League of Legends: Gangplank Skins’ Review – StrategyZero
Nov 222012

Gangplank, the Saltwater Scourge
Gangplank, the Saltwater Scourge

Gangplank, the Saltwater Scourge may be a pirate at heart but he seems versatile, or inebriated, enough to take other roles quite well; anything to rebuild his kingdom of fear. When you want to gobble oranges with style you can rely on Gangplank’s finely pillaged wardrobe to suit your needs. To guide you on such an adventure, catch sight of this skins’ review.

Spooky Gangplank
Spooky Gangplank Splash Art Spooky Gangplank Model
Category: Regular
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Gangplank as a ghost pirate.
Model: Major model changes for Gangplank and his weapons. New textures for his powder kegs and oranges. New glow effect for Gangplank and his powder kegs.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: Amidst the clouds the Moon reveals haggard ships on a tame dark sea. It’s a nice haunting setting but it’s not all there’s to see: the ships show the effects of the passage of time and lack of maintenance quite clearly. On board of one of them, the ghost of a pirate floats forward with empty eyes. As a spectre, Gangplank looks fine: his semi-transparent body achieves a good balance between intangible and solid. Therefore, his blade looks solid enough to strike yet his clothes softly dissolve at their ends. Overall, it’s piece that does an excellent job at displaying and framing Gangplank as a spirit on a ghost ship.

Conclusion: Both conceptually and technically, Spooky Gangplank is a fantastic skin. What formerly was a re-texture now has become a ghost with a personality of his own. The model changes keep the general style, which is reasonable, yet there are some different touches that set it apart. Therefore, in essence, it’s the same pirate but living beyond the grave. Fortunately, the glow effect adds a lot of depth to the skin and helps deliver the spectral theme. It’s a pity that the sword’s flames aren’t also coloured in the glow’s hue, or a similar one, as that would’ve kept the look consistent. It could be said that it could seem monotonous but he’s a ghost after all.
In spite of the evident familiarity, Spooky Gangplank shows that a skin it’s not just about the extent of the changes but also about their quality. Considering the end result, it’s a skin well worth acquiring.

Minuteman Gangplank
Minuteman Gangplank Splash Art Minuteman Gangplank Model
Category: Regular
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Gangplank in the image of an old Minuteman.
Model: Major model changes for Gangplank and his weapons.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: The background is filled with colour and textures but, in essence, it’s rather empty. More importantly, though, it doesn’t match the militia theme clearly displayed by Gangplank. The stormy sky and ghost ship, despite all the detail, don’t make sense. Gangplank does look good with great use of shading to display folds yet there may be a bit too much of that. Besides, the proportions aren’t always right: for instance if we compare his left arm to his right one or his thighs. Additionally, his pistol looks simplistic as well as the sparks. On the whole, it’s a splash art that gives a good view of Gangplank but that, too worried to provide a good show, has forgotten what it was depicting.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Minuteman Gangplank is a full change of clothes for Gangplank in the image of the Massachusetts militia companies of the American Revolutionary War. The uniform and weapons are acceptable and fulfil their objective. However, Gangplank’s old aspect directly contradicts the fact that minutemen weren’t older than thirty years old; as they were required to be ready at a minute’s notice. This makes the look questionable as an historical reference which added to its unspectacular appearance makes the skin a tad disappointing. Overall, it’s not a bad concept but the execution doesn’t do it justice. Considering it’s price, it can pass for a veteran of the American Civil War but that’s as far as it goes.

Sailor Gangplank
Sailor Gangplank Splash Art Sailor Gangplank Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Gangplank dressed as a classic navy soldier.
Model: New model for Gangplank and his weapons.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: This piece offers a picturesque display of Gangplank as a classic sailor that looks like fine fifties art ruined by a crude attempt at a caricature. The background doesn’t lack elements but does lack detail as it’s mostly out of focus. Furthermore, while Gangplank’s upper body seems like a painted portrait his lower body shows oversized shoes and trousers. Coupled with the fact that he seems to have only four fingers in each hand the portrayal disappoints despite its great potential. To sum up, a splash art with serious problems that could’ve been great but that ends feeling as a bad joke.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Sailor Gangplank doesn’t have a particularly striking concept, even though it’s suitable, so the execution is in charge of making the skin special. Unfortunately, while the look is well realized it’s also rather simple and caricature-like with more than a passing resemblance to Popeye; which is a good touch. That does provide the skin with a charming personality though the skin ends up being nothing remarkable. Therefore, it simply doesn’t feel particularly attractive or interesting despite having a pleasing aesthetic. In the end it’s not a bad purchase for a cartoony sailor style but there are better options for the pirate.

Toy Soldier Gangplank
Toy Soldier Gangplank Splash Art Toy Soldier Gangplank Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Gangplank as a plastic toy soldier.
Model: New model for Gangplank and his powder kegs.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: New taunt, standing idle, Parrrley, walking, stopping and death animations. New animation for his wind-up key.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: A cartoon style is quite fitting and understandable but it seems to hurt the piece more than help it. The background is appropriate yet unexciting and devoid of interesting elements; even though the drawn ship and pirate flag are apt references. Gangplank appears well shaded but his proportions are amiss: the body parts don’t have believable sizes; even for a toy. In the end, the piece serves as a portrayal but doesn’t generate interest in the look.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Toy Soldier Gangplank is a skin that appears interesting in concept but ends up lacklustre in practice. As a life-sized toy soldier Gangplank loses part of the little toy charm. At least, the design is reasonable for a finely crafted toy with an antique feel. Furthermore, the new animations try to round the concept yet, in the end, they don’t add enough to effectively realize the theme. Thus, the skin isn’t attractive enough for its price. Therefore, as a joke it isn’t funny and as an outfit for a fierce buccaneer it’s not that fitting. In the end, Toy Soldier Gangplank is valuable to collectors, due to its reduced availability, or toy fanatics.

Special Forces Gangplank
Special Forces Gangplank Splash Art Special Forces Gangplank Model
Category: Regular
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Gangplank dressed as a commando unit.
Model: New model for Gangplank, his weapons and powder kegs.
Particles: New particles for Parrrley and Cannon Barrage.
Animations: New animations for Parrrley and recall.
Sounds: New sounds for Powder Keg and Cannon Barrage.
Splash Art: The background is just grey diffuse clouds, fuzzy raindrops and the silhouettes of three commandos; which hint at future incorporations. In spite of the thorough disappointment that the background is Gangplank’s depiction stands tall as excellent. The perspective, shading, illumination and stance are great. Moreover, details like the laser scope, smoking barrel, rough undershirt sleeve and hitting raindrops make for minor but appreciated details that add depth to the portrayal. Not all is perfect as the undershirt and right leg pouch look sketchy and most raindrops seem to evade him. Regardless, as a portrayal it’s a great piece that makes the look interesting and appealing despite the lacklustre background.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Special Forces Gangplank ironically and cleverly places the lethality of a brave corsair into that of a loyal soldier. In spite of this move, the idea works and the execution makes sure that the concept shines. The model is well designed and detailed which effectively delivers the core idea. However, the new particles, animations and sounds round the execution and push the product way past average. The result is an appealing commando aspect with a minor underlying pirate feel that is quite satisfying to use. In conclusion, Special Forces Gangplank is an excellent skin that no Gangplank or military fan should skip.

Sultan Gangplank
Sultan Gangplank Splash Art Sultan Gangplank Model
Category: Regular
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Gangplank as a Turkish captain.
Model: New model for Gangplank, his weapons and powder kegs.
Particles: New particles for Cannon Barrage.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New ceramic sounds for Powder Keg and new recall sounds.
Splash Art: The background shows the combat between two ships, with one being demolished by Gangplank’s commands. The setting is surely appropriate but besides the hull of the ship the rest is simply filled with glare. There are other elements surrounding Gangplank but just as they add to the setting they obstruct the view. The pirate is still well depicted with a sensible stance and a defiant visage. The shading is correct but it tends to look a bit dull in certain places. For instance, compare his sword or face to his arms or legs. The general result is appealing but disappointing. It feels like a forced glimpse into a battle where not much can be seen and not due to the effects of combat.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: For many, Sultan Gangplank would feel like Sandokan, the Tiger of Malaysia but more appropriate may be the reference to Hayreddin Barbarossa a famour Turkish admiral. While the clothes incorporate more fur than in his usual depictions, the pirate theme remains clear even if unspectacular. By itself, Gangplank’s core is left intact but with a new Ottoman style that manages to fit with his personality. Additionally, the weapons are reasonable and the clothes regal but practical. All in all, it’s a skin that changes the surface but keeps all that makes the Saltwater Scourge unique. Fans of Gangplank will find little reason not to like it even if it’s not a radical innovation.

Captain Gangplank
Captain Gangplank Splash Art Captain Gangplank Model
Category: Regular
Price: 975 RP or free if you played Gangplank during the Bilgwater: Burning Tides event.
Concept: Gangplank as the master and lord of Bilgewater.
Model: New model for Gangplank, his weapons and powder kegs.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: New voice-over.
Splash Art: At the hull of his ship Gangplank calmly peels an orange with his flaming sword. The poor victim in front of him, perhaps us, helplessly awaits for his turn to receive the attention of such a keen edge. A fine work of scrimshaw is in line and escape is out of the question. What lies near the victim is blurry and out of focus, as well as what surrounds the only things that matters to the prisoner: Gangplank and his blade. The surroundings being out of focus fit the idea of the piece but feel like a happy coincidence more than an intended and well designed effect. After all, like many others splash arts, only the champion’s face and nearby areas are clearly depicted.
With that established, despite the fuzzy look of the background there are multiple elements to see and the idea of a ship’s hull is stated. The prisoner adds a lot of meaning to Gangplank’s presence and pose. It sets the stage not only for a bit of story but also for an interesting look at the pirate’s personality. Speaking of the Captain from the waist down the depiction is a sketchy mess that could’ve been saved a bit more elegantly. For example, if the central area of the victim’s vision were the only clear part and the rest out of focus in tones of red due to the stress caused then the sketchy parts would be more meaningful. At least there’s an area of Gangplank that is sharply portrayed with bright colours and excellent lightning. It’s a subdued but rich look at a pirate at the height of his power where the gold that decorates his clothes serves as prize for the blood that he has drawn.
All things considered, the splash art has some evident rough edges but also significance and context. It does much more than merely show Gangplank’s glory days it also let us peek at the means that brought his glory and fall.
Conclusion: Wearing fine clothes trimmed and emblazoned in gold as his hands offer death with weapons fit for royalty we find ourselves before the Saltwater Scourge at the peak of his pirate career. Captain Gangplank’s fame spread farther than Bilgewater, the home town he conquered, and the fear he instils reaches farther still. The elegance contrasts his brutal methods and show him as a king corsair that has built a kingdom by his own ruthless hand.
The way the skin stands opposite his classic persona tells his story: once king of the seven seas and then thrown overboard by the fruit of his methods. The dignity and respect that Captain Gangplank evokes is that of a man that has reached high by pilling the bodies of his enemies and has been hardened by such a climb. His voice-over is a great example of this. In spite of sharing a few quotes with the classic dethroned Gangplank, Captain’s lively tone of voice as well as confident remarks complement the brooding and threatening classic personality wonderfully.
Perhaps the skin isn’t revolutionary but it’s relevant. For fans of the Saltwater Scourge, Captain Gangplank is a return to his glory days and a reminder of what he once was. It’s a skin that rounds his character and, along the classic incarnation, tells a traditional but always interesting tale of piracy. No fan of Gangplank should miss his days as a Captain.

Dreadnova Gangplank
 Splash Art Dreadnova Gangplank Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Gangplank as a space pirate.
Model: New model for Gangplank, his weapons and powder kegs. New manhole for his recall, new monster for his recall and joke, new space-oranges for his joke and Remove Scurvy.
Particles: New particles for his abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for his abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Splash Art: The background is a blurred and plain display of surroundings. Whereas the ringed planet only tells of the relevance of space the, assumedly, large spaceship on the left paints a more interesting picture. Added to the explosion, that reasonably disrupts the view, it seems like an assault is in progress. There are some figures resisting the blast but the one of relevance is the one in front of us.
Gangplank receives a diffuse and brief display of his lower body compensated by an evocative upper body. Even his sword suffers from the lower quality of the lower part but as we progress upwards through his artificial arm we find that it’s a strong piece of machinery. That is followed by a uniform with certain references to his pirating activity; though the skull on the belt has a passing resemblance to Creator Viktor’s face. Regardless, the cloth is nicely shaded and metal is dented and lit with highlights that make a great frame for his ferocious and scarred visage. It’s plain to see that this is a man that has sacrificed much and is willing to go to large lengths to achieve his goals; a good insight into the champion’s identity.
All added together, this is a splash art of uneven quality which doesn’t prevent a meaningful and interesting display. The background sets a brief but relevant context to a depiction that easily catches the eye. While the portrayal is the best feature of the splash art there’s a great conception that only needs extra polish and setting to excel.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: With a mechanical take on space sci-fi it’s obvious that Dreadnova Gangplank owes much to Mass Effect. The advanced industrial feel of the arm and powder kegs added to the dark colour scheme and classic design of his weapons are clear indicators. This all works for the better in defining an identity for the skin that stands apart from the bright sci-fi that is usually chosen. Besides, it better fits a space pirate. Regardless, the colour scheme has much in common with Creator Viktor so if he stands as one of his intergalactic envoys or agents it wouldn’t be surprising.
Given the appealing model the particles and sounds shouldn’t be anything short of pleasing. They are effective but, to a point, also conventional. They follow recognisable patterns in design that end up standing out more in colour than in shape. With a perceivable mix of Headhunter and PROJECT schemes there’s retreaded ground. Still, the abilities have a futuristic appearance backed by soft, hi-tech sounds which convey their style. Remove Scurvy stands out with its distinct glow as well as Trial by Fire’s speed buff. Parrrley, Powder Keg and Cannon Barrage adapt in a conservative way the abilities though they are still attractive with their familiar yet distinct designs. The recall is a joke at the expense of Gangplanks’ tough-guy image which is funny the first few times but ends up saying little.
All things considered, Dreadnova Gangplank is a skin that borrows much of its material. The result is attractive even if not original and manages to transport the buccaneer to a new era of space-faring. The feeling that something more innovative wasn’t used is present so that even if the skin is appealing it still appears too familiar. Given that the changes are effective it’s a skin that stands as a good option

Pool Party Gangplank
Pool Party Gangplank Splash Art Pool Party Gangplank Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Gangplank enjoying a barbecue by the pool.
Model: New model for Gangplank, his weapons and powder kegs.
Particles: New particles for his abilities, auto-attack, taunt and recall.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for his abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Splash Art: With the fitting background of a pool there’s a good amount of water to look at. In spite of this, the water doesn’t appear crystalline and fresh and can seem gelatinous. The dull highlights and low transparency of the surface, despite the clear colour, make the water feel muddy. It’s still good enough to pass for a cartoon pool. Besides, the many cameos all around the pool add a lot of personality to what otherwise is a simple setting.
Three champions share the spotlight. Starting from the right we find Caitlyn relaxing in an inflatable flamingo. As there’s no obvious water war in place holding the rifle seems unnecessary but could pass for a professional habit or precaution. For the most part, Caitlyn shows clear lines but murky colours which give her depiction a sketchy feel. Her look is clear enough though but a look at her rifle shows that things could’ve been much clearer.
Zoe is the next and, in mid air after a ball, she’s surely enjoying herself. Her depiction is, understandably, more comical and cartoony than other champions. However, that doesn’t solve the problem of her left leg appearing noticeably longer than her right one; perspective and position taken into account. That aside, the shading is soft for skin and swimsuit but sometimes it looks sketchy. The swimsuit ruffles are nicely detailed and while the hair appears a bit solid it does look wet and watery in its transition to liquid.
Gangplank is the final champion and he’s a busy one. Hard at work at his barbecue it seems odd to put so much emphasis on his water pistol at the absence of a water war. His appearance is cartoony and colours become dull and diffuse from to head to toe; that may make sense on the smoky grill but not in a clear top-down view. Some diffuse food appears on a plate nearby: if they are oranges they barely look round enough and the same if they are bread rolls. Still, it’s a little corner of the piece where he’s king.
Overall, this is a splash art that effectively shares room between three champions. However, their presence isn’t always as relevant and interesting as others: some are just there while others act out a role. Add to this the need for polish to better present certain elements and we have a piece that would welcome some improvements. It doesn’t stop it from being an effective and fitting portrayal, though.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Although the idea behind Pool Party Gangplank lends itself for an interesting adaptation the skin ends up being too direct and simple. The clothes are a good example as they are quite straight to the point. Being that Gangplank is also cooking an extra reference like a funny chef hat or styled apron would’ve contributed to that side of the identity. As it stands, Gangplank dresses for the pool, wears a necklace without an obvious link and wields a spatula as his only cooking element. Cooking as a major activity established, then, a water pistol isn’t self explanatory. It could detract anyone that tries to get their hands on the stakes before they are ready but there’s no suggestion of that anywhere. The pistol looks like a good toy and that’s enough.
Particles seems somewhat repressed with only Cannon Barrage ultimate approach to water wars being a standout. Parrrley’s timid burst of water seems weak as well as the watermelon’s explosions. Speaking of which, the choice of watermelons as kegs seems forced. Explosive barbecues could’ve reinforced the cooking aspect, though it’s preposterous. Explosive balloons of water would’ve fit better though they’d lack inventiveness unless in the shape of ships as reference, for example. A different idea seems viable and with potential to be less disconnected. The rest of abilities barely receive changes and seem untouched.
Sounds support with shy splashes of water the visuals. This is especially noticeable in Cannon Barrage where the booming, classic cannons, which seem a bit out of place, give way to rather inoffensive splashes; they are effective but lack impact from what the ultimate suggests. Other abilities follow the same trend except for Trial by Fire and Remove Scurvy which, as in particles, seem untouched.
The new recall is good example of the leadership and bravado that have been so useful to Gangplank: that’s cooking with attitude. The lack of manners seems like a less aggrandising reference to his pirate ways but nonetheless fitting for Gangplank; though there should’ve some other subtle references to his pirate persona to work well. His joke is also adapted with new stakes. While no animation is actually changed it does bring a fresh look that supports the theme of the skin.
All in all, Pool Party Gangplank is a skin that goes beyond the simple water references but never fully embraces either water wars or cook angle. There’s a bit of each but neither strong or impactful enough to fully define the skin. It’s this diluted mix of ideas that makes the skin show a weak yet distinct identity; if only due to the mix of themes. If you find the mix a plus then add a star but if not then it’s a skin that would benefit from a better integration of elements and a more focused approach to its concepts.

Conclusion

Gangplank sure is flexible in his wardrobe choices, as his skins demonstrate, yet not all are equally good options. Special Forces Gangplank is definitely the recommended skin thanks to a good concept and a great execution. Spooky Gangplank is also a fantastic and cheap alternative with a distinct ghost theme.

Sultan Gangplank feels like a superficial change of style for the pirate. It maintains his nature but adapts his aesthetic with an Ottoman touch. If you aren’t looking for a skin that redesigns him then Sultan Gangplank is a nice change of clothes.

Captain Gangplank is a significant skin that allows a return to his days of glory in both looks and speech. The gold covers the ruthlessness and together become the prize and means of his efforts. The elegant yet deadly pirate shines his most in this skin so fans of the Saltwater Scourge will find much meaning and a touch of nostalgia in this, perhaps simple but, enjoyable skin.

Dreadnova Gangplank transports the corsair to a world of space-faring. The transformation is attractive but borrows all of its appeal from other sources. Therefore, there’s a pervading feel of familiarity on everything the skin offers. The result is still effective and appealing so it’s a fine option for what it offers.

Pool Party Gangplank is a skin that mixes water wars and cooking without effectively realising either. The diluted result lacks a convincing personality and enough impact on each idea. Still, the mix does give the skin a distinct identity which can be considered a plus; add a star in that case. If not, then this is a case where the adaptation could’ve integrated or emphasised more each aspect to make the skin more cohesive.

Finally, Minuteman and Sailor Gangplank will probably appeal to those that specifically like the concepts. Their executions aren’t bad but, all things considered, they feel a bit lacklustre.

  1. cool thanks for the review, it was worth the wait

    • Glad that you like it.

Sorry it took so long but, fortunately, we have a good amount of requested reviews and we prefer quality over quantity.

  2. Waiting for corki review ^^

  3. I understand that you guys have a lot of champion skin reviews in queue but can u at least give me your brief opinion on Definitely Not blitzcrank? and how many stars would u guys rate him out of 5..I’m asking this because the Definitely Not Blitzcrank skin is gonna be on sale in the garena server and I want some opinions before I buy it thx 🙂

    • We’ve only found mention of a sale on the 29th and 30th of October at Garena. Regardless, Definitely Not Blitzcrank is a nice skin for its price; assuming 520 RP.

It’ll probably get three or four stars, though more analysis is in order actually. Still, be mindful that price is relevant in this case as it’s a skin that, on it’s own, doesn’t impress. For a low price it’s a good option but if the price goes over 520 RP you should consider how much value you’d get from Blitzcrank, as a champion, and on the fact that it’s limited.

  4. thanks for the review

  5. Thanks for the review, I was looking for a GP skin and by reading this I got convinced that Special Forces is the best one.

  6. This is a great skin, if they would’ve changed the voice and joke/taunt/laugh would be a legendary skin

  7. Zero, what do you think about the upcoming new Sultan Gangplank skin? I don’t think is going to be as good as Special Forces GP but i really like the idea.

    • Seems an interesting take on a pirate. It reminds of Sandokan, the Tiger of Malaysia. From the look of things the classic particles fit well enough, so it’s reasonable to think that Special Forces will remain more elaborate. Still, it has a charming style.

  8. Great reviews zero, my favorite skin is definitely Special Forces. I might be wrong but it seems the ult on Sultan has particle changes.

  9. well actually special forces gangplak has a recall animation am i wrong? its standing but it makes a pose such as gladiator draven or king darius.

    • Indeed, you are right. All in all, it’s rather unassuming and even a bit plain. Regardless, it’s there though, fortunately, it’s not the only new animation.

  10. I think you messed up the skins review on this one.
There should be parrrrrrrrticle effect changes

  11. Hello StrategyZero,

I would like to know how there is a particle change in Sultan Gangplank Ultimate because i cannot see it myself?

    • The explosions and cannonballs have a different aspect in Sultan to the classic one. It’s not a remarkable difference but it’s there.

  12. I heard that our old scallywag Gangplank here is gonna get a visual and kit update. Random thoughts here, I’ve always admired your work and effort you put into making these discerning, detailed reviews, so I thought that you would be the ideal person to hear such thoughts, rather than the some hit, mostly miss crowds of the League forums. I always thought that Special Forces Gangplank looked aesthetically pleasing, suitable for a swashbuckling mercenary, but the changes in particles and animation were a bit too few, even for something with the asking price of 975. Do you think the skin would’ve been better with, say, different idle animations (reloading pistol occasionally, messing with a radio, etc.), different voice overs (one that, oh, I don’t know, suits a hardened merc instead of an generic buccaneer) or such? And do you think we may see some of these changes with the upcoming VU? Sorry for the long post.

    • Actually seems like Special Forces Gangplank is getting a downgrade to his animations, we’ll have to see but he’s probably not getting any more animations than the ones he had(has on live).

      • Let’s hope that Special Forces is not downgraded though that isn’t something to discard either. Hopefully, the skin’ll keep all the features that make it special. Visual upgrades of late tend to homogenize the look of all the skins too much so those features would be Special Forces biggest assets to stand out.

    • Thanks for the kind words.

As any skin, Special Forces Gangplank would certainly welcome more additions and animations are always interesting. In comparison to the other skins Special Forces has a clear advantage due to the multiple extras but they certainly aren’t impressive on their own. Actually, they add up to make the whole skin feel different.

The changes you mention definitely help the theme be better realized but they probably would send the skin into legendary territory if fully implemented. Regardless, he could have a few other animations or even some new quotes; other skins at 975 RP do offer them.

From what we’ve seen of the visual upgrade it seems to be mostly centred on changing his generic classic style into something with more personality. That would mean that the skins would merely be adapted to suit the new classic base. That’s the impression we get but we can’t be sure until the visual upgrade is finished.

Sadly, we wouldn’t have much hope in any skin receiving any significant additions. There have been many that needed them and had only been polished after a visual upgrade. Riot seems to prefer to leave skins as they are despite the fact that some extra work could greatly improve them. Seeing as Special Forces stands high among the others it’s probably a low priority if it’s even considered. We wouldn’t discard it as it’s a possibility but we don’t think it’s probable.

  13. Hey, are you going to remake the reviews with the release of the Gangplank rework? Now that the barrels change depending on the skin, I would like to know you opinion. Great reviews!
PS: Sailor Gangplank is now oficially Popeye.

    • Glad that you like them. We’re already prepareing the reviews, checking what’s new and getting everything organized for the release. The different powder kegs are a good touch, much like Teemo’s mushrooms, though not all the skins have different ones.

PS: Who would be Olive then?

  14. Hi, any plans on working on the reworked Gangplank skins? Or have you started already? 🙂 Would really like these reveiws, your reveiws always help.

    • We are working hard to update the site with all the Bilgewater content. As it’s a lot it’ll take a while but we are certainly busy with it.

  15. Some great reviews!

Do you plan on updating them for Gangplanks rework?

  16. Spooky Gangplank has new textures for the oranges in his joke

  17. Thank you for the review I really like how the new barrals look on Spooky GP 🙂

    • Not at all. While the barrels aren’t re-modeled it makes sense that they are the same but with a spooky glow added. The glow effect does wonders to set the skin apart.

  18. Where’s Captain Gankplank review? It’s a skin now. Also the base model for GP is also changed.

    • Indeed, we’ll wait until it’s actually available to review it. Right now, it’s added to the game but not available; as far as we can tell.

  19. the captain gangplank skin actually has the same recall animation as the base

  20. For the Special Forces Gangplank review, it says that the skin received new particles for Raise Morale- does that refer to one of the upgrades for his ultimate or is it just an outdated part of the review?

  21. Hey Zero, I think it’s worth noting that all of his skins use the voice-over from the Captain skin rather than the default skin. Or to put it another way, it’s the default skin that has a separate voice-over from the others. It would even be interesting if you wrote a review for the default from that point of view.

    • Ah crap, I was looking at outdated information. This doesn’t seem to be the case after all.

      • Don’t worry, that how it was when Captain was the default skin. After the release of the actual classic skin the Captain skin ended up with a unique voice-over and the new classic skin is the one that spread its voice-over to the others; as Captain did as default.

  22. About Sultan Gangplank skin, it is actually inspired from the “Hayreddin Barbarossa”,Barbarossa means “red beard” he was once a pirate later the admiral of the Ottoman Empire, and the skin released at the 1st year of the Turkey server with Sultan Tryndamere.

    • It’s quite probable as it follows a similar aesthetic. We thought of Sandokan because he’s rather popular and the aspect of Sultan Gangplank is rather cartoony; there’s been animated series based on the character. We’ll update the review to add the reference, thanks for the information.

  23. Shouldn’t all his skins have new voiceovers mentioned? They all use Captain Gangplank’s voiceover rather than the base voiceover.

    • If that’s true, at least, we should mention which voice-over set they use. We’ll have to check to make sure as they should’ve been switched when the true Classic Gangplank was released. Perhaps some were forgotten and didn’t receive the change or there’s lingeing bug remaning. It’s something strange as changing the classic skin is something new to champions. We’ll check in-game to make sure and update as necessary. Thanks for the heads-up.

      • Ok, sorry about the info. Just found out it did switch with the true one. But still: would have been cool if his skins used Captain GP’s voiceover instead of the base.

        • Perhaps on a case by case basis it could’ve used the specific voiceover that better suits the personality of each skin. That could’ve added to the personality of each skin and of Gangplank as a whole without any extra work; assets would be reused.

It’s not bad as it is but sometimes with a little more things can be improved in a noticeable way. This may not be the best example but there are many across LoL.

  24. Do you have any idea as to when special Forces GP will be on sale?

    • It was last discounted on August 2015 so it’ll probably take a while to return to a sale. The good news is that sales have expanded so, hopefully, it shouldn’t take a full year for it to return to a sale. This is all speculative as sales are unpredictable but next year should see a discount for Special Forces.

  25. Hey Zero,

I’m just curious. Before the GP rework, did Spooky GP have 5 stars? I am wondering because I could have swore it had less before the rework. Thanks!

  26. there is a spelling mistake on ”powder” in the toy soldier gangplank section (it reads ”poweder”)
    great work

  27. dreadnova gp

  28. hey Zero,

I am split between dreadnova and special forces gangplank in terms of which one i want to buy. I like the mechanical feel of dreadnova gp and the red glowing sword is pretty badass, but special forces gp is also attractive to me. Considering that special forces gp is currently on sale (487 rp) while dreadnova is 1350 rp, which one would you recommend getting? Thanks!

    • Even though Dreadnova Gangplank is a more expensive skin it doesn’t offer that much more over Special Forces. We think that Special Forces is the better skin though there’s much to like in Dreadnova’s dark sci-fi style. With Special Forces on sale, considering you like it, it would be the ideal time to get it. Eventually Dreadnova will go on sale and you can get it then.

An exception could be made if you prefer the sci-fi aspect of Dreadnova to Special Forces. We can see the appeal in the concept. Regardless, it can’t be denied that Special Forces does a great job at standing out. In the end, choose the one you like the most: both are good skin and you should get one you like and will play.

  29. Zero, I love your reviews. I always look at your website before buying any skins. I also like that you reply to all comments. I hope that you do not think that I am just annoying, by saying this… I just want to say that I love your website and think that it is very good.

  30. What do you think is much better? Spooky GP or Minuteman GP?

    • We think that Spooky Gangplank is a more interesting skin. In theory it reuses Captain Gangplank’s model and then changes the textures. However, the glow gives the skin a lot of personality and makes it stand out. Minuteman is a more conventional skin. It’s has a good concept and the result is well done but it doesn’t catch the eye as Spooky does.

  31. Hey Zero, Im having a hard time on picking three of these skins, its SF Gp,Captain Gp, and Dreadnova. I need your opinion on which skin is better.

    • If you want to stay within Gangplank’s lore then Captain is a relevant throwback of his life before Miss Fortune had a say about her parent’s demise. Special Forces ventures beyond the fantasy of League so while it can not fit as well as other skins it has the advantage of having a well defined and appealing identity. Dreadnova is the futuristic sci-fi take on piracy which has a lot too like but also borrows a lot of its charm and even doesn’t step up its offering given the higher price.

We’d recommend Captain or Special Forces depending on which concept you like the most and what you expect from the skin. Dreadnova is a good skin but expensive for what it offers. It has its moments and certainly is appealing overall. Unfortunately, the 1350 RP tier is supposed to go beyond the 975 RP offering and Dreadnova doesn’t do much with the extra leeway. At any rate, consider getting the skins on sale to save on RP; especially if you plan to buy more than one.

      • What are The 2 Best skins for gp(Worth the Price)?

        • If we had to choose only two skins for Gangplank it would be Special Forces and Spooky. We do think that Captain is a great skin but it’s mostly due to the lore significance than the additions; though the model is quite good. The other two skins justify their price with satisfying and appealing changes.

  32. Hey Zero, I found Toy Soldier GP on sale for 52% off, is this skin worth it?

    • There are better skins for the Saltwater Scourge but if you like it then it would probably be the best option to get it. As a legacy skin it will hardly be found on sale. However, be mindful that it’s a rather simple skins with a present but limited charm. If you don’t mind that then Toy Soldier Gangplank could be a good skin for you.

  33. Hey Zero, Dreadnova GP is going on sale soon putting the price to 975 RP. Think it’s worth the buy? Seems like a fitting price for the skin because 1350 RP seems a little pricey.

    • It’ll certainly be a better price. Dreadnova Gangplank is an appealing skin but more effective than surprising. There’s a lot of retreaded ground so at its price tier a more interesting and better realised instead of borrowed identity was expected. In our opinion, we’d wait for a regular sale to get the skin at 675 RP. It’s a good price cut and makes the issues less problematic with respect to price, at least.

At 975 RP, it’s an acceptable purchase. If you like the skin you won’t get disappointed but it’s extra money in comparison with how cheap it could be. In the end, it’s a matter of how much value you see in the skin to determine how much it’s a good price to pay.

  34. Hey Zero What are The top 3 of all gp skins? Pls let me know:)

    • We’d say that Gangplank’s best skins are Spooky, Special Forces and Captain. All are great choices that shouldn’t disappoint a fan of the Saltwater Scourge.

  35. I think Sultan Gangplank has new sounds for his barrels exploding, no?

  36. I kinda want minuteman or bilgewater, only reason why is because everyone has the special forces one, is it a good idea?

    • Perhaps Spooky or Captain Gangplank are better options. The first is quite cheap and also has some nice glows for Ganplank and his kegs. The second is a relevant skin mostly because of lore but also appealing in its classic pirate interpretation. It’s more expensive and doesn’t go beyond model changes. Regardless, for a fan of Gangplank is has meaning.

Minuteman it’s a diversion that’s mostly worthwhile if you are interested in the source material. Something similar happens with Sailor or Sultan. They aren’t bad skins but they don’t offer something as well done as the other skins. Dreadnova is the most expensive and while it offers some nice features it should’ve been more than effective; it should’ve impressed, it had potential to do so.

  37. Hey Zero i just noticed the special shop was open and I got dread Nova gp and Tyrant Swain both at 60% off, wich one do you recomend? I read both reviews but I Endesa up more Confused XD sry for bad grammar I am mexican so english is tough XD

    • Depends what you are looking for, one is sci-fi and the other high fantasy. Both are good skins and 60% off is a good discount for either skins. Assuming you like and play both champions often it’s mostly a matter of taste.

An advantage of Dreadnova Gangplank is that it’s a more original adaptation of the classic champion because it goes from buccaneer to space pirate. Tyrant Swain is a refinement of the classic champion emphasising the dark power with a more fantastic and less gloomy approach.

At a glance, no skin is clearly better than the other. Depending on what you want from each skin you may be able to find which one gives you the best features.
