League of Legends: Caitlyn Skins’ Review – StrategyZero
Aug 302012

Caitlyn, the Sheriff of Piltover
Caitlyn, the Sheriff of Piltover

Caitlyn, the Sheriff of Piltover may be League of Legends’ famous sheriff but her repertoire of clothes allows her quite a bit of variation: from antique hunters to deadly snipers. Read further on this skins’ review and discover which skins make Caitlyn and her rifles shine.

Resistance Caitlyn
Resistance Caitlyn Splash Art Resistance Caitlyn Model
Category: Regular
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Caitlyn geared as a guerrilla soldier.
Model: Major model changes for Caitlyn and new textures for her rifle.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: Resistance Caitlyn’s splash art is impressive. The background sets the frame adequately, not only with a forest but also with the effects of Caitlyn’s activity: empty shells on the ground. Caitlyn looks great in her well delineated clothes, with a focused expression, believable pose and flowing hair. Besides, the rifle lights up the surroundings, Caitlyn and itself with a, maybe, exaggerated but satisfying bang. It’s not a perfect piece: Caitlyn should probably lay her left arm on her knee for a stable support, the background is fuzzy, the bang is overblown and her clothing doesn’t match her in-game look. Regardless, as a whole the piece works and pretty well.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Resistance Caitlyn is, in essence, a guerrilla fighter skin that combines elements from very different sources. Unfortunately, using Caitlyn’s classic model as a base results in a mix of: short dress, reasonable gear and steam-punk rifle that doesn’t work that well. The pastiche of styles results in a skin that tries a more realistic look without taking enough distance from fantasy. As a skin that tries to convey realism and fantasy at the same time, two concepts that are usually opposites, it simply fails. Overall, it’s a passable skin and for the price it’s not a bad product but the attachment to Caitlyn’s classic look affects it too much.

Sheriff Caitlyn
Sheriff Caitlyn Splash Art Sheriff Caitlyn Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Caitlyn as a sexy far west sheriff.
Model: Moderate model changes for Caitlyn and new textures for her rifle.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: Sheriff Caitlyn’s splash art is really well done. The background provides a detailed and fitting setting, despite looking like an abandoned town. Additionally, the sky is a tad simple, the distance fading is somewhat abrupt and there are a few problems with perspective. Caitlyn looks great, with well defined clothes, nice hair and appealing expression. Nonetheless, the rifle is too wide and the lenses appear deformed; especially the bigger one. Overall, this is a nice piece and while it has its flaws it works as a whole.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Sheriff Caitlyn is definitely a sexy take on the far west sheriff but its design successfully makes the look attractive without sexualizing Caitlyn. This is mainly due to the fact that it doesn’t tread far from Caitlyn’s classic style. Therefore, the sheriff style isn’t perfectly executed as the skin does as little as possible to fulfil its objective. In spite of this, it’s a skin that looks good and is alluring. If you don’t mind the lack of resources and style of Sheriff Caitlyn, it’s hardly a bad product.

Safari Caitlyn
Safari Caitlyn Splash Art Safari Caitlyn Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Caitlyn dressed for a safari excursion.
Model: New model for Caitlyn and minor model changes to her rifle.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: In spite of making for an evocative scenery of ruins the background is particularly blurred with inexact lines and muddy colours. This draft feel makes most of the setting feel empty but it still manages to give an interesting frame for Caitlyn to lean on. The safari feel is completely lost but the interaction, even if minimal, with Caitlyn gives the background some significance.
Caitlyn appears completely different from the sketchy background like some specific areas do. Her clean lines, bright colours and pose easily catch the eye. Her pose midway between unassuming and ready to shoot speaks of her skill with her rifle. It manages to be enticing without solely relying on her sex appeal. The lighting adds depth to the depiction but it’s more vivid in Caitlyn. Her hat does appear a bit waxy and the rifle plastic instead of metal and wood. Fortunately, that doesn’t apply to the rest of the clothes and skin. Her hair also looks soft and believable even if the intense sunlight unnecessarily blurs it. In spite of some issues the portrayal is appealing and clearly the high point of the piece.
All in all, the portrayal is quite good but the background is a bit of a mess. It doesn’t fit the safari theme and seems to be a Tomb Raider reference instead. The fact that it’s uneven and mostly empty as well as lacking much relevance makes it much less important that it could’ve been. This makes the splash art good but with noticeable problems.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: A safari skin is quite appropriate for Caitlyn as both sniper and hunter have much in common. The skin is really nice: the clothes are appealing and believable while also practical. The high-heeled boots are acceptable as she shouldn’t need to run much; yet they are bit of a stretch. Besides, the rifle is barely modified to resemble some sort of steam-punk blunderbuss. In spite of the minimal modifications the result is effective: the lenses coupled with the ample muzzle give the rifle and old style that hints at the earliest safari ventures. The problem with Safari Caitlyn is that it definitely is a good skin, but not good enough for its price. It’s a pity that it was made legacy as a simple price reduction would’ve been enough to make it an excellent product.

Arctic Warfare Caitlyn
Arctic Warfare Caitlyn Splash Art Arctic Warfare Caitlyn Model
Category: Regular
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Caitlyn outfitted for warfare in a cold climate.
Model: New model for Caitlyn and her rifle.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: As far as arctic settings go, this piece aims at masking the unnecessary blur of the background as a consequence of the inclement weather. The falling snow is supposed to leave a, reasonably, hazy background behind Caitlyn and that’s acceptable to a point. When the tank that’s just behind Caitlyn is also diffuse then neither depth of field nor weather can be justification. A good part is also just filler: some rocks and trees to the left, ample snow and a lot of sky. In fact, only the tank seems relevant. Said vehicle has a notoriously sketchy depiction due to inexact lines and colours that look washed out. The complex surfaces appear flat as the elevations on each element are far from convincing. The peculiar design of the tank is of little concern then.
In spite of all this, Caitlyn’s depiction is quite good. In fact, it’s a great depiction with a soft but appealing use of sunlight. The lines are tidy and exact while the colours can seem cartoony but fit the style rather well. Her face has softer shading than other areas, like her boots or sunbathing zone, but as the shading is soft it transitions rather well from region to region. Her rifle doesn’t have the right proportions as it does in-game and appears malformed. The stock is too big with an unrecognizable shape while the forestock is too thick, the barrel is too short, the muzzle thick, the magazine tiny and the trigger guard lacking the curved design it should have.
Even though there are many issues Caitlyn’s portrayal is attractive thanks to the warmth of the depiction. The rifle is an obstacle that gets in the way more than a display of the tool of her trade. The background intends to give a reasonable context and while the intention is good the result is clearly uneven. This makes a splash art that presents a nice spotlight for Caitlyn but with obvious problems.

Conclusion: Winter clothing isn’t known for making its wearer seductive but in this case the form fitting attire enhances Caitlyn’s lean silhouette. On top of that, the clothes are elegant, realistic and simply good looking. Moreover, the rifle is nicely designed, looking functional and modern yet with a certain old style about it. The textures are quite good as the fur, wood and cloth folds are nicely defined. Overall, Arctic Warfare Caitlyn is a very good looking skin, perfect for those that would like a believably dressed sniper, sans high-heels, for a change.

Officer Caitlyn
Officer Caitlyn Splash Art Officer Caitlyn Model
Category: Regular
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Caitlyn as a sexualized police sniper.
Model: Major model changes for Caitlyn and new model for her rifle.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: Officer Caitlyn’s splash art can barely be considered passable because it should be much better than this. The background is little more than a blur that barely lets a police car visible to Caitlyn’s left. While the composition uses the background as a complement to the foreground, instead of a as a setting, the result isn’t good. The same can be said about Caitlyn, her pose is dynamic but unfitting for a sniper. Furthermore, while the clothes are alright, the angry face doesn’t suit Caitlyn and her right arm seems inexplicably absent. As if this wasn’t enough her legs look deformed: it’s proportions and placement look wrong. Even the rifle doesn’t accurately represent the massive piece of technology that the skin does show. All things considered, this is a bad piece; it does what it’s supposed to but in a flawed way.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Officer Caitlyn is a skin that can be divided in two: one part very good and the other not so much. The rifle is quite impressive with its lean design and astounding scope; it really looks like a great tool for a sniper. Conversely, Caitlyn’s outfit doesn’t look that great. The overall idea seems to be that of a sexualized policewoman but the end result doesn’t convince. For example, almost all skins have Caitlyn wearing high heels, regardless of suitability. However, the one skin that goes all out for sex appeal has her wearing low heeled boots. The skirt is practically a re-texture of her classic skin and though passable it simply doesn’t match the chosen police style; just like the tall hat. Even her top doesn’t further the police concept with a badge, instead preferring a tie. On the whole, the skin does deliver the general idea but it doesn’t execute it well; even to the point of detracting from it. In conclusion, Officer Caitlyn is a thorough disappointment that only offers a neat looking rifle as its single saving grace. Unless the rifle wins you over, or you have a thing for underdressed figures of authority, better avoid this skin.

Headhunter Caitlyn
Headhunter Caitlyn Splash Art Headhunter Caitlyn Model
Category: Regular
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Caitlyn as a futuristic hunter.
Model: New model for Caitlyn and her rifle.
Particles: New particles for her abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Animations: New rifle animations when standing idle, joke, auto-attack, Headshot, Piltover Peacemaker, 90 Caliber Net and Ace in the Hole. New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for her abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Splash Art: Under the rain a dark jungle extends its twisted branches. One could say that it’s a sea of bark with nothing definite in it. As a setting, the background is more of a frame than an actual place. However, Caitlyn’s depiction is the complete opposite: clear, colourful and attractive. The excellent use of colour allows lights to shine and drops to glow with the unexplained, eerie glow behind Caitlyn. Nevertheless, the attention to detail lets Caitlyn appear alive; much like her rifle. The only qualm is that her weapon covers much of her body and so a good part of her isn’t visible. The pose still allows a reasonable view of her aspect but rather incomplete. All things considered, it’s a piece with an unassuming background and an excellent portrayal.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: With an attractive yet practical appearance Headhunter Caitlyn is a clearly fictional but surely appealing skin for the Sheriff. The outfit is sensible, striking a good balance between form and function. Caitlyn looks sexy but also dangerous without being half-naked or buried in armour. Her rifle follows suit with an unusual design yet its new animations display advanced technology as well as lethality. The new particles add cohesion and a fitting degree of eye-catching visuals; the red lasers and bladed designs are eloquent enough about the advanced and deadly weaponry in use. They are complemented by the new sounds though they round the skin more than stand out on their own. Special mention deserves Ace in the Hole as the particles and sounds make it an even more satisfying moment as well as the new visor animation. On the whole, the hunter theme is clear in all aspects of the skin; recall included, though one could wish for more use of the visor. In conclusion, Headhunter Caitlyn is an excellent skin with lots of pleasing modifications that successfully adapts the Sheriff to wilder game.

Lunar Wraith Caitlyn
Lunar Wraith Caitlyn Splash Art Lunar Wraith Caitlyn Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Caitlyn as a dreamlike markswoman.
Model: New model for Caitlyn and her rifle.
Particles: New particles for her abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for Headshot, Piltover Peacemaker, Ace in the Hole, auto-attack and recall.
Splash Art: To one side, a lady stands altered by magic. On the other side, another sits elegant and mysterious. Behind them there are heavy, solid clouds or a low cavern ceiling; who can truly say? A few scaly bodies appear nearby, perhaps ethereal snakes that answer to the ladies presence. Nothing is certain, it’s an oneiric chaos that shows a lot but says little.
The ladies are a different matter, though. Caitlyn is the one that more clearly displays the effect of this dream on her persona. The sharp lines and vivid colours attract the eye but her slender, even weak, frame and are as alien as her right arm and long ears. Her rifle looks fascinating and questions easily gather as to the nature of its mechanisms. She doesn’t seem as familiar as one would expect her to be; in fact, she looks like another person. Of course, all the mystery doesn’t dare to interfere with an unnecessary dose of cleavage.
Sitting opposite her we find Morgana exuding class. Her appearance is as alluring as it is classy but the suggestion made by the naked back is clear. Fur appears dull and waxy but the metal decorations glint above the pervading dimness. Her skirt lights up with the mystic forces around, just like her visible eye, and invigorate the bland aspect of her skin. The blurry happenings around her right arm add to the mystery despite looking unnecessarily drab. While we may not be able to get a full view of her dress, the pose suits her well.
When we add it all together we find a piece that lets two ladies share the spotlight with equal measure. They both appear relevant and attractive and even display a duality between light and shade that ends up benefiting Caitlyn more than Morgana. Regardless, both are captivating and present appealing portrayals before a setting that tries to be so mysterious and dreamlike that more than surreal appears chaotic and undefined. This results in a piece that doesn’t expose the supernatural aspects of the theme as clearly as it should. More oneiric that anything else, both ladies are enticing but struggle to offer more than a good pose in a nice portrayal.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Visually, Lunar Wraith Caitlyn is an attractive and pleasing skin. With a distinct style that is both elegant as well as oneiric she easily stands apart from the usual sniper look. The dress is elaborate and classy and her rifle takes both aspects a step further. Of course, such attention to form leaves several doubts about how plausible and practical it is to go about shooting with such gear. However, if the skin sets itself only to provide an interesting appearance it is effective at it. It isn’t very believable but manages to compensate with an unusual aspect that stays close to the fantastic.
That’s also part of the skin’s problem. Caitlyn looks like an extravagant lady with a strange taste and, with a pinch of imagination, she appears unreal like escaped from a dream. Nevertheless, there’s little evidence of her wraith nature in the skin and she also lacks the vibrancy displayed in the splash art. There’s only a large blue eye on the rifle and the strange shape of her right arm, which could be a peculiar sleeve from the look of things, to present her supernatural life. These elements don’t really convey the feel of a spirit; less so anything snake related. Instead, it seems like a strange ornamentation or a dream-like woman with some weird aspects. That is emphasised by the decorative aesthetic that, far from being wraithlike, looks colourful and fantastic.
The particles and sounds follow the same trend. They do appear different but the blue design and soft sounds don’t feel like coming from a wraith. It all seems magical but lacks the impact expected from a spirit. Perhaps it’s a matter of what kind of image a wraith brings to the mind. In that case, Caitlyn remains closer to the extravagant but classy lady with magic powers more than a spirit. Her recall aims at stating the wraith theme with more clarity but, again, can seem more dreamlike than wraithlike.
All things said and done, Lunar Wraith Caitlyn is an appealing skin that may not evoke the expected image and sound of a wraith but that presents an attractive oneiric aesthetic; at best. The price is rather hefty for a re-model with new particles, sounds and recall, though. While attractive there’s nothing here that doesn’t fit at 975 RP. Add to this unclear focus of her appearance plus diluted theme and we are left with a skin that can be quite interesting but that doesn’t present its personal allure as it should.

Pulsefire Caitlyn
Pulsefire Caitlyn Splash Art Pulsefire Caitlyn Model
Category: Legendary
Price: 1820 RP
Concept: Caitlyn as a futuristic warrior employing cybernetic equipment.
Model: New model for Caitlyn and two models for her rifle; with and without levelling Ace in the Hole. Now glow on her back and levelled rifle for Headshot stacks, new cup for her taunt and new hats for her recall.
Particles: New particles for her abilities, auto-attack, emotes, death, respawn, first levelling Ace in the Hole and recall.
Animations: New animations for her abilities, auto-attack, standing idle, walking, high speed run, emotes, death, respawn, tower channel and recall.
Sounds: New sounds for her abilities, auto-attack, emotes, high speed run, death, respawn, first levelling Ace in the Hole and recall. New voice-over as well as new quotes for her abilities, buying items, specific interactions with certain champions, starting the game and killing enemies.
Splash Art: An empty wasteland behind, but not so empty, futuristic ruins are visible and in the middle a portal opens for the traveller to arrive. Catilyn and ruins aside, the setting is devoid of personality. Neither land nor sky say anything about the context. The ruins add something but it’s not clear what. They could’ve been the frame of a storehouse, hangar or something more. Perhaps it’s a gateway for her portal; even if it seems that she may not need one, maybe for long distance travel. The msytery is interesting but there’s too little to deduce on.
There’s little doubt then that Caitlyn is the central character and that everything else takes second place; at best. Her almost inhuman eyes easily grab one’s attention as well as her stern face and flowing yet tidily arranged hair. There’s an obvious abscence in her lack of a hat; which has always been part of her identity. The armour seems practical and elaborate. The decoration seems to be mostly functional with well delineated designs for the plates. The legs are absent from view and the subtle grid on the thighs is, perhaps, too small of a reference to the portal-aided trip. The large neckpiece strikes as an odd exaggeration. It spreads with an evident effort to catch the eye, even more so thatn her armour lights, which seems and odd, out of place flair of flamboyance; a hat would’ve added style better.
The rifle is a nice piece of craftmanship. Colours are a bit subdued, strange for being under a desert-like Sun, but the clear shapes and sharp, even if few, shadows make it believable. In spite of its size it doesn’t get in the way of Caitlyn so that it allows a good view of her. The energy at its core seems a bit too timid but the eloquence of the design, viability aside, makes it the secondary character in the piece; a place well earned.
All added together, the setting tries to say something but gives too little to work on. The rest is just hollow, impersonal wasteland that fill space more than anything else. Fortunately, Caitlyn and her rifle make a rather striking appartion. The colours are somewhat shy but there’s a quiet strength, supported by her concentrated visage, that speaks about her determination well enough. Overall, it’s a great portrayal of Caitlyn along her tool of trade.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Pulsefire Caitlyn is more than a simple sci-fi version of the Sheriff. The idea is to transport her law enforcement through the ages and, essentially, turn her into a time cop; most obvious thanks to her new voice-over. In that regard, there’s much that is appealing in the skin but the new model, sadly, isn’t the best exponent. The futuristic armour, for all the elaborate intensity displayed in the splash art, appears dull and simple. There’s only a shadow of the design shown in two dimensions. On top of that, her stylistic choices are more obvious. The leather jacket and boots, even if futuristically stylish, can feel out of place. However, they don’t join a hat as a testament of Caitlyn’s distinct personality. Why the hat was omitted when jacket and boots are, practically, decoration is difficult to understand. The fact that hat assets are present and that togglable or switchable hats could make the skin more interesting feels like a wasted opportunity. At least, her nice blue hair is easily visible.
The rifle doesn’t suffer from such problems. The basic version, without levelling Ace in the Hole, offers a lean barrel backed by a powerful engine. The elaborate, almost prototype-like, design speaks of cutting edge technology. When Ace in the Hole becomes a possibility the changes aren’t as large in scope as they could be but they are effective. With barrel reinforced by, perhaps, additional generators the rifle seems more responsive to abilities and looks like a finished and powerful piece of weaponry.
Particles, much like sounds, follow a specific design that ends up being quite attractive even if there is a clear, rigid blueprint that both follow. While particles employ bright and colourful splashes of sprinkling energy the sounds reflect such fluid behaviour with muffled whiplashes for shots and more digitally, high-pitched tones for abilities with more of a technological display. What stands out the most is the various indicators and HUD elements added to the abilities: Headshots, Yordle Snap Traps and, without a doubt, Ace in the Hole. It’s also interesting how the grid effects are used when items appear like traps, also when they snap, and the rifle transformation at the beginning of the ultimate.
While everything tends to be strict in the direction it goes there’s consistency that makes the message clear. This is further supported by emotes which make use of the rifle in various ways; a versatile piece of equipment indeed. It’s even better because the development of the Pulsefire personality doesn’t stop there. When running at high speed the rifle makes for a swiftly ready floating bike. The recall also takes advantage of the rifle by opening a portal which Caitlyn makes use for her travels through time and space. The joke on hats adds little to the skin given that they are irrelevant in the larger scheme of things. The death isn’t as clear, though. Instead of the rifle opening a portal for Caitlyn to flee or suffering a malfunction she simply vanishes in thin air. It’s a good effect but such independence from the rifle comes out of nowhere; after all, she even leaves it behind.
Conversely, the rest of animations aren’t particularly different from the classic ones. Specifically, auto-attacks and abilities don’t show Caitlyn acting any different from her usual self. Fortunately, the rifle steps in for a much needed dose of personality on the auto-attacks as well as Piltover Peacemaker and, most prominently, in Ace in the Hole. This reminds not just a tiny bit of Headhunter Caitlyn. In a way, Pulsefire feels like a brighter take on the same futuristic sniper but as a cop instead of a hunter. The good thing is that the skin manages to define its unique features rather well.
Adding it all together, even if Pulsefire Caitlyn isn’t an ultimate skin it’s certainly a very good legendary. The model simply disappoints and doesn’t fulfil the expectations of neither Pulsefire armour nor that of a futuristic policewoman. In fact, it’s the weakest part of the skin; the lack of a hat doesn’t help either as it makes little sense given her casual clothing. The rifle, particles and sounds paint a different picture though. They paint the time cop picture quite well, actually. There are features borrowed from Headhunter but used to develop the skin’s personality. It all comes together to a rather good skin that fulfils its premise despite some notorious mishaps.

Pool Party Caitlyn
Pool Party Caitlyn Splash Art Pool Party Caitlyn Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Caitlyn wearing a bikini and wielding a water rifle.
Model: New model for Caitlyn and her rifle plus new translucent shirt.
Particles: New water particles for her abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Animations: New animations for her shirt and new recall animation.
Sounds: New water sounds for her abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Splash Art: With the fitting background of a pool there’s a good amount of water to look at. In spite of this, the water doesn’t appear crystalline and fresh and can seem gelatinous. The dull highlights and low transparency of the surface, despite the clear colour, make the water feel muddy. It’s still good enough to pass for a cartoon pool. Besides, the many cameos all around the pool add a lot of personality to what otherwise is a simple setting.
Three champions share the spotlight. Starting from the right we find Caitlyn relaxing in an inflatable flamingo. As there’s no obvious water war in place holding the rifle seems unnecessary but could pass for a professional habit or precaution. For the most part, Caitlyn shows clear lines but murky colours which give her depiction a sketchy feel. Her look is clear enough though but a look at her rifle shows that things could’ve been much clearer.
Zoe is the next and, in mid air after a ball, she’s surely enjoying herself. Her depiction is, understandably, more comical and cartoony than other champions. However, that doesn’t solve the problem of her left leg appearing noticeably longer than her right one; perspective and position taken into account. That aside, the shading is soft for skin and swimsuit but sometimes it looks sketchy. The swimsuit ruffles are nicely detailed and while the hair appears a bit solid it does look wet and watery in its transition to liquid.
Gangplank is the final champion and he’s a busy one. Hard at work at his barbecue it seems odd to put so much emphasis on his water pistol at the absence of a water war. His appearance is cartoony and colours become dull and diffuse from to head to toe; that may make sense on the smoky grill but not in a clear top-down view. Some diffuse food appears on a plate nearby: if they are oranges they barely look round enough and the same if they are bread rolls. Still, it’s a little corner of the piece where he’s king.
Overall, this is a splash art that effectively shares room between three champions. However, their presence isn’t always as relevant and interesting as others: some are just there while others act out a role. Add to this the need for polish to better present certain elements and we have a piece that would welcome some improvements. It doesn’t stop it from being an effective and fitting portrayal, though.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Pool Party Caitlyn is a straightforward yet appealing skin. There’s a clear amount of sex appeal thanks to the bikini. Besides, hat and translucent shirt add a classy style to her looks. Not everything works well. The strap on her left thigh doesn’t make much sense, though. Additionally, her sandals are a bit weird looking and, especially because of the large gap visible between her big and index toes plus their size; which makes the feet look deformed. A close look shows that it’s because feet are modelled as a textured boot which seems a lazy approach for a skin in this day and age. The rest of her body is nicely modelled which is quite good but also raises question about the overall quality. Her rifle is a large plastic toy but as professional as a water warrior would require. It could be said that it fits Caitlyn’s expertise and seems like a powerful choice for a water war.
Particles for all auto-attacks and abilities become a varied assortment of splashes. From big to small every shot sees splashes that are actually different yet end up all feeling the same. Except for the ice cream traps and starfish net employed by Yordle Snap Trap and 90 Caliber Net, respectively, it’s all splashes of water. It’s not that these additions make these abilities stand out but that the rest is too homogeneous. For all intents and purposes it’s the size of the splash that matters. Still, it has to be admitted that the water effects are consistent and effective.
Sounds accompany visuals hand in hand. For every visible splash of water there’s an associated sound to make the effects believable. This also means that sounds feel homogeneous too and that there aren’t any real highlights. Regardless, they provide effective support to the water particles.
The new recall shows Caitlyn getting comfortable in a reclining chair. It doesn’t say much but it’s suitable. Kicking the poor Kermit the Crab once Caitlyn arrives at the fountain seems rather out of character of her. It may be funny, for some, but it surely doesn’t strike as the kind of behaviour the Sheriff of Piltover would condone.
All added together, Pool Party Caitlyn is a skin with some issues but also, at the end of it all, it’s effective. The water effects are appealing and convincing and the summer holiday theme is clearly displayed in the skin. To a point it could be a cartoony Water Caitlyn and that’s hardly a bad thing. It would be nice if some extra polish would take care of some rough spots and added some variety. That would be needed for the skin to excel.

Conclusion

Caitlyn’s skins are all more than just re-textures but that doesn’t mean that their quality doesn’t cover the entire spectrum. Headhunter Caitlyn is the recommended skin thanks to its attractive concept and fantastic implementation. The modifications to the skin accomplish a different and appealing look that fans of the Sheriff will surely enjoy.

A great alternative is Arctic Warfare Caitlyn with its lean and reasonable appearance. Its style and design are not only consistent but also appealing while reinforcing Caitlyn’s sniper side.

As far as unusual and attractive, Lunar Wraith Caitlyn is a skin with much to offer. While she can be a mere extravagant lady she can also surface as a strange dreamlike sniper. The wraith idea doesn’t convince but there’re magical elements that supplement the unique aesthetic. Sadly, the price bears no relation to how much the skin offers and with its peculiar focus it feels like a skin that doesn’t try enough to appeal.

Both Resistance Caitlyn and Sheriff Caitlyn are cheaper alternatives that even though far from excellence do provide enough to make them worthwhile despite their limitations.

Officer Caitlyn is a skin that ends as a mishmash of elements that barely work together to deliver their concept. It’s not a horrible skin, the notion of an attractive police officer comes through, barely, and the rifle is great. Still, it’s an obvious case of a concept not well executed.

The legendary option is Pulsefire Caitlyn. Following on the footsteps of Headhunter, Pulsefire defines a bright sci-fi identity of time cop permeated over most of the skins features. The model, sadly, is a letdown that doesn’t make the most of the futuristic theme but many other facets, like particles and sounds, effectively realise the concept. In spite of some problems, this is a legendary skin that brings forth its premise quite well.

Pool Party Caitlyn is a skin that delivers the summer holiday spirit it proposes. Water effects are appealing and believable and Caitlyn is nicely dressed for the occasion. It’s a pity that there are some rough patches in the model and there’s little variety in the particles and sounds. Regardless, the result is certainly good.

  2. Thanks for the reviews.

  3. Well haven’t really gotten a chance to play her yet, but I have a few friends that was playing her and played against a few that was annoying. They were probably fed a little, but they were doing a large amount of damage. But, how she is good in lol compared to other ranged carries like Miss Fortune or Ashe etc.

    • Caitlyn offers some unique tools of her own: long range and zone control with her traps. Tristana also has long range but only late game. Thanks to her constant long range Caitlyn can deal damage without retribution and so win the lane and stay safe in team-fights. Besides, the traps work as wards and also stun enemies which can be devastating as she would build only damage.

This is just our humble opinion. More professional advice could be more practical; like build guides.

  4. Hi strategy zero,
I was just wondering why you rated officer caitlyn very low. I find that skin to be really good because of its excellent model. Anyway, what are the things that u dont like about officer caitlyn. Finally, do u think it is worth it for 975 rp? Thanks

    • Oh i forgot to add.l.ur reviews are awesome!!!

    • Glad that you like our reviews.

The biggest problem with Officer Caitlyn is that her outfit doesn’t clearly convey the image of a police officer. Additionally, while the idea of sex appeal is clear it isn’t implemented with finesse. For instance, her skirt is a mere re-texture of her classic one, her boots have low heels and, why is she wearing a tie instead of a badge? At least her rifle looks great but, sadly, Caitlyn doesn’t really embody the sexy officer concept that the skin set to achieve.

We don’t think it’s a skin worth 975 RP. If you really like her rifle and overall concept getting it while on sale could be an option. However, be mindful that the skin isn’t the best it could’ve been.

  5. Hi there! I love your blog and I always check it to see what you think of the skins before I buy.
I have a question for you today: What do you think of the Headhunter Caitlyn skin from the previews that we can see?

    Thanks.

    • Glad that you like it.

The idea is quite nice but her outfit seems unnecessarily skimpy. It might be understandable for Headhunter Nidalee, as she’s a predator, but Caitlyn should look like a deadly futuristic sniper instead of simply wearing a brief dress made of metal.

  6. Hey can you do a review on Headhunter Caitlyn? Thanks.

  7. Headhunter Cait splash bothers me so much. It’s like they drew the gun and then drew her; if you try to follow her spine, it becomes remarkably clear that her head could not possibly be where it is with that pose. In all ways it looks like her head is detached from the rest of her body, and it ruins the skin for me.

    • She doesn’t seem to be the only contortionist in the League. Still, remember that a splash art is just a presentation card for a skin. The actual Headhunter Caitlyn is a good skin and stands apart from the splash art.

  8. Hi, will you be doing reviews of the chromas?

  9. Caitlyn musketeers, why not?

  10. you saw the new lunar reveal skin have you got a pbe acc to test her?

    • We gave it a quick look and it seems a bit overloaded. The concept doesn’t seem too clear except for having an Eastern style. We’ll give it a more detailed look for the review and see what it all amounts to. Could be an interesting skin, we’ll have to check it more thoroughly.

  11. shoudl i get officer or headhunte

    • We’d recommend Headhunter Caitlyn over Officer. The former has an attractive sci-fi theme with an execution that brings out the best in it. Officer is a re-model that can be appealing but doesn’t do enough to be special.

  12. hey zero! any thoughts about the cait chroma pack?

  13. Will lunar wraith Caitlyn be released again during lunar revel? I want that skin so bad…

    • It sure should be available again during Lunar Revel. Chances are that it’ll be a similar even to Snowdown Showdown with all the legacy skins returning as well as collected in yearly bundles.

  14. Hey Zero, any early thoughts on Pulsefire Caitlyn? I’m not really sure what to think of it as of this moment. As a Cait main, it’s a skin that I’ve always wanted for her, since it seems so fitting for her theme.

    • First things first: why doesn’t Pulsefire Caitlyn wear a hat? She seems to have a good selection and, given the joke, it could even be a switchable asset. This is something that can’t be explained. No hat it’s a problem.

That said, Pulsefire Caitlyn seems to draw quite a bit of its identity from Headhunter but with a lighter sci-fi take. The approach of hi-tech sniping is present in both skins and while Pulsefire has some extra work we find that it doesn’t push the envelope as much as we would’ve hoped. For example, in terms of animations it seems like a lot went into the rifle but Caitlyn acts similar to how she classicaly does. That can be understandable but a legendary is supposed to set itself apart in all regards.

Bottom line, it’s a good skin that lacks a hat. We expected more, we haven’t closely checked the skin yet, but it surely needs a hat.

      • I for one am quite happy there is no hat. Very often Riot tries to stay as close to the classic silhouette as possible and that is sometimes negative for the skin and concept. Pulsefire is supposed to feel like a futuristic extension of Cait rather than a completely different Cait, so the removal of the hat actually feels fresh. She wears light, sci-fi armor which wouldn’t really mix well with hats. I think hats are rather unnecessary in a sci-fi skin, and that’s actually one of my main critiques of Headhunter – the hat just looks bad, even if the skin is good. By trying to strictly conform to the default silhouette, Headhunter kind of kills it for me. Pulsefire is actually brave enough to deviate, among other things.

        • We do like how the visor adds to the Headhunter identity; though it should’ve been taken advantage of for the ultimate as well. In the case of Headhunter we think that the headgear makes sense; though a proper hat probably wouldn’t.

We understand and even agree to a point. If Caitlyn was wearing advanced Pulsefire armour then a hat wouldn’t fit; perhaps a visor or helmet. However, the armour looks simple and even primitive so the hi-tech feel isn’t well conveyed.

Besides, she wears jacket and boots which look rather casual so a hat wouldn’t be so out of place. The fact that there are already hat assets for the recall means that they could be made to be toggleable so you could choose which hat, if any, she would wear.

If we were talking about a fully sci-fi look then we agree: a hat would feel out of place. In this case, Caitlyn wear armour, not advanced enough, but even that aside, she also wears casual clothing. With that in mind. the hat seems missing.

          • I agree to a point. The armor, at least in concepts and model, is actually quite nice and advanced – what makes it look casual is the leather sheriff coat and her boots, which is a reference to her sheriff identity and the Wild West. In that sense a cowboy hat is the only appropriate thematic hat – the sci fi elements would not support it, but her leather elements would. I think one reason the model looks a bit simpler is because of the weapon and how big and animated it is – while Cait looks good, the weapon is more eye-catching.

I still think Pulsefire is worth 4 stars, given it is so well done and is a legendary – it is of very high quality.

          • We don’t think that a legendary skin has any excuse for reaching a balance between developping the weapon or the character. We agree: a cowboy hat or similar that matches coat and boots would finish the casual layer of the skin. It wouldn’t feel out of place. If the skin were all armour like Pulsefire Ezreal then the hat could’ve been excused and perhaps a visor or googles could be added; something else.

The skin is quite good and we do see much to like. We simply can’t ignore the low points of a legendary skin. The model isn’t all that it could be and, in fact, may be the weakest point. As a legendary skin, it’s a problem. It doesn’t ruin the skin but it’s something that can’t be ignored.

          • Would just like to add that something you seem to have missed in your review of Headhunter and in this comment is that Headhunter Cait’s ultimate animation actually does use the visor- if you watch closely as she prepares to fire her ult, she lowers the visor as she aims and then raises it after releasing the shot. This can be seen quite clearly if you watch some of the spotlight videos showcasing the skin. It’s a nice touch that adds a bit to the skin, although it is very easy to miss in-game.

          • You are right and we are aware but checked the review to find no mention of it. Thanks for bringing it to our attention it deserves to be noted in the review.

  15. Which one is better Headhunter Caitlyn or Lunar Wrait Caitlyn. I cant decide

    • As the rating shows we prefer Headhunter over Lunar Wraith Caitlyn. Both are charming skins but we find the former better realised than the latter. Regardless, it’s a matter of personal preference. If you really like Lunar Wraith then that’s the one you should get because you like it; doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.

  16. Headhunter or lunar for caitlyn
Which skin is better and which skin should I buy first

    • We’d recommend Headhunter Caitlyn. It’s a great skin with many and appealing features. It’s a bit on the grim and gritty but it’s nothing exaggerated and suits the Sheriff rather well. Lunar Wraith is good and has interesting elements but it doesn’t come acorss as well realised. We’d recommend to get Headhunter on sale and then see if you can get Lunar Wraith during Lunar Revel; perhaps with a discount too.

  17. Good Day Zero,

I have the Headhunter skin already but the Pulsefire Caitlyn looks really appealing.. I also have the budget for it, I saved the money but you rated it only 4 stars. I’m an ADC main Diamond 2 currently on PH Server(TRASH SERVER) and have almost all good skins for my adc, Project: ASHE(even tho you only rated this 3 stars, I got it from hextech chest), Star Guardian Jinx(this is also 4 stars just like PF Caitlyn), 3 vayne skins, Arclight Varus(you rated this 4 stars, was kinda little disappointed I disenchanted the Dark Star Varus I saw it on MSI(Not sure) and looks really cool tho!. Project: Lucian and too many to mention. Do you think having the PF Caitlyn is better than the Headhunter one if you can buy it or no?

    • More than Headhunter and Pulsefire being a case of better or worse we see them as complementary skins for Caitlyn. Both are sci-fi skins but one is grim and gritty while the other is vivid and light. Depending on what theme you like the most one may appeal more than the other. For their price tier both are great skins though Pulsefire could’ve pushed the envelope a bit more with the transformations.

If you like Pulsefire Caitlyn remember that in a few months, usually around six, it’ll go on early sale so you can get it for 1350 RP. At that price, if you like the skin then there’s little reason to avoid it; the early sale may be the only time legendary skins go on sale, as of now.

Something else you mention. Dark Star Varus may be better to craft for free in comparison with Arclight Varus. We found Arclight very well realised whithin its tier but Dark Star didn’t fulfil the theme’s expectations well enough. Regardless, it has its charm so it you really like it it’s only a matter of getting lucky with hextech or paying hard cash. Either way, give it a good look to be sure that it doesn’t let down.

    • Thank you so much for your reply. I’ll buy it as soon as it go on an early sale! (= More power.

  18. I have all of Caitlyn’s skins and I think they’re all quite nice. Her first five skins have no particle/animation changes are just mainly outfit changes. I think that Arctic Warfare is the best of the bunch and that Officer is the worse considering you can purchase Headhunter for the same price. Officer is a huge disappointment for me because her Classic Skin already shows the “sexy cop” persona and Officer could have been a skin of Caitlyn with appropriate clothing at a higher rank/a more grown up and experienced Caitlyn.

I noticed that Lunar Wraith Caitlyn has recoloured particles from her Base Particles for her Passive indicator around her arms and the Ultimate Particle that appears on her Ult target. This is really disappointing since Headhunter the cheaper one has unique particles for both the Passive Indicator and the Ultimate Particle and I’d rate it a 1 star or 2 star if I am being generous. Lunar Wraith Caitlyn’s hair is also huge and stationary making it stand out and look very weird as it is the only thing that is not animated during her movement and spells.

I deeply regret this purchase and feel cheated especially because Riot mentioned it was rushed due to time limitations. Headhunter’s Rifle has unique animations for her joke, crit, autos and ult while Lunar Wraith uses base rifle animations. I feel Headhunter is way superiour with more particles and even has a lower price so I’d recommend anyone to go with Headhunter over Lunar Wraith.

Regarding Pulsefire Caitlyn, I think this skin is really well done and I actually like her outfit (yes I know unpopular opinion). The animations that the gun has is beyond amazing, looking at those animations in slow motion makes you appreciate how much work went into the skin although it can be very hard to notice during gameplay which I feel takes away some of its value. Compared to recent Legendary Skins (God fist Lee, Dawnbringer Riven and Nightbringer Yasuo) I think Pulsefire Caitlyn had the most work done to it and provides a whole different feel/fantasy than her other skins which Lee’s and Yasuo’s legendary skins fail to do thus making it 5 stars in my opinion.

Overall I think Headhunter and Pulsefire are the skins that give you the most for your money which is why I suggest purchasing one of them. Arctic Warfare and Resistance are also an option if you prefer a simpler skin that is cheaper.

Thanks so much for this guide and these are just my opinions so feel free to ignore them if you want.

    • Not at all, thanks for the comprehensive assessment. We agree in most terms. Among re-models Arctic Warfare is one of the best skins. Headhunter is a fantastic option that offers a lot and is fair priced. Lunar Wraith definitely has some need for extra work to polish and better develop its concept. We like Pulsefire Caitlyn but we feel that the rifle ended up getting more work and is more interesting than Caitlyn. Surely, her weapon is iconic but as a legendary skin she should also have a clear and interesting identity. That doesn’t always come through in the skin.

All in all, we second your recommendations. Headhunter Catilyn is a skin that simply doesn’t disappoint. If you want a nice re-model then Arctic Warfare is a nice option. Finally, for dedicated fans Pulsefire Caitlyn is a skin with appeal.

  19. If I were to buy a Caitlyn skin between Lunar Wraith and Headhunter, which one would you suggest me to buy!
Thanks and btw your reviews are awesome!!

    • Not at all, glad that you like the reviews.

We’d recommend Headhunter Caitlyn without a doubt. It’s simply an excellent skin with a lot to like. Lunar Wraith does have nice features but they end up not coming together to a cohesive and interesting whole. It’s still a skin to consider but Headhunter, especially on sale, is a skin that shouldn’t disappoint any fan of the Sheriff.

  20. Hey Zero,

I got Lunar Wraith Caitlyn in my ‘my shop’
I’ve always wanted that skin, but now I got Pulsefire I’ve decided not to buy it.
I do think it’s a really nice skin, just not worth 1350 RP.
If I didn’t have Pulsefire Caitlyn I would have bought it without a doubt.
How much do you think Lunar Wraith Caitlyn is worth?
    I got it for a 40% discount (=810 RP)

Thank you for all the reviews!

    • Not at all. Considering that Lunar Wraith Caitlyn is a legacy skin it will be very difficult to see a discount on it. Of course, it’s a skin with problems. We said in the review that it seems like a 975 RP skin so 810 RP doesn’t seem like a bad price.

On the other hand, no point in buying a skin, no matter how cheap, if you won’t play it. If you like Pulsefire better then Lunar Wraith won’t be used much. It can also depend on how much you play Caitlyn and how much you like Lunar Wraith. Another skin adds variety if you play a lot and the skin does have appeal. It simply could’ve better realised its theme.

  21. I’m honestly pretty disappointed by the pool party Caitlyn skin. It feels too sexualized even though Rito admitted oversexualizing her doesn’t make sense for her personality. The other pool party skins released were so much better executed that I just feel like it’s Caitlyn in a bikini…with a plastic watergun. That would be fine, but I think 975 would be a more justifiable price for it. At 1350 I expected a lot more to be done with the gun animations. I feel like Riot has been putting more effort into recall animations than the more used effects, which seems like a waste to me unless the recall animation is particularly funny or special (sushi nami). I’d rather see an exciting effect for something I’m going to be doing every 20 seconds versus every three minutes.

    • Completely agree with you. A recall, like emotes, are only used a portion of the time while abilities, auto-attacks, walking and other similar actions get done constantly. That’s where most of the work should be. Pool Party Caitlyn seems to follow the old dogma of: if it’s not broken don’t fix it. Sexy Caitlyn with water splashes works but it certainly is a shallow approach. Water Sniper Caitlyn, that could be more interesting.

  22. Hi Zero, do you know when will the November early sales starts? it’s almost December n yet theres no sign of it coming.

This year’s Pool Party skins should be the ones on sale.

  23. Sorry, I’m must have a rant right now since it’s smashing keyboard wasn’t enough to be honest. Why did they clearly ruined the Arcade-Battle Boss subset skin line with relesing ANOTHER Kai’sa, MORE damn Mr. Broom Hair [he didn’t deserve to mention] and then Caitlyn who got Pool Party last year. Maybe… Caitlyn isn’t that bad but there’s Prestige Edition, your favorite enemy in the page.

I thought Battle Academia choice was bad but hell i found the worst. On the other hand, I’m fine with Qiyana, it’s not the rare case of humanoid Battle Boss since Malzahar and Brand but her arrogant sold the performance in that skin line and probably the best release skin since Bullet Angel Kai’sa.

On the personal note: Battleboss Qiyana share a lot of stuff like Super Galaxy Elise.

    Have a good day.

    • We have to check new skins before they get old. We knew there was a new champion being released we’ll have to check what else is offered. Truth be told, we aren’t surprised anymore that popular champions receive more skins. Riot has been rather clear in their actions about profit and popular champions simply sell better. It’s not pretty but it’s a reality.

We agree that skins could have more depth even if they are guaranteed to sell, assumedly. After all, a good product always sells better than a lacklustre one. Regardless of what Riot does, we’ll be reviewing skins and seeing how things shape up.

      • You’re right, despite you being late to make a page skin review for Yuumi overhere. I rethink the case of Kai’sa being the new Lux, the way to make money. The newest set of Arcade skinline received like ton of negative reception, You and I can just sit down drink some warm milk enjoying bashing the skin and wouldn’t recommend those for buyers.

But hey, this is a free for play game and we don’t have to buy them but at least you can make fun out of it in the skin review. So let’s hope over the PBE they make some changes so the skin look nice enough.

Also in the another stuff, recent VFX update, especially Tryndamere. No much to say about but since W now have effect to show range or usage of it. I would ask the add Demonblade Tryndamere also having Mocking Shout fiery particle as well. [shorten the description particle into: “New particles for his abilities”] Please update it and have a decent day.

        • The way skins are made nowadays it sort of one size fits all and champions being so different means that adaptations can vary greatly in quality if not enough attention is paid. The new Arcade line could very well be a good example.

We don’t think that beign a free to play game is any excuse. A skin is a paid product and as such it should make the buyer satisfied, fulfill its promises and certainly be worth the money paid. Skins on the PBE are almost finalised so that only small changes are made. We hope and would prefer if it were actually a method to improve on skins but it’s mostly bug fixing.

Thanks for the headsup on Tryndamere we took a look and if there’s a difference it’s too small. For the time being we won’t change the review unless we can find a visible difference between the Ws’.

  24. Hi Zero, i just wonder what you think about the new Caitlyn skin (Arcade) and which Caitlyn skin is the best.
    Nice reviews btw!

    • Arcade Caitlyn is a rather nice skin though a bit too blue, it would benefit from more variety. The traps are quite charming with the cherry icon and the ultimate is interesting. Regardless, we find the visual and aural effects weak in that they don’t communicate the power of the shots or abilities. It’s a nice skin but probably too straightforward in its implementation. As we mentioned, the traps seem to be the only characteristic that really catches the 8-bit theme.

We recommend Headhunter Caitlyn. It’s an appealing skin and also rather cheap. In fact, despite the low price it’s a more interesting and well realised skin that others at 1350 RP. Pulsefire Caitlyn, is an interesting option but better reserved for fans of the Sheriff. It’s got some really nice features and while it isn’t perfect it delivers a legendary feel.
