents a distinct identity that stands apart with its careful balance of dark tones and gold. The decoration adorns as much as it protects and for a fantastic creature the Judicator adopts a unique appearance. Fans of Kayle will find it an interesting option with an iconic identity.

Viridian Kayle isn’t a bad skin for its price. It won’t impress but it manages to provide an appealing aesthetic and retain Classic Kayle’s familiar look. As far as re-textures go it’s an acceptable option.

The legendary choice, Aether Wing Kayle, is a skin better left for dedicated Kayle fans. Both fantasy and sci-fi fans will find conflicting elements in its concept and execution. It’s a skin with some shining moments but, in general, the pastiche of themes doesn’t feel as satisfying as it should.

Pentakill Kayle is a skin that aims at delivering all the raging power of the band but it never does. It faintly and thinly projects Pentakill influence on the Judicator without her ever embracing the theme. The result is clearly lacking and doesn’t manage to coalesce Kayle and Pentakill into an integral and appealing whole.

Finally, Riot Kayle is worth catching for fans of Kayle while available. In spite of being a fictional take on her law enforcing role it manages a reasonable and appealing aspect. In terms of legacy-promotional skins, Riot Kayle is an interesting choice.

  1. Nice reviews. Next harrowing and shadow isles skin plz 😀

    • Done. A pleasure as always.

      • What do u prefer Galio Gatekeeper or Aether Kayle? I main top with galio but i like kayle and i want to practise with her i prefer the aether skin but i like galio but but 🙁

        • It’s a difficult choice because both skins have interesting looks but executions that don’t make the most out of the concepts. Gatekeeper Galio has great particles but his animations are almost the same. Conversely, Aether Wing Kayle has more distinct animations, her auto-attack specially, but her particles are unimpressive.

Additionally, Gatekeeper is a more modest skin in terms of changes as it’s older. Aether Wing has more features yet they aren’t always the best they could be. On the whole, both are nice yet flawed skins that are worth considering for fans of the respective champions.

If you are a Galio fan then Gatekeeper is his best option. If you want to start learning Kayle then make sure that you really like her first and then decide how much you are willing to spend. In case Kayle becomes another favourite then Aether Wing could be a good option but if you end up not liking her much it may be an unnecessary purchase. After all, there’s no need to rush in your decision as legendary skins don’t go on sale.

  2. I was looking forward to hearing your point of view on Kayle’s skins and, as usual, it is a pleasure to read you.

I could not agree more about Battleborn being the best skin for Kayle. Being a fan of Kayle myself I could not resist purchasing this fine piece of art soon after it was released.
If I may add a little comment about it, I would say that it makes her look younger. It is like seeing her some thousands years back, leading the charge in her crusade against evil.
The wings are indeed too small but you could say that it reinforces the impression that she is not quite yet mature.

    Keep up the good work.

    • Thanks for the compliments, we’ll continue to do our best.

You give and interesting perspective about how the smaller wings and fresh design result in a younger aspect for Kayle. It sure is a great look for Kayle and she definitely needs more skins with such quality.

  3. when will the new legendery kayle’s skin be reviewed ?

  4. Will you be reviewing the new kayle skin? Im really curious to see how youll rate it.

  5. Thanks for the review. Just bought Kayle and I wish Judgement Kayle was available 🙁
However, I’ll probably get Battleborn Kayle (I think Viridian Kayle’s splash art is cooler-looking thought)
And if I end up REALLY enjoying Kayle, I MIGHT pick up Aether Wing Kayle.
I say MIGHT because I usually don’t get legendaries. The only one I have is Lion Dance Kog’maw.
    Thanks again.

    • You’re welcome.

Judgment Kayle is rather good but Battleborn Kayle is a great choice too. Battleborn is quite nice at displaying her battle angel side in a more fantastic and less imposing way.
Viridian Kayle’s splash art sure has an interesting pose but it sadly shows its age.

Aether Wing Kayle is a skin that isn’t bad but not as good as a legendary would be expected to be. In theory, it changes every aspect of Kayle but the result isn’t really impressive; except in a few specific features like the recall. It will help if you like Kayle but consider making sure that you find the skin worthwhile due to its price.

  6. I think kayle’s legendary skin is better than vlad’s. In this case you guys should start putting halve stars cuz aether wing kayle deserver three and a half. 🙂

    • Aether Wing Kayle is certainly more elaborate than Blood Lord Vladimir; as it’s more recent. However, both skins have flaws that don’t let them shine as they should. Half stars are a rather subtle thing, are two skins separated by half a star really that different?

We prefer to recommend instead of grading the quality of skins. Considering what they offer and their price the star rating gives a general recommendation. It’s just a piece of advise and should be taken as such.

    • Yep, aether is the best

  7. can i still buy unmasked kayle? i want this skin…. and judgement to… really want….. want to hear your comment….xD ^_^

    • Unmasked Kayle is a legacy skin and can return at any Legacy Skin Vault sale. The last one happened near the end of 2012. Thus, with a bit of patience, you should be able to buy it sometime in the future.

Unfortunately, Judgment Kayle can’t be bought as it was a gift for players at the end of Season 1.

  8. Is it possible that Viridian Kayle’s splash art show’s Kayle ultimate? Her ultimate is supposed to “bathe the target in holy light”, so could it be her ultimate lighting up a dark area or something? Because, in my opinion, the background could be either day or night…

    • It’s an interesting interpretation yet the patch of homogeneous black still seems a disappointing stretch. If that were the case the splash art would be more attractive but it should be represented in a clearer way. Still, thanks for sharing your thoughts it’s a clever vision of the splash art.

  9. I think when Kayle will finally recieve VU (considering it’s comming due change of spell icons) the Aether Wing skin will recieve some good attention in terms of model detail and effects. I think it’s wise to wait for a while and see how it turns out.

    • Remember that Kayle already received a visual upgrade, it was one of the first even before recall animations were added. That’s not to say that she wouldn’t welcome some extra work though it might not be necessary to do a complete VU. The skins would definitely benefit from some extra additions, Aether Wing is especially in need of some refinement.

      • Yes I agree I feel there is no need for Kayle to get complete VU (I couldn’t explain myself :)but since I play her with original skin (for now at leat) her effects look pretty old and she even has no recall animation. Maybe they could do something like Vel’Koz in this patch update her model and effects with high resoulution/quality textures considering how good Vel’Koz now looks it would very good for Kayle.

        • That would be a good idea, maybe with some new animations and better particles she would be more satisfying. In terms of her model she seems alright but the rest feels archaic.

          • One last question you change skin ratings after reworks and updates of model or not?

          • Yes we do, if there is a difference. Some VUs have improved skins and so their rating has gone up while in other cases they stayed the same; let’s skip the remaining option. So, if Kayle were to receive new particles or animations then we would check if there’s anything that merits a change on the skins’ rating.

  10. Hi there (Again)

Got another questions for you. I was looking at the Kayle skins and like the look of Aether Wing, however in my opinion it is too over priced. It seems like you can get that amount of content on a skin that cost 975-1300. For example Void fizz and Atlantean Syndra. I have looked at her other skins and only found one that I would buy, the Judgment Kayle, this skin offer a great new model for her. But….. it’s off limits to everyone. Forever!! So it leaves little choice for people that want a good, content filled, ok priced Kayle skin.

For whatever reason I don’t like her standard skin (Except for the splash art)

So my question is, whats would you guys do? Am i missing a champion similar to her that offers great skins? Is her Aether Wing skin worth it considering my situation? I feel really stuck for choice. If you were also wondering, yes the skin I buy for her would be used very frequently and I play her masses. I would also like to have some riot points left over, once having bought a skin to buy the TPA shen skin. If you have any reasons why I should not buy that skin please say. Sorry if this is too long winded for you to read/answer to.

As always superb skin reviews, keep up the work and thank you for your time.

    • We’ll certainly keep working hard; glad that you find the reviews useful.

We completely agree with you in that Aether Wing Kayle feels lacking for a legendary skin. There are new particles, sounds and animations but the result is closer to a cheaper skin than the spectacle expected from a legendary. We would only recommend Aether Wing to dedicated Kayle fans.

The problem is that the changes neither feel significant nor memorable. In the end, aside from her new auto-attack animation combined with Righteous Fury there’s little to make the skin stand out. The new flying animations and recall help a bit but the former aren’t groundbreaking and the latter is circumstantial.

You could buy a skin for another champion but it wouldn’t be the same. If you really like Kayle you want her to look good and another champion, regardless of how similar, won’t feel like playing with Kayle. We would suggest Battleborn Kayle as it has reasonable armour, a distinct sword and a different angelic aesthetic. It will feel familiar and even similar to Classic Kayle as it’s only a re-model but in terms of looks it has a clear and interesting appearance.

TPA Shen is an interesting take on an urban ninja that feels quite unique despite struggling to fit in a fantasy realm. Regardless, it’s an appealing option for fans of Shen. If you like him chances are you’ll appreciate such a peculiar style.

      • Well firstly thanks for the response, I felt like I needed a second opinion. I think I will pass on buying a kayle skin, in the hope that one day in the next year there will be a new and good skin for her. Its a bit of a long shot but I don’t fancy spending money on her for a skin that I might not like.

I was also wondering if there was somewhere I can Private Message you guys? I have something to ask that I would like to not be open for the public to see?

Once again thanks for the reply and guidance.

        • Not at all. We are sorry that some skins simply aren’t as satisfying as they should. Aether Wing Kayle is a good skin but it stretches its legendary label as it doesn’t feel as special as it should. Fans will appreciate the changes but it leaves the feeling that a bit more should’ve been done. We still think that Battleborn Kayle is a good option and if you can catch it on sale it might be worth your time.

You can try contacting us through Tweeter. Even though we don’t use it often as we usually centre on the site it could be what you are looking for.

    • I agree that Judgement Kayle is the most desirable Kayle skin. Sadly it’s off-limits to me, so I’m forced to regularly beg my friend to sport it.
Aether Wing in particular has a really bad looking Q spell (or is it just me?). It should really be downgraded to a 1350 skin.

      • Truth be told, Aether Wing Kayle’s particles are not very spectacular. It feels like it pushes the limits of the definition of a legendary skin. The changes are there but, sadly, they don’t feel relevant.

  11. Riot Kayle?

  12. Should I get riot kayle or riot nasus?
On one hand riot Kayle has better effects but i think Riot Nasus would give me more appreciation from the people im playing with..
What do you think i should get? Which skin would get me more appreciation or make me special in the eyes of my teammates

Keep up the good work 😛

    • Well, we would recommend you choose a skin based on what you enjoy the most instead of what other people think. If you like Riot Kayle then go for it, it’s a good skin with some nice additions. Riot K-9 Nasus is simpler though it has a distinct identity.

Regardless, it’s your money and time that will be spent on a skin so you should try to make the experience as worthwhile as possible. Therefore, consider playing what you like. If your teammates are really good they’ll accept your choices. If not, maybe they aren’t the best people to be around.

  13. About the Silver Kayle skin, you note she has blue wings in the skin but they are actually a bluish silver. The way you state it is not very clear, as they actually possess more silver/white than blue, or just an extremely light blue. Also, about the splash art of said skin, you note that the proportions of her body are wrong all around, but don’t actually specify anything, which seems like a letdown and an unfinished work.

Additionally, I made a comparison here: If Unmasked Kayle, possibly one of the most overpriced skins in the game, is two stars, then why is Exiled Morgana only one star? I am not disagreeing that either skin is overpriced, but I don’t understand why Unmasked Kayle gets that one extra star. It is true that the Morgana skin lacks model changes aside from textures, but it makes up for it with fitting particles for her autoattack on top of a very nice theme. Is it because of how her classic ability particles clash with her new theme? I don’t think that is necessarily a bad thing as her lore mentions how she studied dark magic in her early days before falling from grace, and dark magic is dark magic however you look at it.

    • Perhaps we should clarify that it’s light blue instead of just blue. With regards to proportions it seemed obvious at the time but perhaps we should clarify.

The main difference between Unmasked Kayle and Exiled Morgana is that the former has, minor but clear, model changes whereas the second is just a re-texture. The new particles are nice but are inconsistent as they only affect a few things. Thus, there’s a clear clash between the new and classic particles.

In general, Unmasked Kayle gives the impression of an overpriced but finished product that isn’t as good on practice as it could sound on theory. However, Exiled Morgana not only is unbecoming of its price but, due to the particles, also seems unfinished. That’s our view on the matter but we are open to suggestions.

  14. Riot Kayle has unmentioned sounds for her recall.
On the skin itself, I personally simply cannot take it seriously and actually find it one of the funniest skins which are not even trying to be funny. I think it is just because it always reminds me of one game where two of my friends went bot lane and one of them was playing Kayle support with that skin, they bickered comedically through the laning and it was quite funny. I do like the effects for her E a lot in that skin.

    • Indeed, missing recall sounds have proven to be a formidable enemy like Legion: for they are many.

We agree that Riot Kayle is a bit of a preposterous skin that can’t really be taken seriously and, while not funny, it’s enjoyable if one takes it for what it is. The electric particles are rather nice on Righteous Fury and her wings look quite good as well.

As always, it’s a matter of effectively using what resources are available.

  15. Battleborn Kayle is currently on sale, but I’ve been debating between that skin and Riot Kayle. On the one hand, I *love* the Riot/police line (Riot Blitz is one of my most favorite skins in the whole game). And yet I’m worried that later in the game, when Kayle can more-or-less keep Righteous Fury up at all times, the sirens will become kind of annoying :/

Riot Blitz has louder sirens on its W, but the skill has a higher cooldown so it maintains the novelty and amusement factor. If Righteous Fury is up constantly, even with the subdued sounds, the police-theme novelty might wear thin and start grating on my nerves, you know?

A catch-22: I can’t get a good feel of using the skin without owning the skin lol

    • It’s true, the permanent sirens and emergency lights can get a bit annoying if they are always on. Usually the electric baton and its auto-attack capture the attention and with all the chaos that usually reigns in the battlefield it can be ignored; to a point. The noise isn’t that loud and the lights aren’t that huge so they don’t impose their presence. Regardless, it can be felt and there’s no practical way of turning them off.

It’s an aspect that should be considered. It can get annoying but usually one concentrates in other aspects of the gameplay. The best we can suggest is to check some videos with Riot Kayle at late game to see just how bad it is. It’s not the same as playing her but you can get a good idea of how much Righteous Fury gets in the way.

Battleborn Kayle is a fine re-model. It certainly doesn’t have the extras that Riot Kayle does but also costs less. If you are a fan of Kayle then Battleborn is a good skin if taken for what it is. It’s a bit expensive for a re-model but it shouldn’t disappoint. Between the two Riot is certainly more elaborate but, as this case demonstrates, more isn’t always better.

  16. Nice review.. but Aether Wing is not “3 stars” like Viridian or BattleBorn, I mean, she’s in a whole next level.

    • Aether Wing Kayle is, indeed, in a whole new level but also with a price according to it. If you are gonig to spend so much then you should get as much as other legendary skins are able to offer. For a legendary skin we find that it doesn’t incorporate as many and as significant changes as it could. That doesn’t mean it isn’t an attractive skin but it’s not great either. In technical terms it is a superior skin to Viridian or Battleborn but at its level it should shine bright with its own light.

  17. Hey! So I was just wondering when Riot Kayle will be next available for purchase in the shop? Or is there no official date and riot just decides to put her up for a random event? Just curious because it’s my favourite of all of Kayle’s skins.

Also, thank you so much for doing these reviews, they have helped me decide which skin to get on multiple occasions. 🙂

    • Glad that you find the reviews useful.

In theory, Riot skins are for expos like E3 or PAX. When they are present at such an expo they usually make the Riot skins available but it’s been a while since that. They could also be available at some special event or in a bundle. However, outside of expos, there’s no telling for sure.

      • Hi again!

So I already have battleborn Kayle, however, I’m considering also buying the new iron inquisitor skin as it is also quite appealing to me. I was wondering if you think it is worth for me to but it as well when I have battleborn already.

Also, I have pretty much given up on Riot Kayle since it didn’t come out during the recent pax and I don’t see it coming back anytime soon 😛

        Thanks in advance 🙂

        • We’d say that you shouldn’t completely give up on Riot Kayle. There’s nothing certain about when it’ll be available again but as anything related to skins is so unpredictable it could happen anytime.

Anyway, Iron Inquisitor is quite different from Battleborn and Riot Kayle. If you like Kayle and play her often then having two skins that you like is reasonable. In a way Iron Inquisitor is a skin that stands opposite Battleborn while keeping the same classy style. We’d recommend you wait for a sale, in the meantime you can make the most of Battleborn; assuming it’s not too old of a purchase.

Iron Inquisitor is a good skin so even if it’s only a re-model it has a lot to offer. It’s not the most elaborate but its distinct identity sets it apart from the rest. If you do get it we don’t think you’ll regret it. The problem is that as you start getting more skins the expense quickly accumulates. For that reason we recommend to be patient and get skins on sale; it can save a lot of money. In the meantime Riot Kayle may appear.

  18. HI Zero, I was wondering whether Iron Inquisitor Kayle is worth to buy? So far her skins are more on the “good” side which fit her angelic status. But Iron Inquisitor Kayle offers a more darker theme with goth elements such as bloody tear strained mask and blood colored wings, which is a new approach on her. Since it is just a remodel skin with twisted dark theme, I was wondering should I buy that? Also, I think Black Scourge Singed quite nice too, the witch doctor elements kinda fit him, it’s like adding a little Tim Burton touch on him 😀

Love you work, your reviews are life savers

    • Glad that you find the reviews useful.

We agree that Iron Inquisitor Kayle is a good skin. It’s only a re-model but it’s interesting and distinct. The same applies to the other two though Black Scourge Singed has a more appealing premise while Cursed Revenant Nocturne is a bit brief in changes; as Nocturne has a small model.

As re-models, they are good skins and if you like the concept they are well done. If you want more from them they won’t be able to convince. Regardless, what they offer is certainly good.

      • I think Cursed Revenant Nocturne more like a combination of his Void and Ravager skin but with more elaborated weapon, i guess

        • It’s not that far off the truth. We think it keeps too close to the usual elements without adding anything novel to the mix. Sure, the Cursed Revenant idea is good but the approach is conventional so there has to be something else to make the skin special.

  19. Was wondering if you were going to make a review about the iron inquisitor kayle skin, yes/no?

    • Of course, we always review new skins. We’ll try to have the skins reviewed as soon as possible; preferably before the weekend.

  20. I bought Riot Kayle with a 50% discount on it in the personal shop. Was it worth?
I like Kayle, and imo Riot Kayle and Iron Inquisitor Kayle are the coolest skins, but the E particles made it more attractive than the 750rp one (and I didn’t have any discount on it so I wouldn’t even think about it).

    • We do think that Riot Kayle is a worthwhile skin. Sure, it’s a bit preposterous even if taken from a sci-fi angle. However, the result is visually and aurally attractive and sets itself apart from the other skins. At half price, it’s a great option. Eventually, Iron Inquisitor will go on sale and you can enlarge your Kayle skin collection. It’s also a good skin with a clear identity but only a re-model.

    • Not worth now that it’s being given away free, rip

      • Owners of Riot Kayle get a mystery gift as part of the 10 year anniversary celebration. Those with inconceivable luck will probably get happy at the prospect while the rest of us, mere mortals, will have to make the most of what we get. We can still hope for some good luck, though.

  21. Hi Zero, what do you think of Aether Wing Kayle nowadays? I mean since the Legendary tier skins has vastly improve since it’s release.

Do you think Aether Wing Kayle is still worth purchasing?

I do play Kayle sometimes, but when I do her Autos animation are unbearably lazy shes just slamming her Sword (Righteous Fury) and unenthusiasticly swings her sword (standard autos).

The point is I like AW Kayle’s animations, its like a breathe of fresh air for her XD. All the animations are excellent to me especially the Autos, Flying and Recall animation.

    What do you think?

    • We agree that Aether Wing Kayle’s auto-attack animation, which is re-used for Righteous Fury, is very nice. It may not be enough to make the whole skin wothwhile, though. Fortunately, the skin does have other features to like yet it’s a skin that doesn’t impress. It’s appealing but it isn’t great.

That said, a legendary skin is for a dedicated fan. There’s little point in going to a big expense if the skin won’t see much use. The skin hasn’t aged badly and is still a good option. Still, take into that there’s a contrast with the somewhat outdated classic animations. A potential, though probably low-priority visual upgrade, could change things.

We can recommend Aether Wing Kayle to a fan of the Judicator. To someone that only plays her from time to time it’s not such a clear recommendation. It’s a good skin but certainly something to buy if you are going to get the most from it.

      • Currently I have her Battleborn skin and Riot Kayle the free gift and I must say I’m not impressed with both of them. Yes Battleborn was the first skin I bought for her and that was a long time ago so the appeal is lost now.

Other than AW Kayle, Pentakayle is the other interesting one. However, since the price is close with AW Kayle and it couldnt compete with what the AW Kayle offers I dont really see much choice :/

        • It’s true that Kayle doesn’t have any recent or really impressive skins beyond re-models. Re-models are nice but they aren’t what they used to be. We still think that legendaries are for dedicated fans though. Pentakill on sale could be a distraction if you really like Aether Wing Kayle.

As you put it, you’d have to decide if you like and play Kayle enough to justify a legendary skin. Besides, do you like Aether Wing Kayle enough to spend so much on it? If you do then it’s a purchase worth making but if you aren’t sure then it’s better to think it a bit more. After all, there’ll be no sale for Aeather Wing.

          • Yeah I’m gonna think about it throughly, thanks for the help Zero I really appreciate it ?

          • No problem. Drop a line if you have any more doubts.

          • Hey Zero, so I just bought Pentakill Kayle recently when it was on sale. I must say I am impressed with the skin partly due to the 50% sale makes it a worthy purchase I dont see myself getting it at full price. It was a worth wait from my first comment here regarding Kayle on May, now 7 months later here I am with the skin. Thanks for your advice Zero.

Umm I was actually worried about you and this website, as I get a Website is suspended notification when I tried opening your page. I hope everything is okay now?

          • Not at all. Hope that you enjoy the skin. It’s not a skin to avoid but it could’ve been much better. It’s clear that it has problems but that doesn’t mean it has no value. On sale, it’s certianly a better option.

We had some technical problems which brought the site down. Now everything should be working alright, should. Let’s hope it’s as permanent as we hope.

  22. Hope u will update soon as rework done

    • The rework has only been announced and not released yet. It will take a while with two champions upgraded and so many skins. Still, we will try to update when we can.

  23. It’s me. Your friendly commentator.

I came for upcoming rework for Kayle and Morgana, which is awesome in the term of the model itself and particle stuff. But at first, i have a mixed feeling in the term of what is kept from original.

So let’s start with my favorite ” You too will be judged “. Morgana and her skin line got a nice improvement even though the aura is no longer there. Some may look better without it. Problem with Morgana is …I’m kinda not a fan of facial animation stuff of her taunt, her default recall but hey that one still passable. From a skinny fallen angel to elegant is huge improvement as well and i glad about it.

Her sister is a different story. First glance, i don’t hate her new armor despite some people tell that Kayle is look like wearing a bicycle suit. What i would love is that every “base form” of kayle are very good, i was glad that she wasn’t that awful until… her last two form. When i see those, i was crying about what did they did with her face and know Unmasked Kayle will be like that as well ? (oh wait that one got reworked into Transcended).

In my defense that Kayle’s skin is alright to me. So does her sister. I am appreciating Riot for those two get to shine again after many year of ugly model.

Until the reviews, have a nice day.

    • We also have some mixed feelings about visual upgrades in general. The problem is the homogeneity that plagues skins. The classic base is too noticeable and they often struggle to stand apart from the improved and realiable Classic; so much so that they simply don’t add changes for skins that ought to have them, like legendaries.

We haven’t seen enough to have a word on the Kayle and Morgana but we also see too many old tropes applied to them which make them a little less original than what they could’ve been. They work but it’s more of what expected from fantastic, fictional angels. In comparison the old versions felt less trope heavy even if they weren’t exemplary.

The update certainly has merit and was long overdue for Morgana, Kayle had already received one but it seems that her gameplay needed work. The result doesn’t look but we wonder if it’ll be as exciting as the announcement suggests. We’ll have to review and see. Have a nice day, too.

      • Alright, i wait at least long enough for Kayle’s tweaks in her skin. It’s look much better but i am still disappointing at Aether Wing. The only redeemable part is the recall, she remind me of Samus Aran, whom I think what Kayle should be like. And of course the splash art, which drew by Alex Flores, the man behind the amazingly Dragonslayer Pantheon and other stuff. Even though, It’s still a misleading skin. Copying the style from Mecha and Pulsefire is unoriginal.

Her sister, Morgana is nothing to say at least. Exiled Morgana has been updated and it’s stand out unique and at least enough for 975 RP but future or not Sinful Succulence would lower the price due to following update Riot in-game store so … no particle is need it.

So far so good but both of them have limited skin (especially Kayle with Judgement, Sliver) still need more works.

For me, i’m just going to place bet that Iron Inquisitor would end up become your best recommended one. Good day !

P/s: For Prestige Edition of K/DA Ahri, i think you should review normally since Riot confirmed that she can get through Hextech Crafting by re-rolling.

        • Usually, improvements in the PBE are small even if they can be a positive. It’s a pity that visual upgrades simply don’t capitalise on the opportunity to fix and improve conceptually as well as in execution. The standardisation of skins ends up making them less exciting and sometimes even monotonous.

We didn’t know that K/DA Ahri Prestige Edition can be crafted. Do you have a link to an official annoucement? Does it apply to other Prestige Edition skins? Thanks for the information. Good day to you too.

          • Well they don’t have official announcement on page but i think it was introduced when Blood Moon Aatrox release.

            Riot Mort: https://twitter.com/mortdog/status/1044693143088582657

That just from a Riot employees, i’m not sure if Fandom (wikia) was wrong or not, I believe that every time a prestige skin come out, given out one star is incorrect. Remember Zero, this is for collectors. So after you read this comments, maybe.. Re-review of all those prestige skins since you rather have them than actual one star skin.

So sure, That one is promotional stuff but it’s not limited. I would ignore 2500 token stuff in the past since they just want to get it early. Sometime you would argue that you paid a skin and later on that one got reduce price. I accept that since nowaday you have Hextech Crafting and you’re not paying them. That all my opinion.

          • We aren’t fans of the random-based hextech crafting as a way of getting skins. In fact, it seems like the probability of getting a Prestige Skin is low like getting a rather good skin.

In our view, hextech crafting is too much like gambling and not a good way of consistently getting skins. The random aspect makes sure that you pay more than things are worth. We don’t think this changes our view on Prestige Skins but it’s something to keep into account, thanks.

          • So… alright, i’m understanding that re-roll stuff won’t pleased to people who really want it or owned before that mechanic. But i’m glad that those skin are not obtainable with gemstone since particle is not a major thing, just a shiny but lowsy.

Now next one is Fuzz Fizz Prestige Edition, which is a very good skin actually. Allow me to explain it despite 😀 not a Zero team member (i wish tho but nah).

If you compare it to other prestige skin, at least this one has more major model change to original Fuzz Fizz. The difference is his trident is more like a candelabra than a toy trident. Fizz is wearing a crown reference to the Urfwick and Championship Riven. I’m not gotta tell the particle stuff yet since it can be change later on PBE.

Prestige skin is not suppose to be a golden chroma, that just my opinion and have a good day.

P/s: What side are you going to take ? Cat or Dog ?

  24. Hiya! Linking this from https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/axm0pv/aether_wing_kayle_aether_is_being_significantly/ehxy7z3/?context=3 it says Aether Wing’s getting death animation back and SFX changes, VFX for Battleborn, Silver, Judgement, Riot and leaves back to Blackthorn Morgana, just letting you know to expect these changes back in before you score the reworked skins.

    • Sad how visual upgrades keep taking features from skins and making them less interesting. Sure, they’ll add something back but in this cases it’s usually not as much as originally present. Let’s hope for an exception.

      • Also, just to be absolutely clear, Riot is discontinuing low tier skin VFX for good, there MAY be rare exceptions like Mordekaiser who has few skins and all are low tier with nothing extra. Just to keep those in mind for future reviews. Exceptions normally are those that already had some extra going on despite low tier.

This will not affect 1350/1820 tier skins.

        https://www.reddit.com/r/MorganaMains/comments/ass7oq/all_of_the_recolors_i_remembered_that_got_vfx/egyruhc/?context=3

        • That’s doesn’t sound good at all. A pity that skins offer less after a visual upgrade; which is essentially taking features from a skin. Unfortunately, the exceptions aren’t as unusual as they should be. The Kayle and Morgana rework already is an example of it. Skins should be improved by a visual upgrade or perhaps we are misunderstanding the meaning of upgrade.

  25. Hi! Just letting you know that Kayle skin changes are in, along with Morgana’s on live servers, no further changes will be done at this point.

    • It seems like there’s quite a bit to cover. It’ll take time but we’ll update the review. Thanks for the headsup, it’s useful to know that no further changes are to be made so that the reviews can be written with the finalised product.

Is there a list of the changes? We saw a few jokes in the 9.6 patch announcement for Kayle but nothing specific or actually useful and just nothing about Morgana.

      • Riot, Silver, Judgement, Battleborn all got VFX and some colour tweakings, Blackthorn Morgana got leaves back. Aether Wing got voice fiter removed, auto attack SFX changed to use similar to old one and got death animation.

  26. When are you updating the review Zero?

    • It’ll take time but we’ll update the sisters’ review. Sorry, we currently have a lot on our plate but we will keep work on reviews whenever we can.

  27. Can you do the reworked Kayle skins please ?
